You're making everything into a calculation.”

I leaned against the pantry door.

“I am trying to make sure we all understand what we've agreed to.”

She was silent for a moment.

Then she said, “The napkins are nothing. I'll take care of those.”

“Fine.”

“And the children's things can be handled by us.”

“That sounds reasonable.”

She seemed irritated that I had not argued.

“I'll send the final list later,” she said.

“All right.”

We ended the call.

I stood in the pantry for another moment, looking at the shelves.

There had been a time when I would have responded to that conversation by telling her not to worry.

I would have offered to pay for everything.

I would have said the extra amount didn't matter.

Then I would have felt resentful when the next request arrived.

This time, I went back to making breakfast.

The house did not fall apart because I had asked a question.

The holiday did not become impossible because I had kept an agreement.

I reminded myself of that as I washed my plate.

Later that afternoon, Colin stopped by to drop off a bag of groceries.

He carried it into the kitchen and set it on the counter.

“Vanessa said these were on the list.”

I looked inside.

There were potatoes, onions, carrots, and a large bag of apples.

“Thank you. These will help.”

“She bought them this morning.”

“Good.”

He watched me put the groceries away.

“She's still upset about the budget.”

“I know.”

“She thinks you're keeping score.”

I closed the pantry door.

“I'm keeping track of what we agreed to spend. That's not the same thing.”

“I told her that.”

“What did she say?”

“She said it feels different from how things used to be.”

I nodded.

“It is different.”

He leaned against the counter.

“Dad, I know you have a point. But I wish there were a way to make this less uncomfortable.”

“So do I.”

“Could you talk to her again?”

“I'll talk to her whenever she wants to discuss the arrangements. But I can't keep having the same conversation until she likes my answer.”

Colin rubbed the back of his neck.

“I suppose that's fair.”

I looked at him.

“Do you think I'm trying to hurt her?”

“No.”

“Do you think I'm trying to make Christmas difficult?”

He hesitated.

“No. I don't think that.”

“Then we have to allow her to be disappointed without treating the disappointment as a problem I must solve.”

He looked toward the dining room.

“I never thought about it that way.”

“Neither did I, for a long time.”

He sat at the table while I finished putting the groceries away.

We talked about the children, his work, and the small repairs he wanted to make at home before the holiday.

For nearly twenty minutes, money never came up.

It felt good.

Before leaving, he helped me carry a box of decorations from the living room to the dining room.

The box contained the ordinary things Diane had collected over the years.

A little wooden reindeer.

Several glass ornaments.

A string of small bells.

And the wooden star we had repaired together more than once.

Colin picked up the star and turned it over in his hands.

“Remember when I broke this?”

I laughed.

“You dropped it.”

“I was carrying it down the stairs.”

“You were running down the stairs.”

“I was excited.”

“You were careless.”

He smiled.

“Mom said it was an accident.”

“It was.”

“She told me the star could be repaired.”

“She was right.”

He ran his thumb over the repaired point.

“I thought you'd throw it away.”

“I thought about it.”

“Really?”

“For about five seconds.”

He laughed.

Then he placed it carefully back in the box.

“I'm glad you kept it.”

“So am I.”

After he left, I put the box beneath the tree.

I did not take the star out again.

There was no reason to rush.

The next morning, Vanessa sent the final food list.

Every item had a name beside it.

The quantities were clear.

The agreed contribution remained unchanged.

I read it through once, then replied that it looked good.

She answered with a short message thanking me.

It wasn't warm, but it was polite.

I decided that was enough for the moment.

I had started to understand that progress did not always arrive as an apology or a long conversation.

Sometimes it arrived as a list with everyone's responsibilities written beside the right items.

That evening, I sat in the living room with the television turned low.

I wasn't watching anything in particular.

The room was warm, and the lights from the small Christmas decorations reflected against the window.

I thought about Diane and the way she used to prepare for family gatherings.

She never seemed frightened of a disagreement.

If somebody complained about the food, she asked what they would have preferred.

If somebody offered to help, she found them a job.

If somebody refused, she carried on.

She didn't spend the rest of the day trying to make them feel better about their refusal.

I had admired that quality without learning it.

After she died, I had tried to fill the empty spaces she left behind.

I became the person who answered every call.

The person who sent money when the children needed something.

The person who said yes before anyone finished explaining what they wanted.

At first, it felt like love.

Eventually, it became a habit.

And habits could continue long after their original purpose had disappeared.

I switched off the television.

The room became quiet.

I went to the kitchen, opened the drawer, and took out my notebook.

I checked the budget once more.

Everything was in order.

I wrote down the final amount I had agreed to contribute and placed a small mark beside it.

Then I closed the notebook.

I wasn't doing that because I wanted to catch anyone making a mistake.

I was doing it because I wanted to keep my own promises without making new ones every time somebody became uncomfortable.

The distinction mattered.

The following day, I received a call from Vanessa.

Her voice sounded calmer than it had earlier in the week.

“I wanted to check whether you have enough serving dishes.”

“I think so, but I'll count them tonight.”

“If you're short, I can bring some from home.”

“That would help.”

She paused.

“I don't want you to think I'm not trying to make this work.”

I was surprised by the admission.

“I don't think that.”

“You've seemed disappointed in me.”

I took a moment before answering.

“I'm disappointed that we didn't talk before the plans were announced. But I'm not trying to hold that against you.”

She was quiet.

“I thought you were happy to help,” she said.

“I was happy to help. I still am.”

“Then I don't understand why everything has to be different.”

“Because I want to be part of the decisions. I don't want to be told what has already been decided and then asked to pay for it.”

She didn't answer right away.

I could hear a cupboard opening and closing on her end.

Finally, she said, “I suppose I should have asked.”

“Yes.”

“I didn't think you would mind.”

“I know.”

It wasn't a full apology.

But it was the closest we had come to discussing the problem without turning it into an argument.

I didn't push her to say more.

Instead, I told her I would check the serving dishes and let her know if anything was missing.

She thanked me and ended the call.

I stood by the counter, holding the phone.

I felt relieved, but I didn't mistake relief for a solution to everything.

One decent conversation could not undo years of habits.

We would have to keep doing things differently.

That evening, I counted the serving dishes.

I had enough for the main meal, but I could use two extra platters for vegetables and bread.

I wrote that down.

Then I sent Vanessa a message asking whether she could bring them.

She replied that she could.

I put the phone away and returned to the living room.

The wooden star waited in its box.

The chairs stood ready.

The food list was settled.

For the first time, the preparations felt shared rather than imposed.

I looked around the house and imagined the family arriving.

There would still be noise.

There would still be mess.

Someone would probably spill something on the floor.

I might have to remind the children not to run near the table.

And I would probably have to ask Uncle Peter to leave some pie for everybody else.

I smiled at the thought.

That was the kind of trouble I wanted.

Not a perfect Christmas.

Just a real one.

*END PART 13**

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: When Vanessa Finally Asked What I Needed for Christmas, I Realized How Long It Had Been Since Anyone Had Thought to Ask Me That Simple Question

The week before Christmas, I found myself checking the dining room more often than necessary.
