But that doesn't mean they should."

He never argued.

He simply nodded and went back to whatever he had been doing.

That bothered me more than an argument would have.

Ethan's father had been part of our lives in ways that were difficult to explain to a nine-year-old.

Some memories were happy.

Others were complicated.

I had always tried to protect Ethan from the parts he was too young to understand.

Looking back, I sometimes wonder whether I was protecting him or protecting myself.

There is a difference.

I just wasn't ready to admit it.

The morning everything changed began like any other Saturday.

Ethan came downstairs wearing his favorite blue sweatshirt, the one with a faded dinosaur on the front.

His hair had grown over his ears, and the back curled against his neck.

He stood beside the kitchen table while I poured milk into his cereal.

"Can we go get my hair cut today?"

I looked at him.

"You just had one."

"That was a long time ago."

"It was three weeks ago."

He considered that.

"That's a long time for hair."

I laughed despite myself.

"Fine. Finish breakfast first."

He ate quickly, leaving a little milk at the bottom of his bowl.

Then he carried it to the sink without being reminded.

Small things like that made me proud of him.

He was becoming independent.

He was also becoming harder to read.

I didn't understand that second part yet.

We drove to the barbershop late that morning.

It was a modest place on a familiar street, with two chairs near the front window and a row of old photographs along the wall.

Ethan had been going there long enough that the barber knew how he liked his hair.

The bell above the door rang when we entered.

The barber looked up from the chair he was cleaning.

"There's my young man."

Ethan smiled.

"Hi."

The barber glanced at me, then back at Ethan.

"Same cut today?"

"Yes, please."

I took a seat near the window while Ethan climbed into the chair.

A television played quietly in the corner.

Someone had left a newspaper folded on a small table beside me.

Outside, cars passed without much noise.

Nothing about the place seemed unusual.

I remember that because I would think about it many times afterward.

The ordinary details stayed with me.

The smell of hair products.

The faint buzzing of the clippers.

The little plastic combs arranged in a container beside the mirror.

I watched Ethan in the reflection.

He was usually talkative during haircuts.

He would ask the barber about his weekend or tell him something funny that had happened at school.

That day, he barely spoke.

The barber noticed, too.

"You feeling all right, Ethan?"

"Yes."

"School keeping you busy?"

"A little."

The barber smiled at him in the mirror.

"Well, we'll get you looking sharp again."

Ethan nodded.

I returned my attention to the newspaper, although I wasn't really reading it.

I was thinking about the questions he had been asking at home.

Maybe he had heard something at school.

Maybe another child had mentioned his father.

Children sometimes carried worries they couldn't explain.

I wanted to ask him about it, but I didn't want to turn every quiet moment into an interrogation.

So I waited.

The clippers stopped.

I looked up.

The barber had moved behind Ethan and was trimming the hair around his neck.

He said something I couldn't hear.

Ethan answered softly.

Then the barber went quiet.

At first, I thought he was concentrating.

But when I looked at his face in the mirror, I saw that something had changed.

He was studying Ethan.

Not the way a barber studied a customer's haircut.

He looked as though he had recognized something he hadn't expected to see.

I straightened in my chair.

The barber switched off the clippers.

"Claire?"

I stood.

"Yes?"

He looked toward Ethan, then at me.

"Could I speak to you for a moment when we're finished?"

There was nothing dramatic in his voice.

That almost made it worse.

I glanced at my son.

"What is it?"

"Just something I'd rather discuss privately."

He returned to the haircut before I could ask another question.

I sat down again.

My hands had become cold.

I tried to tell myself that there were ordinary explanations.

Perhaps Ethan had said something about school.

Perhaps the barber had noticed a problem with his scalp.

Perhaps he simply wanted to ask me something about the appointment.

I built one explanation after another.

None of them felt convincing.

When the haircut was finished, the barber brushed the loose hair from Ethan's neck and held up a mirror so he could inspect the back.

"How's that?"

Ethan examined himself.

"Good."

He climbed down from the chair.

I paid at the counter.

The barber accepted the money, but he didn't immediately turn away.

Instead, he waited until Ethan had walked toward the front door.

Then he leaned closer to me.

His voice dropped.

"I think there's something you need to know about your son."

For a moment, I couldn't answer.

I looked past him toward Ethan.

My son was standing by the window, examining something outside.

He seemed completely unaware of the conversation.

"What do you mean?"

The barber hesitated.

"I don't want to say something without being sure."

That sentence frightened me more than a direct accusation would have.

I had spent years worrying about the obvious dangers.

Strangers.

Accidents.

The things mothers were warned about.

I had never prepared myself for the possibility that someone who knew my family might be carrying information I didn't have.

"Is Ethan in trouble?"

"No. Not that I know of."

"Then what is this about?"

He glanced toward the door.

"I'd rather you come back when you can talk without him listening."

I felt a sudden rush of anger.

Not because he had done anything wrong, but because he had placed a question in my mind and refused to answer it.

"You can't tell me something like that and expect me to leave without an explanation."

He lowered his eyes.

"I understand."

But he still didn't explain.

I looked at Ethan again.

He had turned away from the window and was watching us now.

I forced a smile and walked over to him.

"Ready to go?"

He nodded.

We stepped outside into the afternoon light.

The street looked exactly as it had when we arrived.

People walked past the shop.

A car pulled away from the curb.

Somewhere nearby, a door slammed.

Ordinary life continued while I tried to understand what had just happened.

Ethan climbed into the passenger seat.

I fastened my seat belt and started the engine.

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

Then he turned toward me.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Did the barber say something to you?"

I kept my eyes on the road.

"He wanted to ask me about something."

"About me?"

I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.

"Why would you think that?"

Ethan looked down at his hands.

"Because he kept looking at me."

I didn't answer immediately.

He had noticed the same thing I had.

That was when I understood that whatever had happened in that shop, it hadn't escaped my son's attention.

And for the first time in a long while, I realized that Ethan might have been noticing far more than I had given him credit for.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Envelope Beneath My Keys Was Addressed to Me, and My Son Recognized It
