5 – I Had Spent Years Making Christmas Easy for Everyone Else, Until I Realized Nobody Had Asked What I Wanted From My Own Holiday

The next few days passed without much changing.

I went through my usual routines, made my meals, and kept the house tidy.

But I no longer looked at every quiet moment as an opportunity to prepare for someone else's needs.

The difference was small.

I noticed it anyway.

My phone remained beside the kitchen counter, and every time it lit up, I felt the familiar urge to answer immediately.

I had trained myself to believe that a delayed response was a kind of failure.

If Colin needed something, I should be available.

If Vanessa had a question, I should answer.

If a bill had to be paid, I should take care of it before anyone became worried.

I was beginning to understand how exhausting that expectation had become, even when nobody was standing in front of me.

One morning, I opened the refrigerator and found the leftover food from the previous evening.

I had prepared enough for two people out of habit.

For years, I had cooked extra because Colin and the children sometimes stopped by unexpectedly.

I didn't mind feeding them.

I enjoyed it.

But I had started planning my meals around the possibility that someone might arrive, even when nobody had said they were coming.

I put the leftovers into a container and placed it on the middle shelf.

Then I made myself breakfast.

Just enough for one.

It felt strangely deliberate.

That afternoon, I received a message from Vanessa asking whether I had decided how much I would contribute toward Christmas.

I read it while sitting at the kitchen table.

I didn't answer immediately.

Instead, I finished the tea in my cup and looked out at the backyard.

The maple tree stood near the fence, bare branches reaching into the pale afternoon sky.

I thought about the Christmas gatherings Diane and I had hosted when Colin was young.

We had never expected one person to pay for everything simply because that person owned the house.

We discussed what we could afford.

We shared what we had.

Sometimes we cooked more than we needed, and sometimes we kept the meal simple.

Nobody treated a large gathering as proof of how much we loved each other.

I picked up my phone.

I told Vanessa I hadn't agreed to a contribution because we still needed to discuss the arrangements.

Her reply came a few minutes later.

She said the family needed to know what to expect.

I understood that.

I also believed the family deserved to know what had actually been agreed upon, rather than what someone had assumed.

I put the phone down without sending another message.

The following morning, Colin called while I was making coffee.

He sounded tired.

“Have you and Vanessa worked things out?”

“No,” I said. “We haven't finished talking.”

He paused.

“She thinks you're angry with her.”

I looked at the coffee dripping into my mug.

“I'm not trying to punish her, Colin.”

“Then why won't you just help with Christmas?”

I set the coffee pot down.

“Because nobody asked me whether I wanted to host thirty people before the plans were made.”

“She thought you'd be happy to have everyone here.”

“Perhaps she should have asked.”

He didn't answer.

I could hear the television playing faintly in the background on his end of the call.

I wondered whether he was standing in the kitchen of his own house, hoping the conversation would end before it became uncomfortable.

“Dad, it's Christmas,” he said again.

“I know.”

“Everyone is looking forward to it.”

“I hope they have a good holiday.”

He sighed.

“You make it sound like you don't want us there.”

That hurt.

I had to remind myself not to answer from the hurt alone.

“I want to see you and the children,” I said. “That doesn't mean every arrangement is automatically acceptable.”

He remained silent.

I waited for him to say something that showed he understood.

He didn't.

Eventually, he said he needed to go.

We ended the call politely.

I sat at the table and stared into my coffee.

I had spent years trying to make sure Colin never felt unwanted.

Now I was discovering that he could interpret a boundary as rejection.

I didn't know how to change that overnight.

I only knew I couldn't spend the rest of my life saying yes to prevent him from feeling disappointed.

That evening, I walked through the living room and stopped beside the photographs.

Diane's picture was near the center of the shelf.

She was smiling in it, her hand resting on Colin's shoulder.

I remembered how she used to ask him to help with small jobs around the house.

He would complain at first, especially when he wanted to go outside with his friends.

She never argued for long.

She would simply tell him that being part of a family meant contributing, not just enjoying what others did.

I had always admired that about her.

After she died, I tried to fill the space she had left behind.

Perhaps I had done too much.

Perhaps I had been so afraid that Colin would feel the loss of his mother more deeply that I had tried to remove every other difficulty from his life.

I couldn't undo those years.

But I could stop making the same mistake.

I returned to the kitchen and opened the drawer where I kept the notebook.

The list of expenses was still there.

I read through it slowly.

I didn't add anything.

I didn't calculate a grand total.

Instead, I closed the notebook and placed it back in the drawer.

I wasn't interested in turning my family into a set of numbers.

I wanted to remember that my money, time, and home were parts of my life, too.

They were not an unlimited supply that everyone else could draw from without asking.

The next day, Vanessa called.

I answered because I was ready to speak with her.

She began by saying that Christmas preparations were becoming difficult.

I let her finish.

Then I asked what she wanted to discuss.

“The food,” she said. “We need to know what we're working with.”

“Have you made a list of what you intend to buy?”

“Not yet.”

“Then perhaps we should start there.”

She sounded irritated.

“I thought we had already agreed to this.”

“We agreed that we would discuss Christmas.”

“That's not how I remember it.”

I rubbed my thumb against the edge of the counter.

I wanted to argue.

I wanted to tell her that I remembered the conversation very clearly.

But arguing about who remembered what would not solve the problem.

“I haven't agreed to pay for the entire gathering,” I said.

She was quiet.

Then she asked whether I was going to make her tell her family that Christmas was canceled.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“I haven't canceled anything.”

“Then what am I supposed to tell them?”

“The truth. We haven't settled the arrangements yet.”

She exhaled sharply.

“You know how much effort goes into organizing something like this.”

“I do.”

“And now you're making me look foolish.”

I closed my eyes for a moment.

That was the part I had always tried to prevent.

I had wanted to spare Vanessa embarrassment.

I had wanted to spare Colin conflict.

I had wanted everyone to be comfortable.

But nobody could promise that a family gathering would be free of disappointment.

And it wasn't my responsibility to prevent every uncomfortable feeling by spending money.

“I don't want you to feel embarrassed,” I said. “But I can't agree to things simply because plans have already been announced.”

She didn't answer.

I waited.

After a moment, she said she would speak to Colin.

I told her that was fine.

When the call ended, I remained at the counter.

I was disappointed that the conversation had gone nowhere.

Still, I noticed something important.

I hadn't raised my voice.

I hadn't insulted her.

I hadn't withdrawn my love or threatened to keep the children away.

I had simply explained what I was willing to agree to.

That was all.

For years, I had treated disagreement as though it were a disaster waiting to happen.

Now I was beginning to see that a disagreement could remain a disagreement without becoming the end of a relationship.

It was uncomfortable.

But it was manageable.

That evening, I made dinner and ate beside the window.

The backyard was dark, and the maple tree was only a shape against the night.

I thought about Diane again.

If she had been sitting across from me, I knew she would have asked whether I was finally going to stand up for myself.

I might have told her I was trying.

She probably would have smiled and said that trying was a start.

I finished my meal.

Then I washed my plate, dried it, and put it away.

The house was still mine.

I wanted to remember that before Christmas arrived.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: Colin Wanted Me to Keep the Peace, but I Was Finally Learning That Peace Bought With My Silence Was Never Really Peace

The next few days passed without much changing.
