Is this a bad time?"

"No. I'm putting things away, but I can talk."

"I wanted to check how you're doing."

"I'm all right."

She paused.

"I've been thinking about our conversation."

"So have I."

"I know I handled things badly."

I set a can of soup in the cupboard.

"Thank you for saying that."

"I thought I was helping by getting things ready. I didn't think about how it would look to you."

"It was more than how it looked."

"I know."

I waited.

"I should have talked to you first," she continued. "Even if I thought you might be upset."

"Yes."

"I didn't want to make you feel as if you couldn't manage your own life."

I leaned against the counter.

"I appreciate that. But when you packed my belongings, that was exactly how I felt."

"I understand."

I wanted to believe she did.

I also knew that understanding could take time.

I did not need to force the conversation into a neat ending.

"Julian told me he was worried about my safety," I said.

"He is."

"Is that what you were worried about too?"

"Partly. I worry about you being alone if something happens. And I worry about the house becoming more work than you can manage."

"Those are reasonable things to discuss."

"I know."

"But I need you to tell me what you are worried about, not decide what I should do."

"You're right."

Her answer came without an argument.

I found myself relaxing a little.

I had expected to spend the call defending my right to remain in the house.

Instead, we were finally talking about the concerns themselves.

"I don't want you to think I would never accept help," I said. "I know I cannot do everything forever."

"I don't think that."

"I just want to be part of the decision."

"You should be."

I looked at the grocery bags on the counter.

There were apples, bread, milk, and a packet of tea.

Ordinary things I had bought for myself because I knew what I needed.

I had not stopped making those decisions simply because I was older.

I did not intend to stop making the larger ones without a reason.

"Would you be willing to talk about some practical arrangements?" I asked.

"Of course."

"I am thinking about things that would help me stay here comfortably. We could talk about regular check-ins, help with the garden, and what to do if I need assistance."

"That sounds sensible."

"And I want to understand what Magnolia Gardens offers, without treating a visit or a conversation as a decision to move."

"That's fair."

"If I decide to look at it, I will. If I decide I don't want to, I need that answer to be respected too."

"Of course."

The conversation was not warm in the way a conversation between close friends might be.

There was still tension between us.

But there was also less defensiveness.

For the first time, we were discussing my future without pretending that a decision had already been made.

Before we hung up, Candice said something I had not expected.

"I really am sorry about the photograph."

I glanced toward the bedroom.

"I know it was important to you," she continued. "I should never have taken it from your nightstand without asking."

"Thank you."

"I thought you would want it with you if you moved."

"I understand that now."

I paused.

"But that is why you needed to talk to me first."

"Yes," she said. "I understand."

After the call, I finished putting away the groceries.

I washed my hands and went into the living room.

Arthur's chair stood beside the window, and his photograph rested on the table nearby.

I picked it up and sat down.

I remembered the way he used to talk about our house.

He never described it as an investment or a collection of rooms.

He called it the place where we lived.

The distinction had seemed obvious at the time.

Now I understood how much comfort there was in it.

A house could become too large.

Repairs could become expensive.

Stairs could become difficult.

None of those facts changed the meaning a home held for the person living in it.

I placed the photograph back on the table.

Then I took a notebook from the desk and began writing down what I wanted to discuss with Julian and Candice together.

I did not want another conversation built around accusations.

I wanted to talk about what help might look like.

I wanted to be honest about the things that were becoming more difficult.

I wanted them to be honest about their concerns.

And I wanted us to agree that no one would make plans for me without first speaking to me.

That last point mattered most.

I wrote it plainly.

*No decisions about my living arrangements without my participation.**

I looked at the sentence.

It sounded formal, almost like something that belonged in a contract.

But it was only a statement of respect.

I had no wish to control Julian's life.

I did not want to tell Candice how to manage her home.

I was asking for the same courtesy I had tried to give them.

I put the notebook away and went outside to look at the garden.

The air was cool.

A few leaves had gathered near the steps, and the hedge needed trimming.

I could do some of the work myself.

For the rest, I could ask for help.

I stood on the path and looked at the house.

I could see the kitchen window, the living room curtains, and the bedroom window where Arthur's photograph had been visible from the driveway when the light was right.

This was not a place I was clinging to out of fear.

It was a place I still wanted to live.

That was reason enough to explore what would make it possible.

I went back inside and closed the door.

The decision was not whether I would accept help.

The decision was how to accept it without handing over my right to choose.

I had spent several days defending myself against the fear that my family wanted to remove me from my home.

Now I could see that their concern and their approach were two different things.

I could respect the concern while rejecting the approach.

I could listen to their worries without agreeing that they should decide for me.

And I could love them without pretending they had done nothing wrong.

That afternoon, I called Julian and asked whether he and Candice could come over for a conversation later in the week.

I told him I wanted us to talk calmly about safety, help around the house, and what each of us expected going forward.

He agreed.

I did not ask him to promise that everything would be different.

I wanted to see whether we could make it different through what we did next.

After the call, I returned to my ordinary afternoon.

I watered the plants.

I made a list for the grocery store.

I put fresh sheets on the bed.

And when I passed the closet, I saw the blue Samsonite standing where it belonged.

I closed the door without looking at it again.

I had more important things to think about now.

*END PART 18**

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: When Julian and Candice Came to My House to Talk, I Finally Told Them What Staying in My Home Meant to Me

The next morning, I woke with a clearer idea of what I wanted to do.
