9 – As Nana’s Second Page Lay Before Us, I Realized How Much of My Fear Came From Questions Nobody Had Answered

The hardest part was not knowing.

I had thought my mother’s anger would be the worst thing about Nana’s will reading.

Then I saw my father’s face.

And suddenly, the argument was no longer the only thing that frightened me.

Mr. Caldwell had opened the second page of the amendment.

I remained seated.

My mother had already tried to silence me.

I had already told her I would stay.

There was nothing more I needed to prove in that moment.

I wanted to hear Nana’s instructions.

That was all.

But the silence around the document made me think about everything I still did not understand.

Nana had signed an amendment three days before she died.

That was the first thing Mr. Caldwell had established.

Two independent people had witnessed her signature.

The document had been notarized.

Her attending physician had confirmed in writing that she was mentally capable of making the decision.

Each fact had answered one of my mother’s objections.

None had explained why she was so upset.

I looked at the document again.

I wished I could understand it simply by seeing the pages.

But paper did not explain itself.

Someone had to read the words.

Someone had to tell us what Nana had actually instructed.

Until that happened, the questions remained.

I did not know what she had changed.

I did not know who would be affected.

I did not know whether the amendment concerned something small or something that would alter the entire estate.

I only knew the change mattered enough to make my parents react.

My mother had responded with anger.

My father had responded with fear.

And I had responded by asking Mr. Caldwell to continue.

Three different reactions.

One document.

No explanation yet.

That was the situation I kept returning to.

I had to admit that my imagination was making it worse.

Every time I remembered my father’s expression, I wanted to attach a reason to it.

Perhaps he had expected something different.

Perhaps he understood the amendment better than I did.

Perhaps he knew why Nana had changed her instructions.

But those were possibilities.

Not facts.

I had to remind myself of that distinction.

It was easy to forget when the people involved were my own parents.

I had spent enough time around them to recognize their expressions.

Or at least I believed I had.

That belief was part of what frightened me.

I thought I understood their anger.

Their silence.

The way they reacted when something went wrong.

Yet my father had shown me an expression I could not explain.

I did not want to pretend otherwise.

I looked toward my mother.

Her refusal to accept the amendment had seemed immediate.

She had not waited to hear its contents.

She had challenged the possibility that Nana had changed her instructions at all.

Then she questioned Nana’s state of mind.

I understood that legal documents could be disputed.

I understood that a person’s mental capacity could matter.

Those were serious concerns.

But Mr. Caldwell had answered her questions calmly and specifically.

And her objections had not made the amendment disappear.

That was what stayed with me.

The document was still there.

The signature remained.

The witnesses remained.

The notarization remained.

The physician’s letter remained.

My mother could object to the document.

But she could not erase the facts by raising her voice.

I had begun to understand the difference between being forceful and being right.

The two were not always connected.

I wished I had understood that sooner.

Not because I knew my mother was wrong about everything.

I did not.

But because I had nearly treated her anger as a reason to abandon my own questions.

That was what troubled me about my first instinct.

I had wanted the confrontation to end.

I had wanted everyone to stop arguing.

And for a moment, I had been prepared to let my mother decide whether I should speak.

Looking back, I was ashamed of how quickly I had considered surrendering my place in the conversation.

Nana had left a legal amendment.

I had come to hear her final instructions.

There was nothing unreasonable about wanting the reading completed.

I did not need anyone’s anger to give me permission.

Still, I did not feel brave.

I felt uncertain.

There was a difference.

Bravery would have sounded impressive when I told the story afterward.

Uncertainty was what I actually remembered.

I wondered whether speaking had made the situation worse.

I wondered whether my parents would blame me for insisting that Mr. Caldwell continue.

I wondered whether Nana’s instructions would explain the tension or deepen it.

Then I reminded myself that none of those worries changed what was written.

The amendment already existed.

Whatever Nana had decided, my silence would not change it.

My mother’s anger would not change it either.

We could only learn what the document contained.

That was the next necessary step.

I looked at Mr. Caldwell.

He had been patient with my mother’s interruptions.

He had given her the reasons the amendment could not simply be dismissed on the grounds she raised.

And he had returned to the pages when I asked him to continue.

I appreciated that.

Not because he had taken my side.

I had not asked him to.

I appreciated that he had stayed focused on what could be established.

I needed that steadiness.

Without it, the room had begun to feel like a place where the loudest person would decide what was true.

And I no longer wanted to participate in that kind of conversation.

My father’s silence remained difficult to interpret.

I kept wondering whether he would speak.

Whether he would support my mother.

Whether he would ask Mr. Caldwell a question of his own.

But I could not make him do any of those things.

I could only observe what happened.

And in the part of the reading I knew, he had not explained himself.

I returned my attention to the document.

The second page had been unfolded.

That was where the reliable account of the reading stopped.

I could not claim to know what Mr. Caldwell read afterward.

I could not describe a revelation I had not been given.

I could not say Nana had accused anyone of wrongdoing.

And I could not assign hidden motives to my parents simply because their reactions unsettled me.

There were still answers missing.

I hated that.

But I would rather admit what I did not know than turn my fear into a false memory.

Nana deserved that much.

So did the truth.

I stayed in my chair and held on to the only decision I had made.

I was there to hear her wishes.

And I would not allow anyone else to decide what I was permitted to know.

Click here to continue reading: PART
