Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas, son.”

“We're getting ready to leave. The children are already asking about the tree.”

“I've got the star waiting for them.”

He laughed.

“They'll be happy.”

“Drive carefully.”

“We will. See you soon.”

I put the phone down and looked around the house.

I felt nervous.

Not because I was afraid of the expense.

Not because I was waiting for somebody to complain.

I was nervous because I wanted the day to be good.

I wanted to see my grandchildren.

I wanted to spend time with Colin.

And I wanted to find a way to be comfortable around Vanessa again.

Those were ordinary hopes.

I reminded myself that I didn't have to make every moment perfect to enjoy them.

The first car arrived shortly before ten.

I heard the tires on the driveway and walked to the front door.

One of Colin's relatives stepped out carrying a covered dish.

“Morning! Merry Christmas!”

“Merry Christmas. Come on in.”

She held the dish toward me.

“I brought the vegetables.”

“Thank you. The kitchen is ready for them.”

I took the dish and carried it inside.

She removed her coat and asked where she could put her bag.

I showed her.

Then she followed me into the kitchen and helped place the vegetables on the counter.

It was an easy beginning.

A few minutes later, another car arrived.

Then another.

The house slowly filled with familiar voices.

People greeted one another in the hallway.

Coats went onto the spare bed.

Someone asked where the bathroom was.

Someone else wanted to know whether the children could play in the living room.

I answered the questions as they came.

I didn't rush to take over every task.

When a relative offered to carry a tray, I let her.

When someone asked where the extra glasses were, I showed him.

When the kitchen became crowded, I asked two people to move their work to the dining room.

Nobody objected.

The day was busy, but it was manageable.

At ten-thirty, Colin and Vanessa arrived with the children.

I heard their voices before I saw them.

“Grandpa!”

The youngest ran through the doorway with his arms open.

I bent down and caught him in a hug.

He nearly knocked me backward.

“Careful there,” I said, laughing.

He held on tightly.

“Is the star ready?”

“It is.”

He pulled away and looked toward the living room.

His sibling came in behind him, carrying a small present.

“Can we put it on now?”

I looked at Colin.

He smiled.

“Go ahead, Dad. We can help.”

I carried the wooden star to the tree.

The children stood beside me, both trying to reach it at once.

“Wait a minute,” I said. “One at a time.”

They laughed.

I lifted the star while the older child guided the base into place.

The younger one held the lower branch steady.

For a second, the star leaned to one side.

We adjusted it.

Then it sat straight.

“There,” I said.

The children stepped back and admired their work.

“It's perfect,” one of them announced.

I smiled.

“It is.”

Vanessa stood near the doorway watching us.

She looked tired, but she was smiling.

“Mom used to let Colin do that,” she said.

“She did.”

“Was he careful?”

I laughed.

“Not especially.”

Colin shook his head.

“Dad still tells that story.”

“Because it's true.”

Everyone laughed.

The children ran off to look at the presents, and Colin came over to help me carry another tray into the kitchen.

For a moment, we worked side by side without speaking.

Then he said quietly, “I'm glad we're doing this.”

“So am I.”

He glanced toward the living room.

“Vanessa's been trying.”

“I know.”

“She doesn't always know how to say things.”

“Neither do I.”

He smiled.

We carried the tray to the counter.

Then he went to help one of the relatives arrange the drinks.

I remained in the kitchen, looking at the food.

There was enough for everyone.

The dishes were arranged neatly.

The work was being shared.

And nobody had asked me to pay for something that hadn't been discussed.

I realized I had been waiting for the day to become difficult.

I had expected somebody to complain about the budget or ask me to cover an unexpected expense.

I had expected to feel that familiar pressure to rescue the situation.

But the morning was passing without any of those things.

I wasn't going to assume that the whole day would be easy.

Still, I allowed myself to enjoy what was happening.

I poured myself a small cup of coffee and stood near the kitchen window.

Outside, the maple tree moved gently in the breeze.

The branches were bare, but the tree looked strong.

I thought about the years Diane and I had watched it grow.

We had planted it when Colin was young.

We had watered it through dry summers and watched it lose branches during storms.

It had not grown perfectly.

It had grown steadily.

That was enough.

A voice called from the dining room.

“Where do you want the bread?”

I turned.

“On the counter beside the vegetables, please.”

The person carrying it nodded and moved past me.

I finished my coffee and returned to work.

At noon, everyone began gathering around the dining table.

The children chose their seats.

The adults moved chairs to make room.

Someone brought another serving dish from the kitchen.

I stood at the end of the table for a moment, looking at the people around me.

There were relatives I had known for decades.

There were younger family members who had grown up since Diane's death.

There were children who were old enough to remember some of our earlier Christmases and others who had only heard the stories.

I felt the absence of my wife.

I always would.

But I also felt grateful that the family had gathered in the home we had built together.

For once, I wasn't standing apart from the celebration, mentally calculating what I still needed to do.

I was part of it.

Colin looked across the table.

“Dad, are you sitting down?”

“I am.”

I took my place.

Vanessa was beside the children, helping them settle.

She looked over at me.

“Everything looks lovely.”

“Thank you.”

She paused.

“And thank you for having us.”

I met her eyes.

“You're welcome.”

She nodded and returned to helping the children.

I didn't need her to say anything more.

The meal began.

People passed the dishes around.

Someone asked for more potatoes.

The children talked about their presents.

A relative told a story that made everyone laugh.

The conversation moved from one subject to another.

It wasn't perfectly organized.

A little gravy spilled near the end of the table.

Someone reached across another person's plate.

The youngest child announced that he didn't like the vegetables, then asked for more bread.

I laughed.

It was exactly the sort of ordinary chaos I had wanted.

At one point, Colin leaned toward me.

“Do you need anything?”

I looked at my plate.

“No, I'm all right.”

He smiled and returned to his conversation.

The question stayed with me.

Not because it was remarkable in itself.

Because it was the kind of question I had wanted to hear for years.

Not, *Can you pay for this?*

Not, *Can you fix that?*

Just, *Do you need anything?*

I looked around the table.

I saw people helping each other.

I saw Vanessa passing a dish to one of the relatives.

I saw Colin pouring water for the children.

I saw the youngest carefully holding his fork in both hands.

Nobody was doing everything.

Nobody had to.

I took another bite of my meal and leaned back in my chair.

For the first time in a long while, I felt no need to prove that I deserved my place at the table.

I was their father.

I was their grandfather.

I was the owner of the house where we had gathered.

And I was a person who could love his family without giving away every decision, every dollar, and every quiet moment.

That realization did not erase the past.

It did not guarantee that we would never disagree again.

But it gave me something I had been missing.

Room to breathe.

After lunch, the children asked to open their presents.

The adults moved into the living room.

Someone brought out a tray of desserts.

Colin helped me carry the coffee pot.

Vanessa gathered the empty plates.

I offered to take them to the kitchen.

She smiled.

“I'll bring them. You sit with the children.”

I hesitated out of habit.

Then I sat down.

The children were already opening the first presents.

One of them held up a new toy and shouted with delight.

The other asked whether the wrapping paper could be saved.

I laughed and told them to keep whatever pieces they wanted.

Across the room, Vanessa caught my eye.

She gave me a small smile.

I returned it.

There was no grand speech.

No sudden promise that everything would always be different.

There was only a family spending Christmas together, each person doing a little of the work and sharing a little of the joy.

And for that day, it was enough.

*END PART 16**

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: After Christmas, I Discovered That One Good Day Could Not Change Every Old Habit, but It Could Show My Family What We Were Capable of Becoming

I woke before the alarm.
