he said.

I lowered my eyes.

It wasn't the answer I wanted.

But it was a fair one.

I had asked a question about my father, and Marcus was refusing to turn his own impressions into facts.

I couldn't blame him for that.

I ran a finger along the edge of the cardboard.

The box was sturdy enough, but one corner had softened from being handled.

I wondered whether my father had noticed that when he packed it.

Probably not.

Then again, I had spent years assuming he didn't notice things that mattered to me.

The shoes had already made that assumption less certain.

I took my hands away from the box and rested them on the table.

I needed to stop treating every small detail as a verdict.

My father had not been perfect.

I hadn't been perfect either.

Whatever the box contained, it couldn't change the past.

It could only give me more information about it.

I thought about the letter.

I had read it, but I wasn't ready to pretend that reading it meant I understood everything it was trying to tell me.

Some words were easier to receive than others.

Some were harder because they came too late.

I had to accept that both things could be true.

I reached for the envelope and checked that the letter was still safely inside.

Then I placed it beside the shoes again.

I wanted the two objects together.

I couldn't have explained why.

Perhaps because they were the first things I had found.

Perhaps because they were the only things I could examine without feeling overwhelmed by possibilities.

I looked at them for another moment.

Then I turned back to the box.

Marcus shifted in his chair.

"You want me to stay?"

The question caught me off guard.

I had assumed he intended to remain until I finished.

Now I realized that I had never asked him to.

I considered telling him he could leave.

Part of me wanted privacy.

Another part didn't want to sit alone with the box and everything it had begun to bring back.

I was tired of pretending that needing someone nearby was a weakness.

"Stay a little longer," I said.

Marcus nodded.

He didn't make a big deal of it.

That helped.

I moved the box toward the center of the table and began examining the contents again.

I would take things one at a time.

I would resist the urge to turn every object into a message before I knew what I was looking at.

And if the box left me with more questions than answers, I would have to live with that for the moment.

It was more patience than I had shown my father during some of our conversations.

Looking back, I wish I had learned it earlier.

But there was no use pretending I could go back and change how we had treated each other.

All I could do was sit at the kitchen table, with the shoes and the letter beside me, and continue.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Marcus Would Not Explain What My Father Had Intended, and I Finally Had to Accept That Some Answers Would Not Come From Him

I pulled the box closer.
