The brown one is the case I use when I travel with Martha."

"I understand."

"And the photograph was on my nightstand when I went to bed last night."

He didn't respond.

I waited.

I wanted him to say something that showed he understood why I was upset.

I wanted him to ask why Candice had packed those things.

Instead, he said, "Have you spoken to her about it?"

I almost laughed.

Not because the question was funny.

Because I had spent the morning doing exactly that.

"Yes, Julian. I asked her."

"What did she say?"

"She told me I was making things difficult."

I heard him breathe out.

I couldn't tell whether he was frustrated with me or with the situation.

That uncertainty was familiar.

It had followed me through so many conversations that I had learned to recognize it before anyone explained what they were feeling.

I had often responded by becoming gentler.

I would lower my voice.

I would reassure him that I wasn't trying to cause trouble.

I would explain that I loved him and didn't want him to feel caught between us.

But that morning, I was tired of reassuring everyone before they had even considered what I was saying.

"I also asked her where she intended to take my things," I continued.

"And?"

"She didn't give me a clear answer."

The silence returned.

I looked at the handwritten questions on the paper beside me.

I had written them down because I didn't want the conversation to drift away from what mattered.

I wanted to keep it simple.

"Julian, did you know about the box?"

"I didn't pack anything, Mom."

That wasn't quite the question I had asked.

I noticed the difference immediately.

He had told me what he hadn't done.

He hadn't told me what he knew.

I took a breath.

"I'm not asking whether you packed it."

He remained quiet.

"I'm asking whether you knew Candice had gathered my things and put them in her car."

"I don't know why you're asking me like that."

"Because I need an honest answer."

His voice became sharper.

"I am giving you an honest answer."

I looked down at the table.

There was a time when hearing irritation in Julian's voice would have made me retreat.

I would have worried that I had pushed too hard.

I would have tried to repair the conversation before we had finished discussing the problem.

That instinct was still there.

I could feel it.

But I didn't follow it.

"Then please answer the question I asked."

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

I could hear a faint sound in the background on his end, but I couldn't make out what it was.

I wondered whether he was alone.

I wondered whether Candice had already told him everything she wanted him to know.

Then I stopped myself.

I had promised myself that I would not fill every silence with guesses.

I needed to give him a chance to speak.

Finally, he said, "I knew there had been discussions about what would happen next."

I sat very still.

"What discussions?"

"Mom, I don't want to get into all of this over the phone."

I looked at the paper.

The question about whether he knew had been the one I was most afraid to ask.

Now I had an answer that was not quite an answer.

"There have been discussions about me leaving my own house?"

He sighed.

"That's not what I said."

"Then tell me what you did say."

He didn't respond immediately.

I waited.

I could feel my fingers tightening around the phone.

I forced them to relax.

I didn't want to frighten myself with conclusions I hadn't earned.

But I couldn't ignore what he had admitted.

There had been discussions.

He knew about them.

And I had not been part of them.

"Julian, I live here. Why would people be discussing what happens to me without talking to me first?"

"I don't think anyone was trying to hurt you."

I stared at the photograph.

He hadn't answered the question.

He had offered an explanation for other people's intentions instead.

Perhaps he genuinely believed it.

Perhaps he wanted to believe it because the alternative was too difficult to face.

I couldn't know.

But good intentions, even when they existed, did not explain why my belongings had been packed.

"I didn't ask whether anyone wanted to hurt me."

He fell silent.

"I asked why my things were in Candice's car."

"I'll talk to her."

I felt a brief sense of relief.

At least he was willing to speak to her.

Then I realized that he still hadn't told me what he knew.

"Before you do that, I need you to understand something."

"What?"

"I changed the locks because I wanted to make a decision about my own home. I didn't know about those suitcases until I saw them."

"I know about the locks."

"Then you know why I'm asking questions."

He didn't answer.

I looked toward the front door.

The new lock was out of sight from where I sat, but I could still picture it.

I had thought changing it would be the hardest part of the day.

Now I understood that the locks were only one part of a much larger problem.

I had to find out whether my son understood that I was entitled to make decisions about my own life.

And I had to accept that his answer might not be what I wanted.

"Mom, I have to go."

The words came so suddenly that I almost asked him to stay on the line.

Instead, I looked down at the paper.

"All right."

"I'll call you later."

I wanted to ask when.

I wanted to ask whether he would speak to Candice before calling me again.

I wanted to ask whether he had any idea what Magnolia Gardens meant.

But I had already asked enough questions for one conversation.

I didn't want to turn the call into another argument simply because I was afraid of being left without answers.

So I said goodbye.

Then I ended the call.

For several seconds, I continued holding the phone against my ear.

There was nothing there.

I lowered it slowly and placed it on the table.

Julian had not told me that he knew about the packed suitcases.

He had not told me that he didn't know, either.

He had admitted that discussions had taken place about what would happen next.

That was all.

It wasn't enough to understand the situation.

But it was enough to make one thing clear.

I could no longer assume that my son was unaware of what was happening simply because he hadn't spoken to me about it.

I picked up Arthur's photograph.

I held it for a moment, then set it down carefully.

I was still his mother.

I still loved him.

And I still wanted to believe that he would do the right thing once he understood what was at stake.

But I could no longer protect him from the questions that belonged to him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I Had Always Believed Family Decisions Were Made Together, Until My Son Admitted That Conversations About My Future Had Already Taken Place

Julian didn't answer immediately.
