This is something else."

I gestured toward the car.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that I wasn't going to let the conversation return to the subject she preferred.

I wasn't interested in arguing about whether changing the locks had been an overreaction.

That decision could be discussed separately.

The packed belongings were a different matter.

They suggested that someone had already begun acting on a decision that concerned my life.

And I had been left out of it.

I had always thought that if somebody wanted me to make a major change, they would speak to me.

They might disagree with me.

They might believe they knew better.

They might even be disappointed by my answer.

But I had believed that my involvement was a basic requirement.

Now I wasn't sure.

I looked at the handwritten label on the box again.

My name.

The place name.

Nothing else.

No explanation.

No note.

No indication that I had agreed to any of it.

Just a box prepared for someone who was apparently expected to go somewhere.

I felt anger rising, but beneath it was something more painful.

Humiliation.

I didn't like admitting that.

I had always considered myself a practical woman.

I didn't expect life to be fair every day.

I understood that families could be complicated and that people sometimes behaved badly when they were frustrated.

But I had never imagined that I would stand beside a car and find evidence that my own belongings had been packed without my knowledge.

I had thought that if trouble ever came to my door, I would recognize it.

Instead, it had appeared in familiar suitcases.

Candice moved toward the driver's side.

I watched her for a moment, wondering whether she intended to leave.

I didn't ask her to stay.

I didn't beg her to explain.

I had already asked enough questions to know that she wasn't ready to give me the answers I wanted.

Before she could get into the car, I spoke again.

"I want my belongings returned to the house."

She stopped.

Then she turned around.

"You can take them yourself."

The words were delivered casually, almost as if she were discussing groceries or laundry.

I looked at her.

She had packed the things.

She had placed them in her car.

And now she was telling me to retrieve them.

For a second, I couldn't decide whether to laugh or become even angrier.

I chose neither.

I simply looked at the box.

I didn't want to handle my belongings as though I were collecting items from a lost-property office.

I wanted an explanation.

I wanted to know why anyone had thought this was acceptable.

And I wanted to know whether Julian had any idea what was happening.

His name returned to my thoughts, and with it came the familiar worry I had carried for years.

I could already imagine him hearing Candice's version of the morning.

He would hear that I had changed the locks.

He would hear that I had become difficult.

He might even hear that I wasn't behaving like myself.

But would he hear about the suitcases?

Would he ask why my medication and nightclothes had been packed?

Would he wonder why his mother's photograph of his father had been removed from her bedroom?

I didn't know.

The uncertainty made me feel lonelier than I wanted to admit.

I had always hoped that my son would be able to see a situation clearly, even when the people involved disagreed.

But I also knew how easily family loyalty could become a reason to avoid uncomfortable questions.

I didn't want Julian to take sides without understanding what had happened.

At the same time, I couldn't keep making excuses for him before he had even spoken.

He was an adult.

He could ask his own questions.

He could decide what he believed after hearing the facts.

And I could stop trying to protect him from every unpleasant moment.

I took a slow breath.

Candice remained beside the car.

Neither of us spoke for several seconds.

Then I looked at the box once more.

I thought about the person who had written my name on it.

I wondered what they had been thinking while they did it.

Had they believed I would simply accept whatever came next?

Had they assumed I would be too upset or confused to challenge them?

Or had they never considered my wishes important enough to ask about?

I couldn't know.

But I could decide what I would do now.

I wasn't going to pretend that the packed suitcases were harmless.

I wasn't going to accept an explanation that avoided the question.

And I wasn't going to allow the fact that Candice was my daughter-in-law to erase my right to be treated with respect.

I had spent years telling myself that family problems should remain inside the family.

I had believed that discussing difficult matters too openly would only make things worse.

Maybe that belief had helped me avoid some arguments.

It had also made it easier to remain silent when I should have spoken.

I had to face that.

My silence hadn't created every problem between us.

But it had allowed some of them to continue.

I looked at Candice.

"I need to know what you were planning."

She didn't answer.

I waited a little longer.

Still nothing.

I realized then that I could not force her to tell me the truth.

I could only refuse to accept silence as an answer.

The new locks were still on the door.

My belongings were still in her car.

And the photograph of Arthur remained in my hands.

I looked down at it.

For eleven years, that picture had reminded me of the life I had shared with my husband.

That morning, it reminded me of something else.

I had a life of my own, too.

It was mine to protect.

Mine to make decisions about.

And mine to live, even if the people closest to me didn't agree with every choice I made.

I had changed the locks at 9:15 because I wanted to establish a boundary.

By the time I stood beside Candice's car, I understood that the locks were only the beginning of the problem.

The real question was why someone had started packing my life into suitcases before I had even been told that a move was being considered.

I couldn't answer that question yet.

But I wasn't going to stop asking.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: I Had Spent
