I want you to understand that those things were mine, and I had not asked her to gather them."

"I know, Mom."

"Do you?"

He did not answer immediately.

I had learned that the question mattered more than I had once believed.

It was easy for someone to say they understood.

It was harder for them to explain what they understood and why.

"Mom, I'm trying to talk to you about this without making it worse."

"I am trying to do the same thing."

"I don't want you thinking that everyone is against you."

"I haven't said that everyone is against me."

"You've been very upset about Candice lately."

I leaned against the counter.

I could feel the old conversation taking shape.

My feelings were becoming the subject.

The packed belongings were moving to the edges.

If I followed that path, we could spend an hour discussing whether I had been too sensitive, whether I had misunderstood Candice, and whether I should have spoken more calmly.

At the end of it, I might still not know why my things had been packed.

"Julian, I need to ask you about the discussions you mentioned this morning."

He sighed.

"I knew we'd get back to that."

"Because I still don't know what you meant."

"I told you there had been conversations."

"Yes. Conversations about what?"

He was silent.

I waited without filling the space.

"About what would happen next," he finally said.

"Next after what?"

"Mom, you know things have been changing."

I looked around my kitchen.

The refrigerator hummed.

The clock continued ticking.

Nothing in the room helped me understand what he meant.

"I know Arthur died eleven years ago," I said. "I know I have gotten older. I know that sometimes I need help with things. Which change are you talking about?"

"That's not what I meant."

"Then please tell me what you did mean."

He drew another breath.

"Candice and I have talked about your living arrangements."

The words landed quietly.

That almost made them worse.

I had imagined a dozen explanations while waiting for his call.

I had wondered whether Candice had simply decided to be helpful in a way that was thoughtless.

I had wondered whether Julian had agreed to something without thinking it through.

Now I knew that the subject had been discussed.

My living arrangements.

As if I were a problem that needed a suitable place.

"When did you talk about that?" I asked.

"Not all at once."

"How long have these conversations been happening?"

"I don't know exactly."

"Was it recently?"

"Some of it was."

"And some of it wasn't?"

"Mom, I can't give you a date for every conversation."

"I am not asking you to remember every sentence. I am asking whether this began before today."

"Yes."

I held the edge of the counter.

The answer was simple.

It did not explain everything, but it removed one of the excuses I had been trying to make for him.

This had not begun when Candice arrived at my house that morning.

It had been discussed before.

"Did you know she had packed my suitcases?"

"No."

"Did you know she had packed the box?"

"I knew she was collecting some information and looking at possibilities."

"That is not the same thing."

"No, it's not."

"Did you know she was putting my belongings in her car?"

"No."

His answer came more quickly that time.

I believed he might be telling the truth about that specific detail.

But the truth about one detail did not erase the others.

"You said you knew there had been discussions," I reminded him. "What possibilities were you looking at?"

He was quiet again.

"Magnolia Gardens came up."

I looked down at the handwritten questions beside the telephone.

The third one had seemed almost too simple to write.

What was Magnolia Gardens?

Now I had an answer, but it was not enough.

"What is it?" I asked.

"It's a place that offers different kinds of support for older people."

"Like a nursing home?"

"Not exactly."

"Then what?"

"They have different arrangements. Some people live independently, and there are services available if they need them."

I sat down at the kitchen table.

I had heard of places like that.

There were communities where older people lived in apartments, had meals available, and could ask for help when they needed it.

Some people liked them.

Some needed them.

There was nothing shameful about either.

But choosing such a place was not the same as being assigned one.

"Did you and Candice think I should move there?" I asked.

"I think we were trying to understand what options existed."

"That doesn't answer my question."

"No," he admitted. "It doesn't."

I looked at the paper again.

I had written down three questions.

Now the answers were becoming more complicated, but at least I was hearing them directly.

"Did you ask me whether I wanted to consider Magnolia Gardens?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"We hadn't reached a point where we were ready to talk about it."

"Who decides when we reach that point?"

"Mom, that's not fair."

"I am asking a fair question."

"You make it sound as if we were plotting something behind your back."

"I didn't say you were plotting. I said you discussed my living arrangements without talking to me."

"We were trying to plan."

"Planning for whom?"

He went quiet.

I wished I could see his face.

I wanted to know whether he was angry, embarrassed, or simply struggling to find words.

But I did not want to confuse his expression with his answer.

"Julian, I am your mother. I know you care about me."

"I do."

"I have never doubted that you love me."

"Then why are we talking like this?"

"Because loving me does not mean you can decide where I should live without asking me."

He said nothing.

I continued before I could lose my nerve.

"If I need help, we can discuss help. If you think there are things I should consider, you can tell me. If I want to look at Magnolia Gardens, I can look at it."

"Of course."

"But none of that gives you or Candice the right to pack my belongings and put them in a car."

"I agree that shouldn't have happened."

I stopped.

It was the first thing he had said that did not come wrapped in a defense.

"Then why did it happen?"

"I don't know exactly what she was thinking."

"Have you asked her?"

"Not yet."

"Then please do."

"I will."

I wanted to believe him.

I also knew that a promise was not the same as an explanation.

"One more thing," I said.

"All right."

"When you and Candice discussed Magnolia Gardens, did either of you believe I had agreed to move?"

"No."

The answer was immediate.

I felt something inside me loosen, though it did not disappear.

"Did either of you think I had asked for help finding somewhere else to live?"

"No."

"Then I need you to understand something. I have not agreed to leave this house."

"I understand."

"I am not saying I will never consider a change. I am saying it has to be my decision."

"All right."

"And if you have concerns about me, you need to tell me what they are. Don't have conversations about my future as if I am not part of the family."

His voice softened.

"I didn't mean to make you feel excluded."

"I know you may not have meant to."

That was the difference I had been trying to explain all day.

Intentions mattered.

So did actions.

We spoke for a few more minutes, but neither of us had much left to say.

He told me he would speak to Candice.

I told him I expected an honest conversation with both of them, though I was not ready to decide when that would happen.

Before we hung up, he said he loved me.

"I love you too," I replied.

I meant it.

The call did not fix what had happened.

But it gave me something I had not had that morning.

I knew Magnolia Gardens was not a random name on a box.

I knew Julian and Candice had discussed my living arrangements before Sunday.

And I knew my son had not believed I had agreed to move.

When I put the telephone down, I sat at the table for a long time.

The questions on the paper remained beside me.

I drew a line beneath the third one.

Then I added another sentence.

Knowing about an option is not the same as choosing it.

I read it twice.

It was the clearest way I could describe what I wanted Julian to understand.

*END PART 14**

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: Hearing Julian Admit What He Knew Did Not Settle the Matter, but It Helped Me Separate His Choices From the Ones Candice Had Made

Julian did not call before dinner.
