13 – I Kept Watching the Second Page of Nana’s Amendment, Knowing My Mother’s Anger Could Not Tell Me What Was Written There

I was still waiting for the words.

Mr. Caldwell had unfolded the second page of Nana’s amendment.

My mother had already challenged its validity.

My father had looked frightened.

And I had refused to let my mother push me out of the conversation.

But the question that mattered most remained unanswered.

What had Nana changed?

I looked at the paper in Mr. Caldwell’s hands.

I could see that it existed.

I knew it carried instructions concerning her estate.

But I could not tell what those instructions were.

That was the part I kept returning to.

My mother had reacted before the amendment was fully explained.

She had insisted that the change was impossible.

Then she had questioned Nana’s ability to understand what she was signing.

Mr. Caldwell had answered her.

He had given the date.

Three days before Nana died.

He had explained that two independent witnesses were involved.

He had said the amendment was notarized.

Then he had mentioned Nana’s attending physician.

There was written confirmation that she had been mentally competent.

Those were the facts available to me.

And they were important.

But they did not explain the contents of the amendment.

I had to remember that.

I could not turn evidence of a properly executed document into evidence of what the document actually said.

It was tempting.

Especially with my parents reacting the way they had.

My mother seemed desperate to reject the change.

My father looked afraid.

I wanted to believe their reactions told me something definite.

But I had no way to know whether they did.

I thought about what fear could mean.

It could mean someone expected to lose something.

It could mean someone was worried about a disagreement.

It could mean someone had heard information they had not anticipated.

Those were possibilities.

Nothing more.

And I knew I would be unfair if I chose the most frightening explanation simply because it made the scene easier to understand.

I looked toward my father.

His expression remained fixed in my memory.

I wished he would explain himself.

I wished he would say what troubled him.

But wishing did not create an answer.

I could not give him words he had not spoken.

I turned my attention back to my mother.

Her attempt to silence me still hurt.

I had asked the lawyer to continue.

That was all.

I had not accused her.

I had not challenged my father.

I had not claimed that Nana had left me anything.

Yet she had told me to stay out of the matter.

I remembered how quickly I had considered obeying.

That was the part that made me uncomfortable.

I had almost let her anger determine my place in a conversation I had every reason to hear.

Then I had refused.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

I had simply told her I intended to remain.

That choice still mattered to me.

Even though it did not reveal the amendment.

Even though it did not resolve my parents’ reactions.

Even though it left me sitting there with the same unanswered questions.

I had made one decision for myself.

And I could stand by it.

I looked again at the second page.

I wanted to know whether Nana had been trying to correct something.

I wanted to know whether she had changed the distribution of her property.

I wanted to know whether her final instructions would explain the tension in the room.

But I could not answer any of those questions.

Not yet.

The available account of the reading stopped with Mr. Caldwell opening that page.

No further words from the document had been supplied.

No later conversation had been described.

No final distribution had been revealed.

I could not honestly continue the plot beyond that point.

I could only describe the uncertainty that remained.

I thought about Nana’s signature.

Three days before her death.

A decision made during the final part of her life.

A decision that had been witnessed and notarized.

A decision her physician said she was capable of making.

My mother wanted to challenge it.

I wanted to understand it.

Those were not the same things.

And I was becoming more certain that understanding had to come before judgment.

I did not know whether I would agree with Nana’s instructions.

I did not know whether I would be disappointed.

I did not know whether I would feel relieved.

I only knew that they were hers.

And I wanted to hear them without someone else deciding what I should think.

That was the thought I held on to.

Not an accusation.

Not a promise of an inheritance.

Not a theory about a hidden secret.

Just the belief that Nana’s actual words mattered.

I had already refused my mother’s order.

Now I had to be equally careful with myself.

I could not allow my own suspicions to become another way of speaking over Nana.

If the amendment contained something painful, I would have to face it.

If it contained something unexpected, I would have to consider it.

If it raised more questions, I would have to admit that too.

But none of those possibilities had happened in the portion of the story I knew.

The second page was open.

The room was tense.

And I was still waiting.

I remembered thinking that the next words might change how I understood my family.

Perhaps they would.

Perhaps they would not.

I refused to decide before hearing them.

Click here to continue reading: PART
