4 – The Box Had Been Prepared With More Care Than I Expected, and Every Small Detail Made Me Question My Memories

I thought opening the box would be the difficult part.

I was wrong.

The difficult part was deciding what to do with everything I found inside it.

I had spent years telling myself that my father was a man who kept things simple.

He worked.

He handled what needed to be handled.

He didn't explain himself unless he thought an explanation was necessary.

That was how I remembered him.

But the box on my kitchen table didn't fit neatly into that picture.

Someone had taken time to prepare it.

The contents had been arranged with care, and the envelope had been marked specifically for me.

Even the shoes seemed to have been chosen for a reason.

I sat quietly, looking at everything I had taken out so far.

Marcus remained across from me.

He wasn't rushing me, and he wasn't asking what I had learned from the letter.

I was grateful for that.

I needed time to think without feeling that I had to produce an answer for someone else.

I picked up the shoes once more.

They were still as ordinary as they had looked when I first saw them.

Black leather.

Thick soles.

A practical shape.

The kind of footwear someone might buy for a person who spent his days working rather than standing around talking about what needed to be done.

I checked the size again.

Eleven.

Mine.

I knew it wasn't a complicated detail.

A person could remember another person's shoe size without thinking much about it.

But my father had not simply remembered mine.

He had bought the shoes and placed them in a box intended for me.

That meant he had made a decision.

I couldn't tell how long ago he had made it, or what he had been thinking at the time.

Still, I couldn't ignore it.

I placed the shoes together on the table.

Then I looked at the envelope.

My name seemed more personal now that I had read the letter.

I had always thought of my father's handwriting as something practical, something that appeared on notes and lists.

Seeing it on a letter he had left for me made it harder to keep that distance.

I could almost imagine him sitting somewhere with the page in front of him, trying to decide what to write.

I wondered whether he had struggled with the words.

Whether he had written several versions before choosing the one I received.

Whether he had ever considered giving the letter to me himself.

Those thoughts were only guesses.

I knew that.

But they came anyway.

I had spent years trying to understand a man who rarely gave me enough information to do it.

It was tempting to fill the empty spaces with whatever explanation hurt the least.

I didn't want to make that mistake again.

I picked up the envelope and slipped the letter inside.

Then I set it aside carefully.

The box still held things I hadn't examined.

I could see the edges of other items beneath the remaining packing material, but I didn't pull them out immediately.

I wanted to be certain I wasn't overlooking something simply because I had become distracted by the first two objects.

Marcus watched me.

"You can take your time," he said.

I nodded.

"I intend to."

I heard the firmness in my own voice.

It surprised me.

For once, I wasn't asking someone else to tell me what my father meant.

I was going to look at what he had left and decide what I could reasonably understand from it.

That didn't mean I would get every answer right.

It meant I would stop treating my assumptions as facts.

I moved the envelope farther from the edge of the table.

Then I cleared a little space beside the shoes.

The kitchen looked different with the box open.

It was the same room where I ate, worked, and dealt with the ordinary problems of my life.

The same table.

The same chairs.

The same window.

Yet the things sitting between Marcus and me had changed the atmosphere.

I felt as if I had been handed a conversation that should have happened years earlier.

Only now, one of the people who belonged in it was gone.

I didn't know whether that made the letter more valuable or more painful.

Probably both.

I looked at Marcus.

"Did my father tell you why he wanted me to have these things?"

He considered the question before answering.

"He wanted you to receive them."

I waited for him to continue.

He didn't.

I let out a slow breath.

"I know that part."

"I don't have anything else to add."

His answer wasn't cold.

It sounded honest.

I had to accept that he might not know any more than he had told me.

For years, I had been frustrated by people who seemed to know something about my father that they wouldn't share with me.

Sometimes I had assumed they were protecting him.

Sometimes I thought they were protecting themselves.

Now I had no reason to accuse Marcus of either.

He had brought the box.

He had stayed while I opened it.

He had answered the questions he could answer.

The rest belonged to me.

I turned back to the table.

The shoes had begun to seem less like an object and more like a question.

Why had my father chosen them?

What had he expected me to do with them?

Had he simply wanted me to have something useful, or was there a reason I had yet to understand?

I couldn't answer any of those questions.

But I could keep them in mind.

I could resist the urge to dismiss the shoes as meaningless just because I didn't understand them.

That was something I had learned too late about my father.

I had often decided that his actions meant nothing because he refused to explain them.

Maybe some of them had meant more than I realized.

Maybe others meant exactly what they appeared to mean.

I would have to examine each one on its own.

The letter was the first piece of that work.

The shoes were the second.

I looked at both, trying to see them without adding a story of my own.

My father had left me a pair of work shoes in my size.

He had also left me a letter addressed in his handwriting.

Those were the facts.

Everything else was still uncertain.

For the first time that evening, I felt able to sit with that uncertainty without immediately trying to escape it.

I didn't need to decide what kind of man my father had been before I finished looking through the box.

I didn't need to forgive him.

I didn't need to condemn him.

I only needed to keep going.

I drew the box closer to me.

The cardboard scraped softly against the table.

Marcus leaned back in his chair, giving me room.

I glanced at him once, then returned my attention to the things my father had left.

The shoes sat beside the envelope.

One ordinary object.

One personal letter.

Both had been put there deliberately, and neither had given me the complete explanation I wanted.

But they had changed something.

I no longer believed I could understand my father simply by remembering the things he had said to me.

I would have to consider what he had done, too.

That was where I stood as I prepared to continue through the box.

I had no clear picture of what I would find.

I had no promise that the remaining items would make sense.

And I had no way to ask the man who had packed them what he had intended.

All I had was the box, the letter, the shoes, and the knowledge that my father had made sure they reached me.

For now, that was enough to keep me looking.

<a
