I think we need to work out Christmas properly.*

I typed a reply.

Come over this afternoon. Bring Vanessa if she's willing. I think we should all sit down together.*

I stared at the message before sending it.

Part of me wanted to speak to Colin alone.

He was my son, and there were things I could say to him without worrying about how Vanessa might interpret them.

But she was the person who had announced that thirty people would be coming to my house.

She was also the person who had made the arrangements without asking whether I agreed.

If I wanted the arrangements to change, I needed to speak to the person who had made them.

I sent the message.

Colin replied almost immediately.

I'll ask her.*

I set the phone down.

Then I opened the cupboard beneath the kitchen counter and took out the folder where I kept household bills.

The folder was older than Vanessa's marriage to Colin.

Inside were receipts, insurance documents, property tax statements, and a few handwritten notes from Diane about repairs we had postponed until the following spring.

I found the papers relating to the house.

The mortgage had been paid off years ago.

The roof was sound.

The furnace had been serviced in October.

The house was not falling apart, and I was not struggling to keep it standing.

But that did not mean I had unlimited money.

There was a difference between being comfortable and being able to absorb every expense someone else chose to create.

For a long time, I had acted as if there were no difference.

When Colin needed help, I helped.

When Vanessa said the children needed something, I listened.

When an unexpected bill appeared, I paid it if I could.

At first, I had been happy to do it.

I liked being useful.

After Diane died, the house became quieter, and helping Colin's family gave my days a little more purpose.

There were mornings when a phone call from one of the children could change the whole shape of my day.

There were weekends when the house filled with noise and I forgot, for a while, how empty it felt after everyone left.

I had confused that happiness with a responsibility to keep everything going.

The realization did not make me love them less.

It made me understand how much I had been asking money to do.

I closed the folder.

At eleven, Colin called.

"Hey, Dad."

"Hello, son."

"I spoke to Vanessa."

"And?"

"She's not sure she wants to come over."

I took a sip of coffee.

"She doesn't have to."

"She thinks you're going to lecture her."

"I'm not planning to lecture anybody."

"She says you already decided everything without talking to her."

I looked at the folder on the table.

"That's interesting, considering how the Christmas guest list was decided."

Colin was quiet.

I regretted the sharpness of my words almost as soon as I said them, but I did not take them back.

"Dad, she didn't mean it the way you took it."

"Then she can tell me what she meant."

"I know."

"Colin, I want to talk about what we can actually do. Not what anybody wishes we could do. There's a difference."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

He exhaled.

"I'm trying to."

That answer was more honest than the ones he usually gave me when he wanted a difficult conversation to end.

I appreciated it.

"All right," I said. "Come over at three. If Vanessa joins us, we'll talk together. If she doesn't, you and I can still discuss what needs discussing."

"I'll be there."

After we hung up, I began preparing lunch.

I made a sandwich and ate it standing at the counter.

Then I washed the plate immediately instead of leaving it in the sink.

It was a small thing, but I had started noticing how often I left ordinary tasks unfinished because I expected someone else to arrive and change my plans.

I had done it with meals.

I had done it with weekends.

I had even done it with money.

I would put off buying something for myself because I knew there might be another request from Colin's household.

I could not remember the last time I had purchased something without first considering whether I might need that money for them.

The answer bothered me more than I expected.

I did not want to become a man who counted every dollar he spent on his grandchildren.

I also did not want to become a man who resented his grandchildren because their parents had grown accustomed to his help.

Those were two different things.

I wanted to keep them different.

At two-thirty, I set three cups on the kitchen table.

I nearly took down a fourth.

Diane's mug was in the cupboard beside the others, and my hand went toward it automatically.

I stopped.

Then I put the blue mug back where it belonged.

I did not need to pretend she was sitting at the table to remember what she would have wanted from me.

She would have wanted me to speak honestly.

She would have wanted Colin to understand that being loved did not mean being excused from every difficult responsibility.

And she would have wanted Christmas to be about the people in the room, not the money spent preparing for them.

At three-fifteen, Colin arrived alone.

He came through the front door carrying a small paper bag from the bakery near his office.

"I brought these," he said, holding it up.

"What did you get?"

"Those cinnamon things you like."

"I haven't had one in months."

"I know."

He placed the bag on the counter.

The gesture touched me more than it should have.

Not because the pastries were expensive.

Because he had remembered something about me that had nothing to do with what I could provide.

We sat at the kitchen table.

Colin wrapped both hands around his cup.

"Vanessa says she's willing to talk later," he said. "But she's still upset."

"I imagine she is."

"She's embarrassed about what happened at the store."

"I didn't want to embarrass her."

"I know."

"Do you?"

He looked down at his coffee.

"I think you wanted to stop paying for things without warning us."

"That's part of it."

"What else is there?"

I took a moment before answering.

"I don't want to feel that every time the phone rings, somebody needs something from me."

His eyes lifted.

I had never said it quite that way before.

"I don't mean the children," I added. "I want them to call. I want them to come over. I want to know what's happening in their lives."

"I know you do."

"But when every conversation turns into a request, I start feeling like the money is the reason everybody keeps me close."

Colin's face changed.

Not dramatically.

He simply stopped moving his cup.

"That's not why we love you, Dad."

"I hope not."

"It isn't."

"I believe you love me. But I also think we've all gotten used to a way of doing things that isn't working anymore."

He leaned back in his chair.

For the first time since he arrived, he did not look as if he were preparing to defend Vanessa.

He looked tired.

"We didn't realize how much it was bothering you."

"I didn't tell you clearly enough."

"You could have."

"Yes. I could have."

The admission seemed to surprise him.

I continued before he could fill the silence.

"I should have explained the limits when I first gave you access to that card. I should have said what I was comfortable covering and what needed to be discussed. Instead, I kept saying yes because it was easier than having an uncomfortable conversation."

Colin rubbed his forehead.

"That sounds familiar."

"What does?"

"Not wanting to upset anybody, so you leave things alone until they become bigger than they should be."

I looked at him.

There was enough truth in that sentence to make me uncomfortable.

"Your mother used to say the same thing about me."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"She said it about a lot of things."

"She wasn't always wrong."

For a moment, we both smiled.

Then the smile faded, and the Christmas problem was still sitting between us.

"What do you think we should do?" Colin asked.

I looked toward the living room.

The Christmas decorations were still in their storage boxes.

I had not put up the tree.

Usually, I would have started by now.

"I think we need to agree on the guest list before we talk about food or decorations," I said. "Then we need to decide who is paying for what."

"Thirty people is a lot."

"It is."

"Vanessa's parents are expecting everyone to come."

"Did they know the gathering was supposed to be at my house?"

Colin hesitated.

"I don't know exactly what she told them."

"Then perhaps we should find out."

He nodded slowly.

I did not enjoy putting the responsibility back in his hands.

But I could not solve a problem if I continued making decisions around information I did not have.

"Call Vanessa," I said. "Ask her to come over when she's ready. We can make a plan together."

He picked up his phone, then stopped.

"Are you going to tell her she can't bring her family?"

"I'm going to ask how many people she invited, what she promised them, and what she expects me to provide."

"And if the answers don't work?"

"Then we'll have to change the plan."

Colin studied me for a moment.

"You're serious about this."

"Yes."

He nodded.

This time, he did not ask me to make an exception.

We finished our coffee and opened the bakery bag.

The cinnamon pastries were slightly crushed from the trip, but they tasted exactly as I remembered.

We ate them at the kitchen table while the winter light moved across the floor.

It was an ordinary afternoon.

That was what I wanted Christmas to become again.

Not a test of how much I could pay.

Not a competition over who had the biggest gathering.

Just a day when people could sit together without pretending that love meant nobody ever had to say no.

*END PART 9**

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Vanessa Finally Came to Talk, and I Learned That We Had Been Arguing About More Than Thirty Plates

The next morning, I woke before the alarm.
