I'm glad you worked it out.*

Colin called a few minutes later.

"Did you get the details?"

"I did."

"We wanted to make sure you're comfortable with everything."

"I am."

"We're going to have to keep the food simple."

"Good."

He laughed.

"I knew you'd say that."

"I like simple."

"Vanessa wants to make sure there's enough for everybody."

"Then she should make a list and ask people to bring what they can."

"That's what we're doing."

I could hear him moving around in the background.

He was probably standing in the kitchen, looking at the budget he had shown me.

"How are you feeling about it?" I asked.

"Relieved, actually."

"Why?"

"Because we have a plan now. We know where we're going, what we're bringing, and what we can spend."

"That makes things easier."

"It does."

He hesitated.

"Vanessa's mother was still disappointed, but she offered to help. I think she realized it was too much to put on you."

"That was kind of her."

"She also said she could bring extra chairs if we need them."

"Good."

We talked about the children for a few minutes.

The older one had asked whether she could help set the table at my house.

The younger one wanted to know whether we would have the same cookies as last year.

I told Colin that we could make them together.

Then he said something that stayed with me after we hung up.

"Thanks for not making this about who was right."

I leaned back in my chair.

"I had to learn that the hard way."

"What do you mean?"

"I could spend the next month proving that I was right to be upset. But that wouldn't give us a better Christmas."

"You're right."

"What matters is whether we can do things differently."

He was quiet.

Then he said, "I want to do that."

"I know."

After the call, I took out my notepad.

The guest list had changed several times.

I crossed out the old numbers and wrote down the people who would come to my house for dinner.

Colin.

Vanessa.

The children.

Margaret.

Me.

Six people.

I looked at the list and felt a kind of relief I had not expected.

Six people could sit comfortably around my table.

Six people could share a meal without anyone having to balance a plate on their knees.

Six people could talk without the room becoming so loud that I could not hear the person beside me.

I had once believed that a full house was the clearest proof of a successful Christmas.

Now I wondered whether I had been confusing noise with closeness.

The following afternoon, Margaret came over to help me plan the meal.

She brought a small notebook and a bag of apples.

"I figured we'd need something for dessert," she said.

"I was going to make the apple pie Diane used to make."

"Then I'll peel the apples."

We sat at the kitchen table and worked out the menu.

Roast chicken instead of a large turkey.

Roasted potatoes.

Green beans.

A simple salad.

Apple pie.

There would be enough food for everyone without leaving me with several days of leftovers.

Margaret looked at the list.

"That sounds lovely."

"I hope so."

"You know, you don't have to make Christmas perfect."

I looked up.

"Everyone seems to be telling me that lately."

"Maybe you've needed to hear it."

I smiled.

"Perhaps."

She put down her pen.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"Have you been paying for more than you can afford?"

I considered the question.

"I haven't been in danger of losing the house or anything like that. But I have been putting other things off because I thought I might need the money for Colin."

"What sort of things?"

"Small repairs. Things for the house. A few things I wanted to do for myself."

"Why didn't you tell him?"

"Because I didn't want him to feel guilty."

Margaret shook her head gently.

"You're always trying to protect everyone from feeling bad."

I looked at her.

"Your husband used to say that about me too."

"He wasn't wrong."

We both laughed.

Then she reached across the table and touched my hand.

"You can help your son without making yourself responsible for everything that happens to him."

I looked down at our hands.

"I know that now."

"Do you?"

I thought about the card.

The bills.

The Christmas shopping.

The way I had answered every request before asking myself whether I could comfortably afford it.

"I'm trying to learn it."

She nodded.

"That's enough for now."

We finished the menu and went to the kitchen.

Margaret opened the cupboard where I kept the baking dishes.

She found the pie plate Diane had used for years.

The edge was chipped in one place.

"You still have this."

"I couldn't throw it away."

"Good. It's a perfectly good pie plate."

She washed it and placed it on the counter.

I watched her for a moment.

There was something comforting about having my sister in the kitchen.

She knew where the cups belonged.

She knew which drawer held the knives.

She did not need me to explain the history of every object.

We had grown up together.

We had spent years sharing meals, holidays, and ordinary afternoons.

Then our lives had become busy, and I had allowed the distance between us to grow without ever deciding that I wanted it.

That evening, I called her after she had gone home.

"I enjoyed today," I said.

"Me too."

"We should do it more often."

"Then call me."

"I will."

I meant it.

On Wednesday, Vanessa sent me a message asking whether I wanted her to bring anything for our smaller dinner.

I told her she could bring a side dish if she wished.

She asked what I was making.

I sent her the menu.

She offered to bring the salad.

I accepted.

She did not ask me to cover the cost.

I did not feel the need to mention the card.

We were learning to let ordinary exchanges remain ordinary.

Later that day, Colin came by after work.

He looked at the Christmas tree and smiled.

"The kids are still talking about it."

"They did a good job."

"They want to come over again before Christmas."

"Of course."

He sat at the kitchen table while I made coffee.

"There's something else I wanted to tell you."

I handed him a cup.

"Go ahead."

"We've decided to take the card out of our regular spending."

I sat opposite him.

"All right."

"We'll use our own accounts for household expenses. If we need help with something, we'll ask you first."

"That sounds sensible."

"I also wanted to say that we appreciate what you've done for us."

I looked at him.

He seemed uncomfortable, as if he had prepared the words in the car and was now trying to remember them.

"I know we've relied on you a lot," he continued. "I don't want you to think we don't appreciate it."

"I appreciate you saying that."

"And I don't want you to feel you have to keep doing it."

"Good."

He smiled faintly.

"You're not going to make this sentimental, are you?"

"I wasn't planning to."

"Good. Because I'm not very good at these conversations."

"Neither am I."

That made him laugh.

We sat quietly for a while, drinking coffee.

Then he asked whether I needed help moving the dining table to make more room for Christmas dinner.

I told him I could manage it, but I would appreciate the help.

He stood up immediately.

We moved the table a few inches away from the wall and shifted the chairs.

It was a small job.

It took less than ten minutes.

When we finished, he stepped back and looked at the room.

"There," he said. "More room."

"Not for thirty-one people."

"No," he agreed. "Definitely not for thirty-one people."

We laughed together.

The laughter did not erase what had happened.

It did not mean the past three years had suddenly become simple.

But it reminded me that we could talk about a difficult subject without turning each other into enemies.

After Colin left, I placed the budget paper he had given me into a drawer.

I did not need to keep it to monitor him.

I kept it because it marked the moment he had begun looking honestly at his own responsibilities.

Then I took out Diane's recipe card for apple pie.

The handwriting had faded slightly around the edges.

I read the ingredients and set the card on the counter.

Christmas was still several days away.

There were meals to prepare and gifts to wrap.

There were family members who might still be disappointed.

But nobody was pretending the money would stretch further than it could.

Nobody was pretending my house could hold more people than it could.

And nobody was expecting me to solve every problem before anyone else had to think about it.

For the first time in a long while, the holiday felt manageable.

Not perfect.

Manageable.

I was beginning to understand that those were not the same thing.

*END PART 15**

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: When Christmas Finally Arrived, I Wanted to Remember the People at My Table More Than the Things I Had Paid For

By Monday evening, the community room had been reserved.
