We don't eat out as much, and we postponed buying a new television."

"Did the old one stop working?"

"No. We just wanted a bigger one."

"Then I suppose the old one can continue doing its job."

He smiled.

"That's what Vanessa said."

I took a spoonful of soup.

He went on to explain that they had started putting a small amount into savings each month.

It wasn't much.

Some months, unexpected expenses made it difficult.

But they were trying to build a cushion instead of assuming that someone else would cover the difference.

"I wish we'd done it sooner," he said.

"Most people wish they had done something sooner."

"Are you still upset with me?"

I looked at him.

"Sometimes I think about how things got this way. But being upset isn't the same as wanting to punish you."

He studied his hands.

"I let you take care of things because it was easier."

"Yes."

"I told myself you liked helping us."

"Sometimes I did."

"I should've asked more often."

"Yes, you should have."

He looked up, perhaps surprised that I hadn't softened the answer.

I didn't say it to hurt him.

I said it because I wanted our conversations to be honest.

"I should also have been clearer," I continued. "I kept saying yes when I was already tired of saying yes. Then I expected you to understand what I hadn't told you."

"We both made it easier to avoid the conversation."

"We did."

He leaned back against the booth.

"I don't want the kids to think family means somebody always has to rescue everybody else."

"Then show them what it means."

"How?"

"Let them see you make a plan. Let them see you work through a problem. And let them see you ask for help when you genuinely need it, without expecting the answer to be yes."

He nodded slowly.

"I can do that."

After lunch, we walked to the parking lot together.

He hugged me before getting into his car.

It wasn't a long embrace.

It didn't have to be.

"Thanks for lunch, Dad."

"You're welcome."

He hesitated.

"Can I ask you something else?"

"Go ahead."

"Would you mind if we came over next Sunday? The kids want to help you plant flowers."

I looked toward the street.

"What kind of flowers?"

"They haven't decided. They saw some pictures at school."

"Then tell them to bring the pictures."

He smiled.

"We'll see you Sunday."

That Sunday, the children arrived with a handful of printed pictures and more enthusiasm than knowledge.

One wanted yellow flowers.

The other wanted purple ones.

Vanessa had brought gardening gloves for herself and the children.

Colin carried a small bag of soil.

I brought out the gloves I had bought myself after Christmas.

They fit better than the old pair I had been using for years.

We spent the morning deciding where to plant everything.

The children wanted to put all the flowers beside the maple tree.

I explained that we needed to leave room around the trunk.

They weren't pleased.

Then I showed them the flower bed along the fence.

They agreed that it could hold both colors.

Vanessa knelt beside the soil and helped them space the plants.

Colin carried water from the hose.

I stood back for a moment and watched them working.

No one asked me to pay for a new patio.

Nobody announced that the entire family would be coming over for a barbecue.

Nobody assumed that the garden belonged to them.

We were simply doing something together.

At lunchtime, we went inside and ate sandwiches.

The children talked about the flowers they hoped would bloom first.

Vanessa asked whether I wanted them to bring anything for our next visit.

I told her we could decide when we knew what we were planning.

She smiled.

"Fair enough."

That afternoon, after they left, I walked out to the garden again.

The flowers were small and the soil looked dark against the grass.

I knew they would need watering.

I knew some might not survive.

That was how gardening worked.

You prepared the ground, gave things what they needed, and accepted that you couldn't control every result.

I had spent years trying to control the comfort of everyone around me.

I had tried to prevent disappointment by paying bills, arranging meals, and smoothing over every difficulty.

I had mistaken the absence of complaints for the presence of peace.

Now I was learning to leave room for other people to make their own choices.

That evening, Margaret called.

She asked whether I wanted to visit her the following weekend.

"I'd like that," I told her.

"Good. I was beginning to think you had forgotten you had a sister."

"I haven't forgotten."

"You've just been busy being everybody's emergency contact."

I laughed.

"That may be true."

She softened her voice.

"I was glad you asked me to Christmas dinner."

"I'm glad you came."

"You looked more relaxed than I've seen you in years."

"I felt more relaxed."

"Then keep doing whatever you did differently."

I glanced at the gardening gloves resting near the back door.

"I think I'm learning."

After we hung up, I sat at the kitchen table with a cup of tea.

The budget sheet was still in the drawer.

The blue mug was still on the shelf.

The wooden star was safely packed away until the next Christmas.

None of those things had changed the family by themselves.

What had changed was the way we spoke to one another.

I no longer had to guess what people expected from me.

And they no longer had to guess where I stood.

There was something reassuring about that.

Outside, the maple tree moved gently in the evening breeze.

Its branches were beginning to show tiny buds.

I stood by the window and watched them for a while.

Spring had arrived quietly.

I hadn't needed to force it.

*END PART 19**

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: WHAT I WANTED ALL ALONG

Winter passed without any dramatic announcement.
