That's why I'm trying to change how we handle it.”

He told me he had to go.

We ended the call without arguing.

I sat at the table for another minute.

Then I opened the notebook.

I wrote down the amount I had agreed to contribute toward the meal.

Underneath it, I wrote the things I had agreed to provide.

The house.

The dining room.

The kitchen.

The chairs and tables I already owned.

I looked at the list and realized how much I had once assumed I had to provide beyond those things.

Money.

Answers.

Excuses.

A promise that nobody would feel disappointed.

I closed the notebook.

That evening, I took the Christmas decorations out of the closet.

I had waited to do it because I wanted to know whether we would actually be hosting the gathering.

Now we had an agreement, even if it wasn't a perfect one.

The boxes were heavier than I remembered.

I carried them into the living room one at a time and set them beside the tree stand.

The wooden star Diane had made years ago was wrapped in tissue paper at the top of the largest box.

I unwrapped it carefully.

One point had a small crack near the tip.

Diane had repaired it with glue and a little paint, and I could still see the faint line if I looked closely.

I held it for a while.

When Colin was young, he used to insist on putting the star on the tree himself.

He would drag a chair over and climb up while Diane stood nearby, ready to catch him.

I always told her he was big enough to do it.

She always answered that being big enough didn't mean he couldn't use a little help.

I smiled at the memory.

Then I put the star on the table and began sorting the decorations.

I didn't rush.

I didn't turn on music.

I simply worked through the boxes, separating the lights from the ornaments and checking which strings still worked.

Around eight, my phone buzzed.

It was a message from Vanessa.

*I told everyone that we're sharing the food this year. Some people are fine with it. A few aren't happy.**

I read it twice.

Then I replied.

*Thank you for letting them know. I think sharing the work will make the day easier for everyone.**

She did not answer.

I wasn't sure whether she would ever thank me for the conversation we had the night before.

Perhaps she never would.

I was beginning to understand that a boundary wasn't a bargain in which I gave up money and received appreciation in return.

It was simply a decision about what I could offer without feeling resentful.

I finished checking the lights and found that one string no longer worked.

I put it aside rather than trying to repair it that night.

There would be time later.

Before going to bed, I walked through the dining room.

The table stood in its usual place.

I imagined the room filled with family, children moving between the chairs, people talking over one another, and plates being carried from the kitchen.

I wanted that.

I wanted the noise and the mess and the ordinary business of being together.

I also wanted to sit down in my own house without wondering whether the next request would arrive before I had finished the first one.

Those two wishes were not enemies.

I could welcome my family and still have limits.

I could help without handing over the responsibility for every decision.

I turned off the dining room light.

For the first time since Vanessa announced the thirty guests, I felt that Christmas might be something I could enjoy rather than something I had to survive.

*END PART 10**

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Colin Came Over to Help With the Chairs, and for the First Time in Months We Worked Side by Side Without Turning Every Conversation Into a Request for Money

Vanessa called the next morning.
