Go ahead."

"We went through the numbers last night."

I sat down at the kitchen table.

"And?"

"We can't afford to pay for everything Vanessa planned."

I looked at the notepad beside the telephone.

I had written down the guest list and the dishes we expected people to bring.

I had left the cost column blank.

"What can you afford?" I asked.

There was a pause.

"We can cover some of the food and the things the children need. We can contribute toward the rest, but not as much as Vanessa thought."

"How much?"

He told me a figure.

It was not a large amount compared with the cost of feeding thirty-one people.

But it was an honest number.

I wrote it down.

"All right," I said.

"That's all?"

"What did you expect me to say?"

"I don't know. I thought you'd tell me it wasn't enough."

"Would that make it more?"

He gave a short laugh.

"No."

"Then we have our answer."

He was quiet for a moment.

"Vanessa wasn't happy."

"I imagine not."

"She says her family will think we're being cheap."

I leaned back in my chair.

"Are you being cheap?"

"I don't think so."

"Then you need to decide whose opinion matters more: the people who expect a perfect Christmas or the people who have to pay for it."

He did not answer right away.

I knew that question was not easy for him.

Colin had always wanted people to be happy with him.

As a boy, he would sometimes give up a toy rather than argue with another child.

When he grew older, he learned to smooth over disagreements before anyone had to sit with the discomfort.

It made him kind.

It also made him vulnerable to anyone who mistook kindness for an endless supply of agreement.

"Can I come over tonight?" he asked.

"Of course."

"And could we talk about the plan again?"

"Bring the numbers."

He arrived shortly after six with a sheet of paper folded in half.

He had written their expected expenses in a neat column.

There were groceries, children's presents, travel costs, and a few household bills.

He had marked the things they could not change and circled the things they could reduce.

I noticed that he had included the money they already owed on the car.

"You put everything down," I said.

"I figured we should look at the whole picture."

"That's a good idea."

He spread the paper across the kitchen table.

"We can contribute this much toward the Christmas food. We can bring drinks and a couple of dishes. Vanessa's family can bring what they offered."

"And the decorations?"

"We'll use what we already have."

I nodded.

"What about the extra guests?"

"That's the difficult part."

He rubbed his hands together.

"Vanessa has spoken to her mother. Her mother says everybody is expecting to come."

"Expecting isn't the same as having been invited by me."

"I know."

"Does Vanessa understand that?"

"She does now. She's still upset, but she understands."

I studied the list.

Thirty-one people.

My sister.

Our own small household.

The kitchen and dining room were not large enough for everyone to sit comfortably at once.

We could move chairs into the living room, but that would leave people balancing plates on their knees.

We could set up folding tables, but we would need to borrow them.

Even if the money worked, the space might not.

"Have you considered splitting the gathering?" I asked.

Colin looked at me.

"What do you mean?"

"Your family could have a meal at your parents' house another day. Or you could visit them on Christmas Eve and come here on Christmas Day. There are other ways to see everybody."

"Vanessa wants everyone together."

"I understand that."

"She says it won't feel like Christmas if people are separated."

I looked out the window.

The lawn was damp from the previous night's rain.

Diane used to say that people could sit in separate rooms and still belong to the same family.

She had not liked the pressure to make every gathering perfect.

She believed that a meal could be simple and still be generous.

I wished I had remembered that more often.

"Colin," I said, "what do you want Christmas to be?"

He looked at the paper.

"I want the kids to have a good day."

"That's a start."

"I want Vanessa to be happy."

"That's understandable."

"And I don't want to disappoint her family."

I waited.

He lifted his head.

"I guess I want everybody to be happy."

"That's a lot of responsibility for one day."

He smiled faintly.

"You're telling me."

"I'm telling you because I spent years trying to do the same thing."

I tapped the paper with one finger.

"Look at this list. These are real expenses. Your income is real. My income is real. The space in this house is real. We can't make those things disappear by wanting everybody to be pleased."

He nodded.

"I know."

"Then the plan has to fit what we have, not what we wish we had."

We worked through the figures together.

I offered to pay for the main dish and a reasonable amount of groceries.

Colin and Vanessa would provide drinks and two side dishes.

Vanessa's relatives would bring the dishes they had offered.

We agreed that no one would use my card for Christmas shopping.

If an unexpected expense came up, we would discuss it first.

It was not an extravagant arrangement.

It was also not an unkind one.

When we finished, Colin folded the paper and placed it in his coat pocket.

"Thank you," he said.

"For what?"

"For helping us work it out."

I looked at him.

"I've always been willing to help you, son. I just need us to be honest about what help means."

He nodded.

Then he asked, "Would you be upset if we decided not to host everybody here?"

The question surprised me.

"No."

"Even after all the planning?"

"Especially after all the planning. If the numbers don't work, we need to change the plan."

He seemed relieved.

"I think Vanessa needs to hear that from you."

"Then bring her over tomorrow."

The next evening, Vanessa arrived with a small notebook of her own.

She sat down and looked at the figures Colin had written.

"I spoke to my mother again," she said. "She can bring the desserts, and my sister will bring the salad. My aunt offered to make a casserole."

"That's helpful," I said.

"It still won't solve the space problem."

"No."

She looked toward the dining room.

"I think I got carried away."

I did not interrupt.

"I wanted everybody to come here because your house feels like a proper family Christmas. There is room for the children to play, and everybody knows where to go."

I listened.

"And I didn't think about how much work it would be for you. Or how much money it would cost."

Her voice had softened.

"I thought you would just handle it, like you usually do."

There it was.

Not a dramatic confession.

Not an apology that fixed everything.

Just an honest sentence.

"I appreciate you saying that," I told her.

She looked down at the notebook.

"I don't want you to think I only care about what you can pay for."

"I don't think that."

"Sometimes I probably act as if I do."

I let the silence sit between us.

Then I said, "We all get used to things. Sometimes we don't notice what our habits look like to other people."

She nodded.

Colin sat beside her.

"We could invite fewer people here," he suggested. "Then visit Vanessa's parents another day."

Vanessa thought about it.

"That would mean telling some people the plan has changed."

"Yes," I said.

She sighed.

"I hate doing that."

"So do I."

She looked at me.

"But it needs to be done."

"Yes."

We discussed the options.

One possibility was to host a smaller Christmas meal at my house, with our immediate family and my sister.

Another was to move the large gathering to a rented community room, where everyone could bring food and share the costs.

The second option would require more coordination.

The first would be easier, but Vanessa worried that her relatives would feel excluded.

I reminded her that they could still see one another on another day.

She did not love the idea.

But she no longer dismissed it.

By the end of the evening, we had agreed not to promise anyone anything else until the location and guest list were settled.

Vanessa took her notebook home.

Colin stayed behind for a few minutes.

"I think she's trying," he said.

"I think she is too."

"Are you still angry?"

I considered the question.

"I'm still disappointed about how it happened."

"That's fair."

"But I'm not interested in staying angry if we can change what happens next."

He nodded.

I looked at the folded budget in his hand.

"Keep that paper," I said.

"I will."

"Not because I want to check your spending. Because I want you to know what your own numbers look like before you promise something to somebody else."

He tucked it into his wallet.

"I understand."

After he left, I stood in the kitchen for a while.

The Christmas plan was still unfinished.

There were people to call, dishes to arrange, and decisions to make.

But I felt something I had not felt when Vanessa first announced the gathering.

I felt that I was allowed to be part of the decision.

That was a small thing.

It was also the thing I had needed all along.

*END PART 11**

Click here to continue reading: PART 12: I Took Down the Old Christmas Boxes and Realized I Had Been Keeping More Than Decorations in Storage

Two days later, Colin called me before breakfast.
