I'm trying to think."

That was the truth.

I was searching through ordinary memories, looking for something that might have seemed unimportant at the time.

A door left open.

A missing key.

A package delivered to the wrong house.

Something small that would explain why a stranger might have entered our home.

I found nothing.

The officer asked whether anyone had contacted me recently in a way that made me uncomfortable.

I said no.

She asked whether I had received any unusual messages or letters.

Again, I said no.

The answer sounded less convincing each time I gave it.

Not because I was hiding anything.

Because the situation itself made every answer feel incomplete.

Finally, I looked at her.

"Can you tell me why you're asking all these questions?"

She paused.

"We're trying to establish what happened and whether anyone may be at risk."

"At risk from whom?"

"We don't know that yet."

I leaned back in my chair.

That was the first answer that felt honest.

They didn't know.

Neither did I.

The officer asked if there was a camera at the front entrance.

There wasn't.

I had considered installing one before, but I had never gotten around to it.

The decision suddenly seemed foolish.

She asked whether any windows had been left open.

I told her the kitchen window was sometimes open during the day, but I couldn't remember whether it had been open that morning.

She made another note.

I stared at the pen in her hand.

It seemed absurd that a few marks on a page could matter so much when I was sitting there with no idea what was happening.

Then Ethan spoke.

"Can I tell her something?"

Both officers turned toward him.

The female officer pulled out the chair opposite us.

"Of course."

Ethan glanced at me before speaking.

"When we came home, I saw the envelope."

She nodded.

"You told your mother that."

"I know. But I saw something else."

My heart began beating faster.

"What else did you see?" I asked.

He rubbed his palms against his jeans.

"I don't know if it matters."

"Tell us anyway," the officer said gently.

Ethan took a breath.

"When we were walking up to the door, I thought someone was inside."

I stared at him.

"What?"

He looked frightened by my reaction.

"I didn't see anyone. I just thought I heard something."

"What kind of sound?"

"Like something moving."

I struggled to keep my voice steady.

"Why didn't you tell me when we were outside?"

"I wasn't sure."

The officer asked him where he had been standing.

He pointed toward the front of the house.

She asked whether he had heard the sound before or after we opened the door.

He thought for a moment.

"Before."

I felt a chill move through me.

I had been so focused on the barber and his warning that I had barely noticed the walk from the car to the house.

I couldn't remember hearing anything unusual.

But Ethan had.

Or thought he had.

The officer didn't treat his answer as proof of anything.

She asked a few more questions, making sure she understood what he remembered and what he was guessing.

I appreciated that.

Ethan was a child.

He could be mistaken.

Fear could make an ordinary noise seem important.

Still, I couldn't dismiss him.

Not after finding the envelope.

Not after the barber had pulled me aside and spoken in a voice that suggested he knew something about my son.

I looked at Ethan.

"Did you see anyone near the house?"

He shook his head.

"Not really."

"What does that mean?"

"I saw a car."

The officers exchanged a glance.

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What car?"

"I don't know. It was on the street."

"What color was it?"

"Maybe gray."

"Did you see who was inside?"

He shook his head again.

"It was too far away."

I wanted more details.

I wanted a license plate, a description, a person, something definite.

But he had seen only a car.

A gray one, perhaps.

That was all.

The officer wrote down what he said and explained that they would consider the information along with everything else.

She didn't promise that it meant anything.

I was grateful for that, too.

I had no use for promises that couldn't be kept.

A few minutes later, the other officer returned to the front room.

He said they had completed their initial check of the entrance and surrounding area.

He didn't report any obvious sign of forced entry.

That should have reassured me.

Instead, it made the envelope more difficult to understand.

If someone had entered the house, how had they done it?

If no one had entered, who had placed the envelope in the dish?

I looked toward the kitchen window.

It was closed.

The lock was in place.

Everything appeared ordinary.

The officer explained that they would continue documenting the situation and that I should contact them if I discovered anything else.

I asked whether I could open the envelope.

He said he wanted to make sure they handled it properly before I did anything with it.

So I waited.

Waiting had never been one of my strengths.

I liked to solve problems as soon as I recognized them.

I made lists.

I asked questions.

I called people.

I did whatever I could to replace uncertainty with something I could understand.

But there was nothing useful for me to do.

The envelope remained on the table in the other room.

My name remained written across the front.

And the officers still had no explanation for how it had arrived.

When they finally finished speaking with us, the female officer gave me instructions for contacting them if anything changed.

She reminded me to tell them if I remembered something else about the day.

I promised I would.

At the door, she looked at Ethan.

"Thank you for telling us what you remembered."

He nodded.

She turned back to me.

"Keep him with you for now, and don't hesitate to call if you become concerned."

Then they left.

I closed the door and checked the lock.

Once.

Then again.

Ethan stood a few feet behind me.

"Are they coming back?"

"I don't know."

He looked toward the table.

"Can we open it now?"

I turned to him.

For the first time since the officers had arrived, I realized that he was asking the same question I had been asking myself.

Whatever was inside that envelope, it had been placed there for a reason.

And someone had chosen my name.

I wasn't ready for what that might mean.

But I was no longer willing to pretend it was nothing.

Click here to continue reading: PART 4: I Had Spent Years Believing I Knew What My Son Remembered, Until One Ordinary Afternoon Forced Me to Question That Belief

The kitchen felt smaller with the officers inside it.
