16 – I Could Not Ask My Father to Explain Himself Anymore, So I Had to Learn to Face What He Left Without Pretending I Knew Everything

I drew the box a little closer.

The movement was small, but I noticed it.

Earlier, I had moved the box because I wanted to find an answer.

Now I moved it because I was ready to continue.

I didn't expect that difference to change anything about what I found.

It changed how I felt about looking.

I had spent much of the evening treating every object as if it carried a message I needed to decode.

The shoes had become a question about whether my father had paid attention to me.

The letter had become a question about whether he had finally decided to explain himself.

The box itself had become a question about what kind of relationship we had really shared.

Those were important questions.

But I couldn't force the answers out of the things in front of me.

I had to separate what the objects showed from what I hoped they would prove.

I looked at the shoes.

They were my size.

My father had chosen them and left them for me.

I looked at the envelope.

My name was written in his handwriting.

The letter inside had been intended for me.

Those facts were enough to acknowledge without adding another layer of meaning.

I didn't need to call the shoes a symbol.

I didn't need to call the letter an apology.

I could leave room for meaning without pretending I already knew what it was.

That was a kind of patience I hadn't practiced very often with my father.

When we disagreed, I wanted him to explain his decisions.

When he refused, I became frustrated.

Sometimes I pushed harder.

Sometimes I stopped asking and carried the resentment with me.

Neither response had brought us closer.

I had wanted him to understand that his silence hurt.

I had wanted him to recognize that I wasn't asking questions simply to challenge him.

I wanted to know where I stood with him.

I wanted to feel that my place in his life wasn't something I had to guess at.

Those needs had not been unreasonable.

I still believed that.

But I could now see that my frustration had sometimes made it difficult for me to notice anything beyond the answer I hadn't received.

I had focused on what he failed to say.

I had paid less attention to what he actually did.

That didn't mean his actions were always enough.

It meant I had not always looked at them fairly.

The shoes made that clear in a way I couldn't easily dismiss.

I still didn't know why he had selected them.

But I couldn't pretend he had chosen nothing.

He had chosen something specific.

He had arranged for it to reach me.

And he had included a letter addressed in his own hand.

I could acknowledge those decisions without deciding that they repaired our relationship.

That distinction mattered.

I had sometimes believed that admitting one good thing about my father meant excusing every bad thing.

It didn't.

A relationship could contain care and disappointment at the same time.

A person could make a thoughtful choice and still fail to have a necessary conversation.

I could recognize what my father had done without denying what I had needed from him.

For the first time, I felt that I could hold those truths together without having to choose one.

Marcus sat quietly across the table.

I glanced at him.

He had not tried to influence my conclusions, and I was thankful for that.

I didn't want him to tell me what my father had meant.

I wanted to learn how to distinguish what I knew from what I imagined.

That was work I had to do myself.

I looked at the envelope and made sure it was still safely away from the edge of the table.

Then I returned my attention to the box.

I didn't hurry.

I didn't stop to invent a history for every detail.

I didn't demand that the remaining contents settle my feelings.

I was learning to proceed without a promise that everything would make sense.

That was not the ending I would have chosen when Marcus first arrived.

I had wanted certainty.

I had wanted a clear explanation that would let me decide whether my father had understood the pain between us.

I had wanted to read his words and finally know what he had been thinking.

Instead, I had been given a beginning.

A box.

A pair of shoes.

A letter.

And the knowledge that my father had made arrangements for me to receive them.

I could work with that.

I could continue looking.

I could take my time reading what he had written.

I could keep the shoes and the letter safe while I decided what place they would have in my life.

I didn't have to force a conclusion before I was ready.

The thought brought me a quiet sense of relief.

Not because the questions had disappeared.

They hadn't.

I still wished I could ask my father why he had waited.

I still wished I could hear his answers in his own voice.

I still wished some of our conversations had gone differently.

Those wishes were not going to vanish simply because I had learned to look at the box more carefully.

But I no longer needed to treat them as proof that nothing could change.

I could understand more about myself even if I never understood every part of him.

I could acknowledge the hurt without allowing it to define every memory.

I could accept a gesture without turning it into a promise.

And I could admit that the truth might be more complicated than the story I had told myself for years.

I looked at Marcus.

"Thanks for bringing it."

He nodded.

"You're welcome."

There was nothing more to add.

I didn't ask him to explain my father.

I didn't ask him to reassure me that the box meant something good.

I simply thanked him for carrying out what he had been asked to do.

Then I turned back to the table.

The shoes and the envelope remained beside the open box.

I had no final judgment about my father.

I still carried the memories that hurt.

I still wanted answers I might never receive.

But I no longer believed I had to settle every question before I could take another step.

I leaned forward and continued examining what my father had left, prepared to accept whatever I could honestly learn.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I Kept Looking at the Box
