3 – The More I Looked at the Box, the Harder It Became to Believe That My Belongings Had Been Packed Without a Plan

Candice didn't answer me.

She looked toward the house, then toward the street, as though she expected somebody else to arrive and take over the conversation.

I waited for her to speak.

She didn't.

Finally, I asked the question again.

"Where were you planning to take these things?"

She pressed her lips together.

"I haven't decided everything yet."

The answer made my stomach tighten.

Everything yet.

Those words suggested that there was a plan, even if she wasn't ready to explain it.

I glanced at the box.

My medication was still visible beside the folded nightgowns.

I thought about how easily a person could forget something important when leaving home in a hurry.

Then I thought about the fact that somebody else had apparently decided which things I would take with me.

It was a strange feeling, realizing that your belongings could be arranged into a life you had never agreed to live.

I had spent years making decisions about my own home.

I knew what I wanted to keep.

I knew what I could live without.

I knew the objects that mattered because they reminded me of Arthur, our marriage, and the years we had shared.

Candice had looked at those things and packed them into a box.

She had done it without asking me.

And when I found them, she seemed more offended by my questions than troubled by what she had done.

I picked up the photograph again.

I didn't want it left in the car.

The frame had a small scratch along one corner, something I had noticed years earlier.

Arthur had once offered to replace it.

I told him not to bother.

I liked the photograph as it was.

Now, holding it in my hands, I felt an ache that had nothing to do with the frame.

I had spent eleven years learning how to live without my husband.

I had never imagined that one day I would have to defend the place where I kept his memory.

I carried the photograph a few steps away from the car.

Candice followed me with her eyes.

"You're overreacting."

I stopped.

For a moment, I considered answering her the way I might have years earlier.

I could have explained how upsetting it was to find my bedroom belongings packed without my knowledge.

I could have reminded her that the house was mine.

I could have asked her to imagine how she would feel if somebody gathered her things while she was asleep.

But I had a feeling none of those explanations would make a difference.

She already knew the box contained my belongings.

She already knew I had not agreed to leave.

The problem wasn't that she failed to understand why I was upset.

The problem was that she didn't seem to think my feelings should determine what happened next.

I turned back toward her.

"I'm asking you a question."

She gave a short, frustrated sigh.

"And I'm telling you that you need to calm down."

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I said nothing.

There are times when silence is the only way to stop another person from turning your words against you.

I had learned that lesson slowly.

I had learned it through conversations that started with a simple concern and ended with me apologizing for bringing it up.

I had learned it by watching Julian become uncomfortable whenever Candice and I disagreed.

And I had learned it by telling myself that keeping the peace was more important than being heard.

I wasn't going to make that mistake again.

I looked at the car.

The suitcases were still there.

They hadn't appeared by magic.

They hadn't packed themselves.

Somebody had carried them out of my home and placed them in that back seat.

Somebody had also collected my nightclothes, slippers, medication, glasses, and photograph.

Those were facts.

I didn't need to prove that I had a right to be upset.

I didn't need Candice to agree that what she had done was wrong.

I needed to know what she intended to do with my belongings.

"Was I supposed to leave today?" I asked.

Her expression changed.

Only slightly, but enough for me to notice.

She looked away from me.

"I never said that."

"You didn't have to."

She shifted her weight.

I could hear a car passing somewhere down the street.

The ordinary sound made the moment feel even stranger.

The world continued as if nothing unusual were happening.

Somewhere, people were preparing breakfast.

Somebody was probably reading the Sunday paper.

Somebody else was making plans for the afternoon.

And I was standing outside my own house, trying to understand why my personal belongings had been packed into another person's vehicle.

I had never thought of myself as helpless.

I had lived through grief.

I had managed a household.

I had handled responsibilities that once seemed overwhelming.

After Arthur died, there were days when even the smallest tasks required more effort than I wanted to admit.

But I had kept going.

I had paid attention to the things that needed doing.

I had made choices.

I had learned how to be alone without feeling that my life was over.

So why had I spent so much time allowing myself to be treated as though I couldn't decide what was best for me?

I knew the answer, although I didn't like it.

Because I was afraid of losing Julian.

I was afraid that if I challenged Candice too directly, he would feel forced to choose between his wife and his mother.

I was afraid that every disagreement would become another reason for him to stay away.

And because I was afraid, I had made myself easier to ignore.

That realization hurt.

But it also made something clear.

If I continued to remain silent simply because I wanted my son to be comfortable, I would eventually have nothing left to say.

Candice looked at me again.

"Can we please stop this?"

I shook my head.

"Not until you tell me why my things are packed."

She glanced at the box.

For a moment, I thought she might finally answer.

Instead, she said, "You're making this much harder than it needs to be."

I almost asked her how it could possibly be easier.

Should I have thanked her for packing my clothes?

Should I have congratulated her for finding a place to put my medication?

Should I have climbed into the car and allowed her to drive me wherever she had decided I belonged?

The questions remained in my head.

I didn't say them aloud.

I was beginning to understand that I didn't need to make my anger bigger to make my position clear.

The facts were already enough.

My things had been removed from my bedroom.

They had been placed in a box.

The box had been labeled with my name and the name of a place.

And none of it had been discussed with me.

I looked down at Arthur's photograph.

His face seemed almost painfully familiar.

There had been a time when I could tell him anything.

When I was frightened, I told him.

When I was angry, I told him.

When I wasn't sure whether I was being unreasonable, I asked him to help me think it through.

I missed that more than I could explain.

But I also knew that I couldn't spend the rest of my life wishing someone else were there to tell me what to do.

Arthur had loved me.

He had trusted me to manage my life.

I needed to extend that same trust to myself.

I placed the photograph somewhere safe, away from the box.

Then I turned toward Candice one more time.

"I didn't give you permission to pack my belongings."

She looked at me without speaking.

"And I haven't agreed to leave my home."

The words sounded firm when I said them.

Inside, I was still shaken.

I was still trying to understand how something so personal could have happened without my knowledge.

But I no longer felt the same need to soften every sentence.

I had spent enough time making sure other people weren't uncomfortable.

For once, I was going to let them sit with what they had done.

Candice lowered her eyes.

She didn't apologize.

She didn't explain.

She simply stood beside the car, with the open rear door behind her and my belongings in plain view.

That was when I realized that the truth might not come from asking her the same question a dozen different ways.

If I wanted to understand what had been happening, I would have to pay attention to what she had already shown me.

The packed suitcases.

The labeled box.

The photograph removed from my nightstand.

Those things told me more than her excuses had.

And they left me with a question I could no longer ignore.

If Candice had been preparing to move my belongings, who else knew about it?

<a
