I thought the card would work. It had always worked before."

"I understand."

"No, I don't think you do."

Her voice was sharper now.

"I had people behind me. The cashier was waiting. I had to stand there trying to figure out what was wrong while everybody watched."

I could picture the scene.

The bright supermarket lights.

The line behind her.

The Christmas music playing while she tried the card again.

I had not wanted her to experience that.

But I also knew that if I apologized for the embarrassment without addressing the spending, we would be back where we started.

"I'm sorry you were embarrassed," I said. "I didn't want that to happen."

She looked at me, perhaps expecting more.

"But I can't keep paying for purchases without knowing what I'm agreeing to."

Her expression tightened.

"So now I have to ask permission for everything?"

"No."

"That's what it feels like."

I folded my hands on the table.

"Then let's make the arrangement clear. If I offer to help with something, we'll agree on what it is. If you want to buy something for your household, you decide whether you can afford it. Those are not the same thing."

She looked away.

Colin leaned forward.

"Vanessa, we need to talk about the Christmas gathering too."

She let out a small breath.

"I knew this was going to be about Christmas."

"It is about Christmas," I said. "But it's also about how we make decisions together."

She looked back at me.

"I told you my family was coming. I didn't think it would become such a big issue."

"You told me thirty people were coming to my house as if the decision had already been made."

"Because everyone does Christmas together."

"At your parents' house?"

"Usually."

"Then why isn't it happening there this year?"

She paused.

I waited.

"There's not enough room," she said eventually.

I looked around my kitchen.

My house was comfortable.

It was not a banquet hall.

"How many people can your parents accommodate?"

"I don't know. Twenty, maybe, if everyone squeezes in."

"And you thought thirty would fit here?"

"Your house is bigger."

That was true.

It was also not the whole story.

"My house has more space," I said. "But that doesn't mean I can host any number of people without planning. We need chairs, food, dishes, parking, and somewhere for everyone to sit."

"We can bring things."

"Good. That's something we can discuss."

She looked as if she had expected me to refuse everything.

I could see her trying to work out whether my willingness to discuss the gathering was genuine.

"I already told my mother it would be here," she said.

"When did you tell her?"

"Last week."

I glanced at Colin.

He looked surprised too.

"You told your mother last week?" he asked.

Vanessa nodded.

"I thought it was settled."

"Did you ask my father last week?" Colin said.

She did not answer immediately.

Then she said, "I assumed he would be fine with it."

I felt a familiar irritation rise in my chest.

I wanted to tell her that assumptions were precisely how we had arrived at this point.

Instead, I kept my voice even.

"Vanessa, you can invite your family to a gathering at your home. You can invite them to your parents' home. You can even ask me to host them here. But asking and announcing are different things."

She rubbed her thumb against the edge of her phone.

"I didn't mean to be disrespectful."

"I believe you."

She looked surprised.

"I don't think you woke up planning to disrespect me," I continued. "I think you've become accustomed to knowing that I'll help, and that made it easy to stop asking."

The kitchen became quiet.

Colin looked down at the table.

Vanessa's eyes filled slightly, though she did not cry.

"I never thought of it like that."

"I know."

"I thought you liked having us here."

"I do."

"Then why does everything suddenly have to be discussed?"

"Because liking your family doesn't mean I can make every decision for your family."

She pressed her lips together.

For a moment, I wondered whether I had been too blunt.

Then she asked a question I had not expected.

"Do you think we're taking advantage of you?"

I took my time answering.

"I think we've fallen into an arrangement where I keep giving, you keep expecting, and nobody stops to ask whether it still makes sense."

"That's not the same as taking advantage."

"No. It isn't."

She watched me closely.

"But if I kept paying for things because I was afraid you'd be upset with me if I didn't, that would be unhealthy for all of us."

Her shoulders dropped a little.

Colin finally spoke.

"I should have paid more attention too."

Vanessa turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Dad has been helping us for a long time, and I never really asked what that was costing him. I just got used to it."

She looked at him for several seconds.

I could see that she had expected me to be the only person at the table who needed to explain himself.

Now Colin was taking responsibility for his part.

It changed the conversation.

"All right," she said quietly. "I understand that the card arrangement needs to change."

"Thank you," I said.

"But I still don't know what we're doing about Christmas."

"Neither do I," I told her. "That's why we're here."

I took a notepad from the drawer beside the refrigerator.

At the top, I wrote three words.

*Guests. Food. Costs.**

Then I turned the pad toward them.

"Let's start with the guest list."

Vanessa unlocked her phone.

"I have the names."

She scrolled through a message thread and began reading.

Her parents.

Her sister and brother-in-law.

Their children.

An aunt.

Two cousins.

A family friend who apparently spent every Christmas with them.

The list continued.

I counted as she spoke.

By the time she reached the end, the number was thirty-one.

"Thirty-one," I said.

"One of the children is a toddler," she replied. "I didn't count him when I first said thirty."

I wrote the number down.

"All right. Thirty-one people."

"Some won't need full meals," she said quickly.

"They will all need somewhere to sit."

She looked at the page.

"That's fair."

"How many people are you expecting from our side?"

She glanced at Colin.

"I thought it would just be us and the children."

"That was my understanding too," I said.

Colin nodded.

Vanessa frowned.

"But I thought your family was small."

"It is," I replied. "That doesn't mean I don't have people I'd like to see."

I had a sister who lived across town.

She had spent the last few Christmases visiting her husband's family because I had told her I was usually busy with Colin's household.

I had never admitted that I missed having her around.

I had simply assumed that she would understand.

That was another assumption I needed to stop making.

"I'd like to invite my sister for Christmas," I said. "If we're hosting here, I'd like her to be part of it."

Vanessa blinked.

"Of course."

"And if we need to limit the guest list because the house can't comfortably hold everyone, we'll need to decide that together."

She nodded, although reluctantly.

I wrote down the names we knew.

Then I drew a line beneath them.

"Now the food."

Vanessa started listing dishes.

Roast turkey.

Ham.

Potatoes.

Vegetables.

Salads.

Desserts.

Drinks.

There were several items she had already promised her family.

I asked which ones they could bring.

She said her mother would probably make two desserts.

Her sister could bring a salad.

Her aunt usually brought a casserole.

"That helps," I said.

She seemed to relax a little.

Then we reached the cost.

Vanessa looked at the notepad.

"I thought you usually covered the Christmas food."

"I've covered a lot of it in the past."

"So you won't this year?"

"I'll contribute to an amount we agree on. I won't cover an unlimited shopping list."

She looked at Colin.

He answered before she could ask him to intervene.

"We'll have to budget for the rest ourselves."

Vanessa sat back.

"I don't know how much we can afford."

"Then we need to work that out before we promise people anything," I said.

It was the simplest answer I could give her.

It was also the answer I had avoided giving for years.

We did not settle everything that evening.

We agreed that Vanessa would speak to her family about what they could bring.

Colin would review their household budget and work out what they could contribute.

I would check the number of chairs we had and whether my sister could join us.

We would speak again in two days.

Before they left, Vanessa stood by the kitchen counter and picked up her handbag.

"I am sorry I told everyone before asking you," she said.

I looked at her.

"Thank you."

"I really did think you'd be happy to have everybody here."

"I am happy to have people here when we've agreed on it."

She gave a small nod.

Then she added, "I don't want the children to feel that Christmas is becoming a problem."

"Neither do I."

Colin put on his coat.

"We'll figure it out."

I hoped he was right.

After they left, I carried the notepad back to the table.

The guest list was still too long for the room to feel comfortable.

The food list was expensive.

The budget was uncertain.

But for the first time, we had all looked at the same problem instead of expecting me to solve it quietly.

I put the notepad beside Diane's blue mug.

Then I turned off the kitchen light.

*END PART 10**

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: The Budget Was Smaller Than Anyone Wanted, but It Was the First Honest Christmas Plan We Had Made

Vanessa arrived just after five.
