6 – I Wanted to Believe Julian Had Nothing to Do With the Suitcases, but I Could No Longer Protect Him From Questions He Needed to Answer

I finally went inside.

Not because Candice had answered my questions.

She hadn't.

I went inside because I needed a moment away from her car and the sight of my belongings packed into it.

I carried Arthur's photograph with me.

The frame felt heavier than usual, although I knew that was only because I was holding it so tightly.

I placed it on the kitchen table.

For a few seconds, I stood there looking at it.

The kitchen was quiet.

The coffee I had made earlier was no longer hot, and I could see a faint ring on the table where the cup had rested.

Everything looked ordinary.

That almost made me angry.

How could a morning that had begun with such a simple decision have become so unsettling?

I had changed the locks.

I had expected an argument.

I had not expected to find my life packed into someone else's car.

I sat down and tried to think carefully.

I didn't want to jump to conclusions about Julian.

He was my son, and I loved him.

That love had never depended on his being perfect.

He had made mistakes, as I had.

There had been times when he disappointed me, and there had been times when I knew I had disappointed him.

We were a family.

We had history.

I didn't want one terrible morning to erase all of that.

But love could not answer the questions in front of me.

I had to separate what I knew from what I feared.

I knew Candice had my suitcases.

I knew my belongings had been packed.

I knew my medication and reading glasses were among them.

I knew Arthur's photograph had been removed from my nightstand.

I also knew that Candice had refused to give me a clear explanation.

Those were the facts.

Whether Julian knew anything about the situation remained unanswered.

I had spent years making excuses for him whenever I felt caught between him and Candice.

Perhaps I had been afraid that asking too many questions would make him feel he had to defend his marriage.

Perhaps I had worried that he would stop visiting if our conversations became difficult.

I couldn't deny those fears.

But I couldn't allow them to decide what I was permitted to ask.

I picked up my phone.

Julian's number was there, exactly where it had always been.

I considered calling him.

Then I put the phone down again.

I wanted to speak to him calmly.

I wanted to hear what he knew without turning the conversation into another family argument.

Most of all, I wanted to be sure that I wasn't asking him to choose between people before I understood what had happened.

I stood and walked to the window.

From there, I could see part of the driveway.

Candice was still outside.

She had moved away from the car and was looking at her phone.

I couldn't tell whether she was reading a message or preparing to make another call.

I didn't try to guess.

I had already spent too much time trying to imagine what other people were thinking.

I turned away from the window.

The photograph was waiting on the table.

I sat down again and touched the edge of the frame.

Arthur and I had been married for forty years when that picture was taken.

Forty years was a long time to build a life with someone.

It was long enough to learn the difference between an ordinary disagreement and something that needed to be taken seriously.

Arthur would not have told me to ignore the box.

He would have wanted me to find out why it was there.

He would also have reminded me not to let anger make decisions for me.

I could almost hear him saying that I should ask the question once, listen carefully to the answer, and then decide what to do.

I wished I could ask him now.

Instead, I had to do it myself.

I picked up my phone again.

This time, I didn't put it down.

I wasn't ready to call Julian yet, but I was ready to stop avoiding the conversation.

If Candice wouldn't explain what she was doing, I would ask him directly whether he knew anything about it.

I would not accuse him before hearing his answer.

But I would not pretend that the question didn't matter.

I placed the phone beside Arthur's photograph.

Then I returned to the front door.

The new lock caught my attention immediately.

It was a small piece of metal.

Nothing more.

Yet I had never noticed how much meaning could be attached to something so ordinary.

For years, I had thought of the front door as a way to keep the outside world outside.

Now I understood that a boundary could be necessary even when the people on the other side were family.

That didn't make it pleasant.

It didn't make me feel proud.

It simply made it necessary.

I checked the lock once, then stepped away.

I wasn't going to stand there repeatedly testing it.

I had changed it for a reason.

I needed to trust my own decision.

When I returned to the kitchen, I found myself thinking again about the label on the box.

EVELYN — MAGNOLIA GARDENS.

I wondered whether Candice had written it herself.

I wondered how long the box had been sitting somewhere before it reached the car.

I wondered whether the suitcases had been packed all at once or whether my belongings had been collected over time.

I had no answers.

I stopped myself from building an entire story out of questions.

The truth was that I knew only what I had seen.

That was enough to justify asking for an explanation.

It wasn't enough to decide what everyone else had intended.

I had to remember that distinction.

Otherwise, I would be doing exactly what I feared Candice had done to me: making decisions about another person's life without giving them a chance to speak.

I didn't want to become that kind of person.

I wanted to be firm without being cruel.

I wanted to protect my home without pretending I had no responsibility for how I treated the people around me.

And I wanted Julian to understand that loving him did not mean I would remain silent whenever something troubled me.

I took a piece of paper from a drawer and placed it on the table.

Then I wrote down the questions I needed answered.

Why were my belongings packed?

Who had decided that they should be moved?

What did Magnolia Gardens have to do with the situation?

And did Julian know?

I looked at the list.

It wasn't much.

Four questions.

Four things I had every right to ask.

I folded the paper and placed it beside the photograph.

Then I took a sip of the coffee.

It had gone cold.

I poured it away and made another cup.

The ordinary motion steadied me.

I could not control what Candice chose to tell me.

I could not control what Julian believed.

But I could control whether I asked clear questions and whether I accepted answers that made sense.

For the first time that morning, I felt capable of doing that.

Not comfortable.

Not certain.

Capable.

I carried my fresh coffee to the table and sat down.

The phone remained beside my hand.

I would speak to Julian.

I would give him a chance to explain.

But I would no longer protect him from the truth simply because the truth might make him uncomfortable.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Name on the Cardboard Box Stayed
