10 – I Had Always Believed Family Decisions Were Made Together, Until My Son Admitted That Conversations About My Future Had Already Taken Place

After Julian ended the call, I remained at the kitchen table.

I didn't move for several minutes.

The phone lay beside the paper, and Arthur's photograph stood near the edge of the table.

I kept looking at the same three things.

The phone.

The questions.

The photograph.

They seemed to belong to different parts of my life, yet that morning they had become connected.

The phone represented the conversation I had finally stopped avoiding.

The questions represented everything I still needed to understand.

And the photograph reminded me of the person who had once helped me feel less alone when life became difficult.

I wished Arthur were there.

Not because I wanted him to solve the problem for me.

Because I wanted to tell him what had happened and hear him ask the questions I was struggling to ask myself.

He had been good at separating what mattered from what merely made noise.

I had not always appreciated that when he was alive.

Now I missed it.

I picked up the phone and looked at the screen.

There was no new message.

I wasn't surprised.

Julian had said he would call later.

I had to decide whether I would trust him to do that or spend the next hour checking my phone.

I put it face down.

Then I returned to the question that had unsettled me most.

He had known there were discussions about what would happen next.

What did that mean?

Had someone suggested that I move?

Had he believed the idea was temporary?

Had he thought I had already agreed?

Or had he simply avoided asking because he didn't want to be involved?

I couldn't answer any of those questions.

I didn't want to invent an explanation just because the uncertainty was uncomfortable.

So I reminded myself of what I actually knew.

Candice had packed my belongings.

The box had been labeled with my name and the name of Magnolia Gardens.

Julian had admitted that discussions had taken place.

He had not explained what those discussions involved.

That was the truth as far as I knew it.

I stood up and carried the photograph toward the hallway.

I wanted to return it to my bedroom.

But when I reached the doorway, I stopped.

I looked at the nightstand.

The empty space was still there.

I could have placed the photograph back in its usual position immediately.

Instead, I carried it back to the kitchen.

I wasn't ready to put it there again.

That surprised me.

For years, the photograph had been a source of comfort.

Now I wanted to keep it close because I was afraid of what might happen if I left it somewhere else.

I didn't like feeling that way in my own home.

I placed the frame beside the folded paper.

Then I went to the front door and checked the lock.

It held.

I knew it would.

I had already tested it earlier.

Still, I stood there with my hand resting on the handle.

I thought about the decision I had made at 9:15.

At the time, it had seemed straightforward.

I wanted to establish a boundary.

I wanted to stop feeling as though other people could make decisions about my home without considering my wishes.

Changing the locks had been a way of saying that I was still responsible for what happened there.

But the sight of the suitcases had changed how I understood that decision.

It wasn't enough to establish a boundary and hope everyone would respect it.

I also had to be willing to explain why it mattered.

And I had to be prepared for the possibility that someone would disagree.

I returned to the kitchen.

The clock showed that the morning was moving along, although I had lost track of how much time had passed since Candice arrived.

I made myself a small breakfast.

I wasn't hungry, but I knew I needed to eat.

I took a plate from the cupboard and placed it on the table.

The ordinary task helped me think.

I had spent so many years worrying about the feelings of the people I loved that I had sometimes forgotten to ask whether they were worrying about mine.

That didn't mean they never cared.

It didn't mean every difficult moment had been deliberate.

But it did mean I had allowed an imbalance to develop.

I had become responsible for preventing arguments.

Other people had become accustomed to my willingness to do it.

And whenever I finally objected, the objection seemed to become the problem.

I had to stop participating in that pattern.

I finished eating and washed the plate.

Then I dried my hands and returned to the table.

The phone was still face down.

I picked it up and considered sending Julian a message.

I could ask him to call when he had time.

I could tell him that I wanted to understand what he meant by discussions about my future.

But I decided against it.

He knew I was waiting for an answer.

I had made that clear.

I didn't need to chase him.

I sat down and looked at the questions again.

There was one I hadn't written.

Why hadn't he spoken to me?

I took the pen and added it to the bottom of the page.

Then I stared at it.

The question hurt more than the others.

Candice and I had never been especially close.

I had hoped our relationship would improve over time, but I had learned to accept that we saw things differently.

Julian was another matter.

He was my son.

I had spent years believing that whatever disagreements came between us, we would be able to speak honestly when something important happened.

Perhaps that belief had been too simple.

Perhaps adulthood had changed our relationship in ways I hadn't fully understood.

But I didn't think it was unreasonable to expect him to talk to me before discussions about my future took place.

I wasn't asking him to agree with me.

I was asking him to include me.

There was a difference.

I picked up the photograph and studied it again.

Arthur's hand rested on my shoulder.

I remembered the feeling of it.

I remembered the quiet confidence I had felt standing beside him.

I had always thought that confidence came from knowing he would support me.

Now I wondered whether some of it had come from knowing that I could support myself.

I had done difficult things before.

I had survived the loss of my husband.

I had learned to manage a home alone.

I had made decisions when there was no one beside me to confirm that I was making the right ones.

I could do that again.

I didn't need to become hard or suspicious.

I didn't need to assume that everyone was working against me.

But I did need to stop treating uncertainty as a reason to surrender.

I returned the photograph to the table.

Then I placed the paper beneath it so that the list of questions was no longer visible.

I wasn't finished asking them.

I simply didn't want to spend the entire morning staring at them.

I went to the window.

The street looked quiet.

The ordinary world continued around my home, unaware of the decisions I was trying to make.

I watched for a few moments, then stepped away.

Julian had said he would call later.

I would give him the opportunity to do that.

But when we spoke again, I would ask him to explain what he meant.

I would listen to his answer.

And I would no longer accept being left out of a conversation about my own future.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Tried to Continue My Sunday as Usual, but Every
