she said.

"Good."

Colin carried in the last box.

I had moved the decorations into the living room that morning.

The tree was still folded up in its storage bag, but the stand was ready, and I had cleared enough space near the window.

The children immediately began pulling ornaments from the box.

"Careful," I said when the younger one reached for a glass ball.

He withdrew his hand.

"Can I have this one?"

He held up a wooden reindeer with one crooked antler.

"That one is fine."

The older child found a small paper angel she had made at school.

Its wings were bent, and the glitter had mostly fallen away.

"Can we put this near the top?"

"We can put it wherever you want."

She looked pleased.

Vanessa stood beside the sofa, watching them.

For a moment, she looked as if she wanted to help.

Then she asked me, "Would you like me to put the tree together?"

"That would be helpful."

She rolled up her sleeves and joined me.

We opened the branches one by one.

The children sorted ornaments into piles on the rug.

The younger one placed all the wooden decorations together.

The older one organized the glass ornaments by size.

Neither arrangement lasted very long.

Soon they were passing things back and forth and arguing over which ornament belonged where.

I found myself laughing.

The sound surprised me.

It had been a while since I had laughed in my own living room without thinking about the next thing that needed to be done.

When the tree was standing, I plugged in the lights.

Half of them came on immediately.

The other half stayed dark.

"Oh, no," the older child said.

"It's all right," I told her. "We have another set."

I went to the cupboard and brought out a spare string of lights.

Diane had always kept extra lights in a separate box because she hated discovering a dead bulb when the tree was almost finished.

I unwound the old string and checked each section.

The children watched from the rug.

"Why do you have so many lights?" the younger one asked.

"Because sometimes lights stop working."

"Why don't you just buy new ones?"

"Because these still work."

He seemed to consider that a perfectly sensible answer.

Then he returned to his ornaments.

We finished the lights and began decorating.

I let the children choose where the wooden reindeer should go.

I helped the older one hang her paper angel.

Vanessa placed a few ornaments on the lower branches.

Colin stood on a small step stool to reach the top.

When he asked for the wooden star, I brought it from the kitchen.

He held it carefully.

"I remember making this," he said.

"You were seven."

"I thought it was red."

"It was supposed to be red."

He laughed.

"Mom said it looked like a sunset."

"Your mother was trying to be kind."

He turned the star over.

The chipped paint was still visible on the back.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he climbed down and handed the star to the older child.

"Would you like to help me put this on top?"

She nodded eagerly.

I steadied the stool while Colin lifted her.

She placed the star over the top branch.

It leaned slightly to one side.

"Is it straight?" she asked.

"Almost," Colin said.

I adjusted the branch beneath it.

"There."

The star stood upright.

The children clapped.

Vanessa smiled at them.

"Your grandmother would have loved that."

The words were quiet, but I heard them.

I looked at the tree.

Diane's old decorations were scattered across the branches.

Some were worn.

Some were homemade.

One of the glass balls had a small crack near its cap.

But the tree looked like our tree.

Not a display from a store window.

Not a photograph arranged for other people to admire.

A tree that belonged to the family who had decorated it.

When we finished, the children sat on the rug and looked at their work.

The younger one pointed toward the wooden star.

"Grandpa, did Grandma make that?"

"Your dad made it with her."

He turned toward Colin.

"Did you make it?"

"I did."

"Can I make one next year?"

Colin looked at me.

I smiled.

"Of course."

The child seemed satisfied.

Then he asked whether we could make cookies.

I told him we could make them the following weekend if his parents agreed.

Vanessa said that would be fine.

She even offered to bring the ingredients.

It was a small exchange, but I noticed the difference.

She offered.

I did not automatically assume I would pay.

We were beginning to speak to each other again instead of silently assigning responsibilities.

After the children had eaten their snacks, Colin helped them put on their jackets.

Vanessa stayed behind while he carried the backpacks to the car.

"Can I talk to you for a minute?" she asked.

"Of course."

She looked at the tree.

"I've been thinking about what you said. About how every conversation had started becoming a request."

I waited.

"I didn't realize how often I did it."

"I don't think you were counting."

"No, I wasn't."

She folded her arms, then let them fall to her sides.

"I think I got used to the way things worked. If we needed something, Colin would say we should ask you. If you agreed, we moved on. We didn't really stop to think about whether it was fair."

I nodded.

"That can happen."

"I also think I treated your house like an extension of ours."

I looked at her.

She met my eyes.

"Not because I thought it belonged to me," she added. "I just felt so comfortable here that I stopped thinking about the fact that it was your home."

That was the first time she had said anything that came close to understanding what had hurt me.

I did not need her to use perfect words.

I needed her to see the difference between being welcome and being entitled.

"I want you to feel comfortable here," I said. "I want the children to feel that this is their home away from home. But I also need to be able to decide what happens in it."

"I understand that now."

"Good."

She looked at the tree again.

"I don't want things to stay awkward between us."

"Neither do I."

"I know I can't fix everything with one conversation."

"No," I said. "You can't."

She nodded.

"But we can start doing things differently."

"That's all I'm asking."

Colin returned to the doorway.

"Ready?"

Vanessa picked up her handbag.

"Yes."

The children shouted goodbye from the car.

I waved until they were safely buckled in.

When I returned to the living room, the lights were glowing softly against the window.

The wooden star leaned a little to the left again.

I could have adjusted it.

Instead, I sat on the sofa and looked at it.

Diane would have noticed the angle immediately.

She would have stood on the stool herself and straightened it.

Then she would have stepped back, tilted her head, and asked whether I thought it looked better.

I would have said yes.

She would have known I was only half paying attention.

I smiled at the memory.

The house was quiet after the children left, but it was no longer the kind of quiet that made me feel I needed to fill every empty space.

The tree had done enough.

So had we.

*END PART 14**

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: We Finally Agreed on Christmas, and Nobody Had to Pretend That the Money Would Stretch Further Than It Could

The children came over on Saturday afternoon.
