I said.

Marcus gave a small nod.

"Your dad wanted you to have it."

The words were familiar by then.

This time, I heard them without immediately searching for something hidden behind them.

My father had wanted me to receive the box.

I could accept that much.

I didn't have to decide whether it was an apology.

I didn't have to call it an act of love.

I could leave its meaning open until I had more information.

That felt like progress, even if it wasn't the kind I had expected.

I looked down at the shoes.

I imagined putting them on.

They would probably fit.

The size was right, and they looked unworn.

But I didn't know whether I wanted to use them or keep them as they were.

That decision could wait.

For now, I was content to let them sit on the table.

I picked up the box and turned it slightly so I could see inside more clearly.

The remaining packing paper had settled against one side.

I moved it aside with two fingers.

I was careful not to rush.

My father had taken care in preparing the box, and I wanted to give the contents the same attention.

That didn't mean every item would be important.

Some things might be ordinary possessions.

Some might carry a meaning I could understand immediately.

Others might leave me with questions.

I had to be willing to accept all three possibilities.

I rested my hands on the edge of the box and looked at what remained.

I thought about the younger version of myself who had spent so much time waiting for my father to say something that would make everything clear.

I wished I could tell him that clarity wasn't always going to arrive in the form he expected.

Sometimes it came in small pieces.

Sometimes it arrived late.

Sometimes it left you with a better question instead of an answer.

And sometimes you had to learn to live with what you couldn't know.

I wasn't sure that younger version of me would have listened.

I probably wouldn't have.

I had wanted certainty.

I had wanted my father to acknowledge the hurt between us in a way I could recognize without having to interpret it.

I had wanted him to speak plainly.

Perhaps I still wanted those things.

There was no point pretending otherwise.

But I could no longer ask the box to give me a conversation that had never happened.

I could only look at what was there.

Marcus shifted in his chair.

"You doing all right?"

I considered giving him the easy answer.

Instead, I told him the truth.

"I'm not sure yet."

He nodded.

"Fair enough."

I appreciated that he didn't try to improve my answer.

I wasn't all right in the sense that everything had been resolved.

But I was managing.

I had stopped trying to force the evening into a conclusion it wasn't ready to provide.

I looked at the letter one last time.

Then I looked at the shoes.

The ordinary objects had become reminders of something I needed to learn about myself.

I had been so certain that I understood my father that I had stopped looking closely at him.

I had remembered the silences and treated them as the whole story.

Now I was being asked to consider the possibility that there had been more.

That possibility did not excuse him.

It did not make my disappointment disappear.

It simply meant that I had more to learn.

I could live with that.

At least for the moment.

I pulled the box into a comfortable position and settled into my chair.

Marcus stayed across from me, quiet and patient.

I was ready to continue examining what my father had left.

I no longer expected the next thing to provide a perfect explanation.

I only wanted to see it clearly.

That was a smaller goal than the one I had brought to the table.

It was also a more honest one.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Stopped Trying to Guess What My Father Meant and Started Paying Attention to What He Had Actually Chosen to Leave Behind

I drew the box toward me once more.
