7 – The Christmas Decorations Stayed in Their Box While I Waited for Someone to Ask Instead of Assuming I Would Provide Everything

The next morning, I woke to a message from Colin.

He said Vanessa was working on a list of expenses for Christmas.

I read it while standing beside the kitchen counter.

For a moment, I felt relieved.

Perhaps we were finally moving toward a conversation instead of another argument.

I replied that I would look at the list when it was ready.

Then I made breakfast.

I didn't call Vanessa to ask whether she had finished.

I didn't offer to go shopping.

I didn't start calculating how much food thirty people might eat.

I waited.

That was harder than it sounds.

I had spent years treating every unfinished plan as something I needed to complete.

If someone mentioned an upcoming expense, I began thinking about how to cover it.

If a family gathering needed preparation, I found myself organizing it before anyone had asked.

I had become so accustomed to being useful that doing nothing felt irresponsible.

But I was trying to learn the difference between refusing to help and refusing to take over.

Those were not the same thing.

I spent the morning doing small jobs around the house.

I changed a lightbulb in the hallway.

I sorted a stack of papers.

I swept the kitchen floor.

Then I went outside and cleared a few fallen branches from beneath the maple tree.

The work gave me something simple to concentrate on.

The branches were dry and brittle.

I gathered them into a pile and carried them toward the yard waste bin.

When I returned inside, the phone was ringing.

Vanessa.

I wiped my hands and answered.

“Hello?”

“I've been trying to work out the Christmas expenses.”

“All right.”

“It isn't as simple as you think.”

“I never said it was.”

She sounded frustrated.

“We have to buy enough food for everyone, and there are decorations, drinks, and other things.”

“I understand.”

“And we need to know how much you're willing to contribute.”

I leaned against the counter.

“Have you finished the list?”

“Not completely.”

“Then finish it, and we can talk about it.”

She went quiet.

I could almost hear her deciding whether to argue.

Finally, she said, “You used to make this much easier.”

I looked at the kitchen table.

The notebook was in the drawer beneath it.

“I used to agree before I knew what I was agreeing to,” I said.

“That isn't fair.”

“Perhaps not.”

I didn't say it sarcastically.

I meant that I understood she might see the situation differently.

For a long time, I had viewed every disagreement as a contest in which one person had to be right and the other had to be wrong.

Now I was trying to accept that two people could remember the same arrangement differently.

But the fact that Vanessa believed I had agreed to something didn't mean I had to keep pretending I had.

She asked whether I was still upset about the card.

“No,” I said. “The decision has been made.”

“So you're just going to leave us without it?”

“You can use your own card or another way to pay.”

She didn't answer.

I felt sorry for her.

I knew that changing a familiar arrangement could be difficult.

But sympathy didn't require me to reverse my decision.

“I'll look at the Christmas list when you have it,” I said.

She told me she would send it later.

Then the call ended.

I stood in the kitchen for a moment.

The conversation had not been pleasant.

Still, it hadn't turned into a fight.

That mattered.

I made another cup of coffee and sat beside the window.

Outside, the maple tree stood against the winter sky.

I thought about how long it had taken to grow.

Diane had watered it during dry summers.

I had trimmed the branches when they began reaching too far over the fence.

We had both cared for it, but we hadn't tried to force it to grow faster.

Some things needed time.

Perhaps learning to deal with my family differently would take time, too.

That afternoon, I opened the garage again and looked at the Christmas decorations.

I took out the box and placed it on the workbench.

The small wooden star was near the top.

I lifted it carefully.

The repaired edge was still visible, and the glue had yellowed with age.

I remembered Colin asking why his mother had kept something that was broken.

Diane had told him that not everything imperfect needed to be thrown away.

I had thought about that conversation many times since she died.

I didn't want to throw away the relationship I had with my son.

I didn't want to turn a disagreement over money into a reason to shut the door on my family.

But keeping a relationship did not mean pretending that nothing needed to change.

I placed the star back in the box.

Then I put the decorations away again.

I wasn't ready to bring them into the house until I knew what Christmas would look like.

The following day, Colin stopped by briefly.

He had come to collect something he had left in the garage.

As he stood near the workbench, he noticed the box of decorations.

“Are you putting those up soon?” he asked.

“I haven't decided.”

He looked surprised.

“Christmas is getting close.”

“I know.”

He picked up a string of lights and examined the plug.

“Vanessa thought you might start decorating this weekend.”

I took the lights from him and placed them back in the box.

“I haven't agreed to host the gathering yet.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I know.”

For the first time, he said it without arguing.

We stood quietly for a moment.

Then he asked whether I wanted him to help with anything around the house.

The question caught me off guard.

He had helped me with small jobs before, but usually after I had asked.

This time, he was offering.

I looked at him.

“Not today, thank you.”

He nodded.

We went inside for a few minutes.

I made him coffee, and we talked about the children.

He told me about something funny one of them had said at dinner.

I laughed.

For a little while, we were simply father and son.

There was no discussion about the card.

No argument about Christmas.

No request for money.

I realized how much I had missed conversations like that.

When Colin left, I stood at the window and watched his car disappear down the street.

I wanted more moments like that.

I wanted him to visit because he wanted to see me, not because he needed me to solve something.

Perhaps that was an unfair distinction.

Families helped each other.

I knew that.

But I wanted the help to exist alongside affection, not replace it.

That evening, Vanessa sent the list.

It contained several categories of expenses for the gathering.

I read through it carefully.

There were food items, drinks, and other things she believed would be needed for thirty guests.

I didn't immediately agree to pay for them.

I also didn't reject the list simply because I disliked how the plans had begun.

I wanted to consider it honestly.

I set the phone on the table and read the list again.

Then I wrote down a few questions.

Which items were essential?

Which expenses were connected to the gathering itself?

Which things had already been purchased?

I wasn't trying to make the holiday miserable.

I wanted to understand what I was being asked to support.

I sent Vanessa a message saying I had received the list and needed time to review it.

Her reply was brief.

She said she hoped I wouldn't make this harder than necessary.

I didn't answer.

I put the phone away and went to bed.

The list remained on the table the following morning.

I looked at it while making coffee.

For the first time, I was approaching a family expense as a decision to consider rather than a demand to satisfy.

I could still choose to help.

I could choose not to.

But I would make that choice with my eyes open.

That was the change I had been trying to make.

And I intended to keep making it.

<a
