Something is clearly wrong."

I didn't turn around.

I stepped closer to the open car door.

The box was within reach, and I could see its contents without moving anything.

Folded nightgowns.

Two pairs of slippers.

My blood-pressure medication.

My reading glasses.

And a framed photograph.

I knew that photograph as well as I knew the house itself.

It was the picture of Arthur and me taken on our fortieth wedding anniversary.

He stood behind me with one hand resting gently on my shoulder.

We were both smiling.

Not the stiff smiles people put on when a camera was pointed at them, but the kind that came from having shared a long life together.

Arthur had been gone for eleven years.

I had learned to live with his absence, although there were still mornings when I reached for something he used to keep nearby before remembering that he was no longer there.

The photograph was one of the things I kept close.

It belonged on my nightstand.

It had been there when I went to bed the night before.

I was certain of that.

I had looked at it before turning off the light.

Now it was sitting in a cardboard box on the floor of Candice's car.

My chest tightened.

I picked it up carefully.

For a moment, I could only look at Arthur's face.

I remembered the trip.

I remembered the years that had followed it.

I remembered the quiet life we had made in that house, one ordinary day at a time.

Then another thought pushed its way through the memories.

Candice had packed my bedroom.

Not some cupboard in the garage.

Not a box of things I had decided to give away.

My nightclothes.

My medication.

My glasses.

The photograph beside my bed.

Those were the things a person gathered when preparing to move someone from one place to another.

And they were already packed.

I felt a coldness settle over me.

This had not happened by accident.

Somebody had taken the time to go through my things and decide what I would need.

They had chosen what to pack.

They had placed it in the car.

They had even labeled the box.

All of it had happened while I was still living under the same roof.

While I slept in my own bed.

I had thought the problem was that Candice didn't respect my decisions.

Standing beside that car, I began to understand that I might have underestimated what she believed she had the right to decide.

I turned toward her.

"Candice."

She stopped talking.

I held up the framed photograph.

Her eyes moved from the picture to my face.

Something changed in her expression.

It was brief.

A small shift around her eyes, followed by a tightening of her mouth.

But I saw it.

She ended the call.

For a second, she didn't move.

Then she started toward me.

"Please don't make a scene, Evelyn."

I looked down at the photograph.

Then I looked at her.

"Why was this in your car?"

She glanced at the open door.

"You shouldn't be going through my things."

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I couldn't believe what I had just heard.

Her things?

The suitcases belonged to me.

The medication belonged to me.

The reading glasses belonged to me.

And the photograph she had packed was of my husband.

I had not opened her purse.

I had not searched her bedroom.

I had simply looked into a car and found my own belongings packed inside it.

"Those are my suitcases," I said.

Candice folded her arms.

"I know what they are."

"Then explain why they're here."

She looked past me toward the house.

I watched her face carefully, waiting for an answer that made sense.

None came.

Instead, she seemed more concerned about the fact that I had discovered the box than about what the box contained.

That bothered me more than her anger.

I had expected her to deny everything.

I had expected her to tell me that I had misunderstood.

But she had already acknowledged that the suitcases were mine.

And she still hadn't explained why they were packed.

I lowered the photograph slightly.

"Did you go into my bedroom?"

Candice looked at me.

"That's not the point."

"It is to me."

She exhaled impatiently.

"You always do this."

I had heard versions of that sentence before.

Whenever I asked a question she didn't want to answer, the conversation somehow became about my supposed behavior.

I was too sensitive.

I was making things difficult.

I was refusing to see the bigger picture.

The words changed, but the result was always the same.

I ended up defending my right to ask.

Not this time.

I held the photograph against my chest.

"Why did you pack my things?"

Candice's jaw tightened.

"I was trying to handle a situation."

"What situation?"

She didn't answer immediately.

I waited.

The silence grew uncomfortable, but I refused to fill it for her.

Finally, she looked away.

"You need to calm down."

I thought about the box again.

The nightgowns.

The slippers.

The medicine.

My reading glasses.

A person who was simply trying to handle a difficult situation would have spoken to me first.

They would have asked what I wanted.

They would have explained what they were planning.

They would not have quietly packed the things I needed to get through an ordinary day.

I looked at the photograph once more.

Arthur had been gone for eleven years, but I could still imagine the expression he would have worn if he had seen this.

He had always believed that people should be treated with dignity, even when you disagreed with them.

He had also believed that kindness meant very little if it required you to let someone walk all over you.

I had remembered the first lesson better than the second.

Perhaps that was part of the reason I had allowed things to reach this point.

I placed the photograph carefully on top of the box.

Then I looked at Candice.

"I want an answer."

She stared back at me.

For the first time that morning, I could see that she understood I wasn't going to let the matter disappear.

I had changed the locks because I wanted to take back control of my own home.

Now I was standing beside her car with evidence that someone had been preparing to move me out of it.

And I wanted to know who had made that decision.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The More I Looked at the Box, the Harder It Became to Believe That My Belongings Had Been Packed Without a Plan

I looked into the back of Candice's car, and for a moment, I couldn't make sense of what I was seeing.
