I just don't want you falling."

He had looked at me for help.

I had told him to listen to his mother.

The memory made me smile.

Then I placed the star on the table beside the box.

I did not want to spend the entire morning remembering what was gone.

I wanted to decide what could still be shared.

I carried the decorations into the living room and set the box near the tree stand.

The tree itself was artificial, with branches that had to be opened one by one.

It was not as beautiful as a fresh tree, but it had lasted for years.

Diane had liked the fact that we could put it up without worrying about needles on the carpet.

I pulled the tree stand from the closet.

Then I stopped.

There was no reason to finish everything before the Christmas plan had been settled.

I put the stand back.

I had spent too many years rushing to make things ready before anybody had asked whether I wanted to do them.

This time, I would wait until I knew what we were preparing for.

Later that morning, my sister called.

Her name was Margaret.

She had a way of getting straight to the point without making it sound like an accusation.

"Have you decided what you're doing for Christmas?" she asked.

"Not completely."

"Colin mentioned there might be a big gathering at your house."

I looked toward the Christmas boxes.

"That was the original idea."

"Thirty people?"

"Thirty-one, apparently."

She laughed once.

"I thought you were planning a family meal, not opening a restaurant."

"That's about how it feels."

"Do you want me to bring anything?"

I appreciated the offer.

"We're still working out the guest list."

"All right. Just tell me what you need."

I hesitated.

Then I said, "I'd like you to come, whatever we decide."

There was a pause on the other end.

"You haven't asked me in a while."

The words were gentle.

That made them harder to hear.

"I know."

"I figured you had enough going on with Colin and the children."

"I always have room for you."

"Do you?"

I looked around the quiet kitchen.

The empty chairs.

The folded budget.

The notepad with its lists and figures.

I had told myself that I was keeping busy for the family.

I had not noticed how often I had left other people waiting for a place in my life.

"I want to make room," I said. "I should have said that sooner."

Margaret was quiet for a moment.

Then she said, "I'd like to come."

"Good."

"Even if it's just you, me, Colin, and the children."

"Especially then."

We agreed that I would call her once the plan was final.

After we hung up, I wrote her name on the notepad.

I placed it near the top of the list.

For the first time, I was not simply counting how many people Vanessa wanted to bring.

I was counting the people I wanted to see.

That afternoon, Colin sent me a message.

Vanessa and I talked again. We think the smaller gathering might be best, but she wants to call her mother first.*

I replied that I understood.

Then I put my phone away.

I did not call him to ask whether they had reached a decision.

I did not send a second message to make sure he knew I was waiting.

I let them work it out.

It was uncomfortable.

I had become so accustomed to stepping in that doing nothing felt like neglect.

But it was not neglect.

They were adults.

They could make a decision, explain it to their relatives, and deal with the disappointment if someone objected.

I could help them think through the choices.

I could not do the choosing for them.

That evening, Vanessa called.

I almost did not recognize her voice because she sounded calmer than she had during our earlier conversations.

"Hi," she said. "Do you have a minute?"

"Of course."

"I wanted to ask you something about the decorations."

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

"All right."

"Would it be okay if the children helped you put up the tree? They keep asking when they can come over."

I looked toward the living room.

The wooden star sat on the table beside the box.

"I'd like that."

"I know Christmas has been stressful."

"It has."

"I'm sorry."

"Thank you."

She hesitated.

"I don't want the children to feel like they can't come to your house because the adults are arguing."

"Neither do I."

"They love being there."

"I love having them here."

"Then maybe we can keep that part simple."

I smiled.

"That sounds like a good idea."

She told me that the children had been asking whether the old tree would be up this year.

The youngest remembered the lights.

The older one remembered hanging the ornaments.

They had asked whether the wooden star would go at the top again.

I glanced at it on the table.

"It will," I said.

"Good."

We spoke for a few more minutes.

She did not ask me to pay for anything.

I did not offer to.

We talked about what the children might want to decorate and whether they would need help reaching the higher branches.

It was an ordinary conversation.

That was what made it feel important.

After we hung up, I took the wooden star to the kitchen and placed it on the shelf beside Diane's blue mug.

I wanted to keep it somewhere safe until the tree was ready.

Then I looked at the other decorations.

There were enough lights for the tree.

There were ornaments the children had made at school.

There were a few glass balls that had survived years of storage and several that had not.

We did not need to buy anything new.

The house did not need to look different to be ready for Christmas.

It needed to feel like a place where people could come without anybody pretending to be someone else.

The next morning, Colin called with an update.

"We're going to talk to Vanessa's mother tonight," he said. "We're going to explain that the big gathering won't work at your house."

"All right."

"We may still have everybody together somewhere else. We're looking at a community room."

"That could work."

"And if we can't arrange it, we'll do something smaller here."

I nodded, even though he could not see me.

"Either way, we'll make it work."

He sounded more certain than he had a few days earlier.

I was glad.

But I did not tell him that I could cover the cost of a room if he needed it.

I waited for him to ask what help I was willing to offer.

He did not ask.

Instead, he said, "I'm going to handle the conversation with her family. I should have done that from the beginning."

"Yes," I said. "You should have."

There was a pause.

Then he laughed softly.

"You're not making this easy for me, are you?"

"I'm making it honest."

"Fair enough."

We said goodbye.

I put the phone down and went back to the living room.

The Christmas boxes were still open.

The folding chairs were stacked against the wall.

The tree was waiting.

I took a cloth from the cleaning cupboard and wiped the dust from the wooden star.

Then I set it carefully beside the box of ornaments.

I did not know exactly how Christmas would look yet.

But I knew that I wanted the children to help decorate the tree.

I knew that I wanted Margaret at my table.

I knew that I wanted Colin and Vanessa to be able to make decisions without assuming I would pay for every consequence.

And I knew that I could welcome my family without handing over the responsibility for my home.

Those things were enough for one day.

I closed the storage boxes and left the decorations where they were.

For once, I did not rush to finish the work simply because the calendar told me Christmas was coming.

I had time to prepare.

And I had finally started to understand that preparing for a holiday was not the same as surrendering to it.

*END PART 12**

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Colin Called After Speaking to Vanessa’s Family, and for Once He Did Not Ask Me to Fix Their Disappointment

The next morning, I went into the garage to look for the folding chairs.
