I asked.

She shook her head.

That surprised me.

"Would you rather get in the car?"

Another shake.

I studied her face.

"Then what do you want to do?"

She looked at the mirror again.

I followed her gaze.

The glass seemed ordinary, almost forgettable.

A person could walk past it a hundred times without wondering why it was there.

I had passed it myself without noticing it.

Now I couldn't stop looking.

I tried to see the reflection the way Sophie might have seen it.

The angle was awkward.

The glass caught part of the street behind us, along with pieces of the buildings and the people moving through the afternoon light.

Depending on where someone stood, the reflection changed.

A person could appear close when they were actually several steps away.

A passing car could seem to move in the opposite direction.

A familiar face could look strange for a second before the mind corrected the image.

Perhaps Sophie had noticed something like that.

Perhaps a stranger had appeared in the glass.

Perhaps she had mistaken one person for another.

I could think of a dozen explanations.

None of them felt convincing.

I crouched again.

"Can you show me?"

She raised her hand, then hesitated.

I waited for her to point.

Her fingers remained curled against her palm.

I didn't force her.

I had spent too much of my life demanding answers from people who were afraid to give them.

I wasn't going to make my daughter feel that she had to speak just because I wanted to understand.

"It's okay," I told her.

She watched me carefully.

Then she glanced toward the mirror one more time.

The afternoon sun shifted behind a passing cloud, changing the brightness of the glass.

For an instant, the reflection seemed darker.

I blinked.

The light returned.

Nothing had changed.

Still, I felt a tightening in my chest that I couldn't explain.

I straightened and looked at the people around us.

The woman on the phone had moved farther down the block.

The elderly couple had disappeared into a store.

The two men with shopping bags were crossing toward the opposite side of the street.

Everyone had somewhere to go.

Everyone seemed occupied with their own afternoon.

I wondered whether that was what made the moment so unsettling.

If something was wrong, no one else appeared to know.

I had always preferred rooms where I understood the balance of power.

A private office.

A guarded entrance.

A table with everyone seated where I expected them to be.

On a sidewalk, I couldn't control the movement around me.

I couldn't tell every stranger to stop walking while I studied their faces.

I couldn't know what someone had noticed or what they had decided to ignore.

I had built an empire around the idea that uncertainty could be reduced through preparation.

But a crowded street had reminded me that there were limits to what preparation could accomplish.

Sophie shifted closer to my leg.

I felt the movement before I saw it.

She was looking at the mirror again.

I followed her gaze.

A man passed in front of the glass.

His reflection moved across its surface and vanished beyond the frame.

Another pedestrian followed.

Then another.

I tried to focus on each reflected face.

I didn't recognize anyone.

That should have reassured me.

It didn't.

I looked at Sophie.

"Is someone there?"

She didn't answer.

I felt the first real edge of frustration.

Not with her.

With myself.

I could command men who had committed terrible acts without letting my voice shake.

I could sit across from someone who wanted to take everything I owned and make him understand that the meeting was already over.

Yet I couldn't find a way to ask my five-year-old daughter a simple question without feeling as though I might frighten her further.

I took a slow breath.

"We can leave whenever you want."

She nodded faintly.

For a moment, I thought she was ready to move.

Then she turned toward the glass one last time.

I watched her eyes travel across the reflection.

Something about the way she looked at it made me feel that she wasn't simply seeing a mirror.

She was trying to understand something.

Something she had noticed before I did.

I followed her gaze until my attention settled on the glass itself.

I saw the same sidewalk.

The same buildings.

The same people moving through the afternoon.

I saw my own broad shoulders and the brown fabric of my suit.

I saw the dark markings at my collar.

And I saw Sophie beside me, her small figure standing close enough that our reflections almost touched.

For a second, the image looked like a picture of the life I had spent years trying to protect.

A father.

A daughter.

A bright afternoon.

A black car waiting nearby.

I wanted to believe that was all it was.

I wanted the mirror to remain a piece of glass.

I wanted my daughter to take my hand and ask for ice cream.

Instead, she turned away from the storefront and looked up at me with an expression that made my stomach tighten.

I had never seen her look at the world that way.

And I couldn't tell whether she was frightened by something in the mirror or by something she had begun to understand about me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: I Had Spent Years Watching Everyone Around Me, but I Had Never Learned What My Own Child Noticed First

I asked Sophie to tell me what she had seen.
