15 – Hearing Julian Admit What He Knew Did Not Settle the Matter, but It Helped Me Separate His Choices From the Ones Candice Had Made

After the call, I did not feel relieved in the way I had expected.

I had wanted answers.

I had received some.

Yet the house seemed unusually quiet, and I found myself listening to the ordinary sounds I usually ignored.

The refrigerator hummed.

The clock ticked.

A branch scraped lightly against the outside wall when the wind shifted.

I sat with my hands folded on the table.

Julian had confirmed that Magnolia Gardens had been discussed.

He had admitted that he and Candice had talked about my living arrangements without including me.

He had also said he did not know she had packed the suitcases.

I had to keep those facts separate.

If I treated them as one thing, I might accuse him of something he had not done.

If I treated his lack of direct involvement in the packing as proof that he had done nothing wrong, I would be ignoring what he had admitted.

Neither response would help me understand the situation.

I wanted to be fair.

I also wanted to be fair to myself.

For years, I had been so concerned with being fair to Julian that I often made excuses before he had even offered an explanation.

I would tell myself he was busy.

I would tell myself he had a difficult marriage to manage.

I would tell myself that young couples needed privacy and that I should not expect him to explain every choice.

All of those things could be true.

None of them meant I had to accept being left out of a decision about my own home.

I rose from the table and walked into the living room.

Arthur's photograph was still missing from the place where it belonged.

I had expected that detail to become less painful once I knew how the box had been labeled.

It did not.

I went to the bedroom and opened the closet.

The shelf where the blue suitcase had been stored looked strangely empty.

The brown suitcase had been beside it.

I remembered putting them away after different trips, always checking that the zippers were closed and the handles were tucked in.

I had never thought much about them.

They were practical things.

They carried clothes from one place to another.

That morning, seeing them in Candice's car had made me feel as though someone had started moving me before I had even stood up from my own bed.

I closed the closet.

Then I opened it again.

I was not searching for anything.

I think I simply needed to look at the empty shelf and acknowledge what had happened.

Someone had taken my belongings out of my closet.

I had seen them with my own eyes.

I did not need to soften that fact by calling it a misunderstanding.

I went back to the living room and sat beside the window.

When Arthur was alive, we had talked about growing older.

Not in any grand way.

We discussed it when one of us struggled to get up from the sofa, when a neighbor moved closer to her daughter, or when a friend decided to sell a house that had become too much work.

We had always understood that circumstances could change.

We had also understood that a decision about our home belonged to us.

Arthur had never promised that I would never need help.

He had promised to treat me as a partner in my own life.

That was what I missed most about him now.

Not that he would have argued with Candice.

Not that he would have known exactly what to say.

I missed having someone beside me who did not require me to explain why I deserved a say.

After a while, I returned to the kitchen and made another cup of tea.

I carried it to the living room and sat with it between my hands.

The conversation with Julian replayed in pieces.

His admission that the discussions had happened before Sunday.

His explanation of Magnolia Gardens.

His quick answer that he had not known about the packed suitcases.

His silence when I asked who decided it was time to discuss my future.

I could not know what his silence meant.

Perhaps he felt ashamed.

Perhaps he was frustrated.

Perhaps he thought I was being unreasonable and did not want to say so.

I would not decide for him.

He would have to tell me.

That realization was new enough to feel uncomfortable.

I had spent years trying to understand people by anticipating their reactions.

I thought if I could predict their feelings, I could prevent arguments.

But predicting someone else's feelings was not the same as understanding them.

It often meant I was having both sides of a conversation alone.

I had done that with Julian.

I had done it with Candice.

I had even done it with myself, deciding that I was hurt but not hurt enough to mention it, or angry but not angry enough to make anyone uncomfortable.

I had called it being easy to live with.

I was beginning to wonder whether I had simply made myself easy to disregard.

The thought was painful.

I did not want to turn one difficult morning into a judgment on every year of my life.

Julian had been a loving son in many ways.

He had called after Arthur died.

He had helped with repairs.

He had sat at this very table and listened when I told him stories about his father that he had forgotten.

There was good in our relationship.

I did not need to erase it to recognize that something was wrong now.

I set the tea down.

My phone lay beside the lamp.

I picked it up and opened the message screen, then put it down again.

I considered writing to Julian.

I wanted to tell him that I was glad we had talked, that I loved him, and that I did not want this to become a fight.

But I knew how easily such a message could turn into an apology for having asked the questions in the first place.

I had done that before.

I would raise a concern, hear someone become uncomfortable, and then rush to reassure them that I was not blaming them.

The concern would disappear beneath my reassurance.

This time, I did not send anything.

I could love my son without immediately making him comfortable.

I could give him time to think.

I could also give myself time to decide what I wanted to say next.

The next morning, I woke earlier than usual.

For a few seconds, I forgot about the previous day.

Then I saw the empty place on the nightstand.

The memory returned without warning.

I sat up and reached for my glasses.

I did not rush out of bed.

I put my feet on the floor, pulled on my robe, and made the bed before leaving the room.

Those small actions mattered to me.

I wanted to begin the day as myself, not as a woman waiting for someone else to decide what would happen to her.

In the kitchen, I made coffee and toasted a slice of bread.

I ate at the table while the morning light moved across the window.

Then I took out the paper with my questions.

I had crossed off the ones Julian had answered, but I had not thrown the paper away.

The remaining questions were not accusations.

They were things I still needed to understand.

Why had Candice decided to pack my belongings?

What did she believe was supposed to happen that Sunday?

Why had she chosen to put Arthur's photograph in the box?

And why had no one spoken to me before making preparations?

I wrote one more question.

What did Candice think I had agreed to?

I placed the paper in the folder with the household documents.

Not because it was a legal matter.

Because it was important, and I did not want it lost among the small distractions of the day.

Then I called Martha.

I had not spoken to her since the previous week, and I did not want to make our conversation about my family before I had even said hello.

We talked about the weather.

She told me that her neighbor had planted flowers too early and that the sudden cold had damaged half of them.

I told her I had been thinking about making soup.

For a while, it felt good to talk about something ordinary.

Eventually, she asked whether I was all right.

I paused.

Martha had known me for too many years to be fooled by a cheerful voice.

"I'm dealing with something at home," I said.

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"I might, but I'm not ready to tell the whole story yet."

"That's fine."

I appreciated that she did not push.

"I just wanted to hear a familiar voice," I admitted.

"I'm glad you called."

We talked for a few more minutes.

When we hung up, I felt less alone.

I did not tell her about Magnolia Gardens.

I did not tell her about the box.

Not because I was ashamed, but because I wanted to understand the situation before turning it into a story for someone else.

I wanted the next conversation to be with Candice.

I needed to hear what she believed she was doing.

I could not assume Julian's explanation represented her thinking.

He had said he did not know about the packed suitcases.

I would take him at his word unless I learned otherwise.

But Candice had been the person standing beside the car.

She had been the person who told me not to go through her belongings when the things in the box were mine.

She had been the person who had looked at me and said I was making things harder than they needed to be.

I wanted to know what she thought would have happened if I had not changed the locks.

Would she have carried the suitcases inside?

Would she have asked me to leave?

Would she have explained Magnolia Gardens?

I did not know.

I was no longer willing to answer those questions on her behalf.

I spent the rest of the morning doing what I had planned to do before the previous day turned everything upside down.

I changed the sheets.

I watered the plants.

I sorted the mail and paid a bill that was due at the end of the week.

I opened the bedroom window for a few minutes and let the cool air move through the room.

I did not feel brave every minute.

Sometimes I felt foolish for being so troubled by a few suitcases.

Then I remembered the photograph.

I remembered the label.

I remembered Julian's admission that discussions about my living arrangements had taken place without me.

Those were not imaginary problems.

I did not need to exaggerate them.

I did not need to minimize them either.

By noon, I had decided what I would do.

I would speak to Candice when we could have a calm conversation.

I would not demand an answer while either of us was shouting.

I would not accuse her of a plan I could not prove.

But I would ask her to explain what she had packed, why she had packed it, and what she expected to happen next.

If she believed she had been helping, she could explain how she had reached that conclusion.

If she believed I needed support, she could tell me why.

And if she thought I should move, she could say so directly.

I would listen.

Then I would make my own decision.

That was all I wanted.

Not to win an argument.

Not to punish my son.

Not to make Candice feel as frightened or excluded as I had felt.

I wanted the right to hear what was being discussed about my life before anyone began arranging it for me.

I folded the paper and placed it back in the folder.

For the first time since Sunday morning, I no longer felt that I had to solve everything immediately.

I had time to ask questions.

I had time to listen.

And I had time to say no.

*END PART 15**

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Decided to Speak to Candice Directly,
