6 – Marcus Would Not Explain What My Father Had Intended, and I Finally Had to Accept That Some Answers Would Not Come From Him

For a while, neither of us spoke.

I kept my attention on the box.

Marcus sat opposite me, his hands resting near the edge of the table.

The kitchen light hummed faintly overhead.

I had never paid much attention to that sound before.

That evening, it seemed impossible to ignore.

I looked at Marcus again.

There were still questions I wanted to ask him.

I wanted to know how long he had been aware of the box.

I wanted to know whether my father had ever mentioned leaving something for me.

I wanted to know why the delivery had happened when it did.

But I had already asked several questions, and his answers had made one thing clear.

He wasn't going to invent an explanation simply to make the evening easier.

I respected that.

I also found it frustrating.

Those feelings didn't cancel each other out.

"Did Dad tell you when I should open it?" I asked.

Marcus shook his head.

"He wanted you to receive it."

I looked at the envelope.

"That's all?"

"That's all I can tell you."

I nodded slowly.

I didn't like the answer, but I believed him.

There was a difference between someone withholding information and someone not having it.

For years, I had sometimes treated those two things as the same.

When my father refused to answer a question, I assumed he had decided I wasn't entitled to the truth.

Sometimes that might have been exactly what he thought.

Other times, I had no idea.

I had never given myself much room to consider the difference.

I looked down at my hands.

The skin around my fingernails was rough, and there was a small mark on one thumb from an ordinary task I couldn't even remember.

I focused on that mark for a moment.

It was easier than looking at Marcus and admitting how much I still wanted him to tell me something comforting.

I wanted him to say that my father had cared.

I wanted him to tell me that the box had been prepared with love.

I wanted a clear answer that would allow me to put the anger away.

But Marcus couldn't give me that.

Even if he believed it himself, he couldn't know everything my father had felt.

And I couldn't ask him to make my father's intentions more certain than they were.

I took a breath.

"All right."

Marcus nodded.

It wasn't a dramatic moment.

Nobody apologized.

Nobody suddenly understood everything.

We simply reached the limit of what he could tell me.

For some reason, that felt important.

I had spent too much time trying to force answers from people who didn't have them.

I had spent just as much time imagining answers when the real ones were unavailable.

Neither habit had helped me.

I picked up the letter again.

The envelope was slightly bent at one corner from being handled, so I smoothed it against the table.

My father's handwriting was still visible through the thin paper where the light caught it.

I wondered how many times he had written my name before he settled on this envelope.

I wondered whether he had thought about what I might feel when I saw it.

Those were questions I couldn't answer.

I set the envelope down.

Then I looked at Marcus.

"I don't know what I'm supposed to do with all this."

He glanced at the shoes.

"You don't have to decide tonight."

I almost argued.

I had spent so much time waiting for my father that the idea of waiting again felt unbearable.

But Marcus wasn't asking me to wait for him.

He was reminding me that I didn't need to make a decision about everything at once.

There was a difference.

I looked around the kitchen.

The room was ordinary.

A cup sat near the sink.

A dish towel hung over the oven handle.

The clock continued moving as if nothing unusual had happened.

My life had not stopped because my father had left me a box.

I still had the same responsibilities and the same unanswered questions.

But I also had something I hadn't had before.

A physical reminder that my father's story might contain details I had never known.

I didn't need to make those details into a grand revelation.

I only needed to be willing to look at them.

I turned back to the box.

The shoes were still beside the letter.

I had begun to notice how often my eyes returned to them.

They were simple enough to understand on their own.

A pair of work shoes.

My size.

No hidden meaning was required to recognize that someone had selected them for me.

What remained uncertain was why.

I could live with that question for now.

I lifted the shoes and placed them closer to the box.

Then I moved the envelope to a safer spot, away from the edge of the table.

I wanted to keep both objects in sight.

I didn't want the letter buried under something else.

I didn't want the shoes pushed aside and forgotten.

It seemed like a small way of respecting what my father had chosen to leave.

I wasn't ready to call it forgiveness.

That word would have asked too much of me.

I wasn't ready to say that I understood him either.

Understanding takes more than a letter and a pair of shoes.

It takes time.

It takes a willingness to see things clearly, even when the truth is less comforting than the explanation you had built for yourself.

I had not always been willing to do that.

I had often preferred the certainty of being hurt to the discomfort of not knowing why someone had acted as they did.

At least anger gave me something solid to hold.

Uncertainty did not.

But I was beginning to see that uncertainty might be the most honest place to start.

Marcus leaned forward slightly.

"You look like you're thinking too hard."

I let out a short breath that almost became a laugh.

"I probably am."

He gave a small nod.

"Wouldn't be the first time."

That was the closest either of us had come to joking since he arrived.

I smiled briefly.

It felt strange to do so.

The evening had not become easier, exactly, but the pressure in my chest loosened a little.

I didn't need to turn the box into a courtroom.

My father wasn't there to defend himself, and I wasn't required to deliver a final judgment.

I could simply examine what he had left.

I could acknowledge the things that hurt.

I could also acknowledge the things that suggested I might not have known him as completely as I thought.

That was enough for one evening.

I returned my attention to the box and began preparing to continue.

Marcus stayed where he was.

For once, I didn't feel the need to make him explain the silence.

I could let it exist without assuming it meant something cruel.

I wished I had understood that distinction when my father was alive.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Longer I Sat With the Letter, the More I
