I've paid bills, helped with the car, and covered things when money was tight. I don't regret every dollar I've given you. But I can't keep treating every new expense as something that's automatically mine to handle.”

Colin put his mug down.

“Dad, we never said you had to pay for everything.”

“No, you didn't say those exact words.”

“Then why are we having this conversation?”

“Because the extra card expired, and when I decided not to renew it, I discovered that we had different ideas about what it meant.”

Vanessa's face reddened.

“That card was for emergencies.”

“It was supposed to be for emergencies.”

“We used it for groceries.”

“Sometimes.”

“And household things.”

“Sometimes.”

“And now you're making it sound as if we were taking advantage of you.”

I paused before answering.

“I don't want to accuse you of anything. That's why I asked you here.”

Vanessa pulled the paper toward herself.

“The food is the biggest expense,” she said. “Thirty people means a lot of groceries. Then there are drinks, desserts, and things for the children.”

“Who's bringing what?”

She looked at me as if I had asked something unreasonable.

“I thought you would take care of the main meal.”

“Why?”

“Because it's your house.”

I waited a moment.

Then I said, “That explains where you thought we'd have Christmas. It doesn't explain why I should pay for the entire meal.”

She pressed her lips together.

Colin looked down at the table.

I could see him trying to find the quickest way out of the discomfort.

He had always been that way.

When he was a boy, he would come to me after an argument with another child and ask whether I could fix it.

Sometimes I could.

Sometimes he needed to learn how to face it himself.

I wondered whether I had made things harder for him by solving too many problems before he had to.

“Here's what I'm willing to do,” I said.

Both of them looked up.

“I'll consider hosting Christmas here. I'm offering to help, not to give you an unlimited amount of money.”

Colin looked at me.

“Can we work out the budget together?”

“Yes.”

That was the first useful question anyone had asked all evening.

I turned the list around so we could all see it.

We went through the items one by one.

Some things were simple.

The extra chairs could be borrowed from Colin's neighbors, who had offered them for previous gatherings.

Several relatives could bring desserts.

Another family member could bring drinks.

Vanessa had already planned a large main dish, but she was willing to ask two relatives to contribute side dishes.

The list began to look less like a bill with my name at the bottom and more like a plan shared by several people.

It was a small change.

But it mattered.

When we reached the amount for groceries, I told them I would contribute a fixed sum toward the meal.

Vanessa frowned.

“That's less than I expected.”

“I understand.”

“It's going to be difficult to stay within that.”

“Then we may need to change the menu.”

She stared at me.

I waited.

For once, I did not offer to cover the difference.

Colin eventually said, “We can ask people to bring more food.”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“That's not what we told them.”

“Then we can tell them the arrangements have changed.”

She looked hurt.

I felt sorry for her, but I also noticed that Colin had finally offered a solution without asking me to pay for it.

That was progress, even if nobody wanted to call it that.

We wrote down the tasks.

I would provide the house and a contribution toward the main meal.

Colin would arrange the extra chairs and help move the dining room furniture.

Vanessa would coordinate the food list, but the relatives would be asked to bring specific items.

We would discuss any additional expense before it was made.

Nothing about the plan was extraordinary.

It was the sort of conversation I should have insisted on from the beginning.

When we finished, Vanessa gathered the papers.

“So that's it?” she asked.

“That's the plan for now.”

“And the card?”

I looked at her.

“The card won't be renewed.”

She let out a short breath.

“Even after tonight?”

“Especially after tonight.
