5 – The Lawyer Opened Nana’s Second Page, and I Began to Understand Why Hearing Her Own Words Mattered More Than My Mother’s Objections

Mr. Caldwell had unfolded the second page.

I watched him straighten it.

My mother had finally stopped speaking.

My father was still quiet.

And I was sitting there, waiting for words that might explain why both of them had reacted so strongly.

I wanted an answer.

That was the simplest way to describe it.

I did not want another argument about the amendment.

I did not want another accusation about Nana’s condition.

I wanted to hear what she had written.

But wanting an answer and having one were different things.

Mr. Caldwell had not yet explained the contents of that second page.

I could see the document in his hands.

I could not see every word on it.

And I knew better than to pretend I understood something simply because I could see the paper carrying it.

That had become important to me during the reading.

My mother had decided the amendment was unacceptable before we heard its instructions.

I did not want to make the same mistake in the opposite direction.

I did not want to decide it was wonderful.

Or fair.

Or evidence that I had been right about anything.

I wanted to listen first.

Three days before Nana died, she had signed the amendment.

I kept returning to that fact.

Three days.

Such a small amount of time.

Yet enough time for her to make a decision that was now sitting in front of us.

Mr. Caldwell had explained the formalities.

Two independent witnesses.

A notary.

And confirmation from Nana’s attending physician that she understood what she was signing.

Those details did not tell me what the amendment meant.

They told me why my mother’s first objections had not ended the reading.

I looked toward her.

She had wanted the document dismissed.

First because she claimed it could not be genuine.

Then because she believed Nana had been too ill to understand it.

Mr. Caldwell had answered both concerns.

My mother had not received the answer she wanted.

I could see that.

What I could not see was the reason.

Why did the possibility of a changed estate frighten my father?

Why did it make my mother so angry?

Why had she wanted me to stay silent?

I asked myself those questions without speaking them.

There was enough tension in the room already.

I had made my decision.

I was staying.

That was all I needed to say for the moment.

I looked back at Mr. Caldwell.

He was the one person in the room who had been able to give us anything definite.

Not an opinion.

Not an accusation.

A date.

A signature.

The conditions under which the document had been completed.

I held on to those details because they were real.

Everything else was still uncertain.

I had never liked admitting when I did not know something.

Sometimes it felt easier to form an explanation.

To tell myself I understood why someone was angry.

To assume I knew what frightened them.

But sitting there, I realized how dangerous that could be.

My mother’s anger did not prove that she had done anything wrong.

My father’s fear did not prove that he knew a secret.

And the existence of Nana’s amendment did not prove that I would benefit from it.

I had to keep those things separate.

That was harder than it sounds.

Especially when the people involved were my parents.

I could look at a stranger’s reaction and admit that I did not understand it.

With my mother and father, I wanted every expression to mean something familiar.

I wanted their behavior to fit the people I believed I knew.

But my father’s face would not leave me alone.

He had looked terrified.

Not simply unhappy.

Not annoyed that the meeting had become complicated.

Terrified.

I remembered looking at him while Mr. Caldwell spoke about the physician’s letter.

That was the moment I began to suspect the document mattered in ways I had not considered.

I still could not explain those ways.

And I refused to invent an explanation just to make myself feel better.

My eyes returned to the second page.

I wondered what Nana had wanted us to understand.

I wondered whether there was anything in her instructions that would make my parents’ reactions seem reasonable.

Perhaps there was.

Perhaps not.

Until Mr. Caldwell read the amendment, all I could do was wonder.

The uncertainty made me uncomfortable.

I had already challenged my mother.

I had told her I would no longer stay out of the conversation.

That was a change for me in that moment.

Not because I believed I had suddenly become fearless.

I had not.

I could still feel the discomfort of speaking against her wishes.

But I had discovered that discomfort was not a reason to surrender my right to listen.

My mother had spoken.

Mr. Caldwell had answered.

I had spoken.

And now the reading could continue.

I thought about the word continue.

Such an ordinary word.

Yet it was the only thing I wanted.

I did not need Mr. Caldwell to promise that Nana had protected me.

I did not need him to tell my mother she was wrong about everything.

I did not need him to explain my father’s fear.

I needed him to read.

The estate belonged to Nana.

The decision belonged to Nana.

The words on those pages were the record she had left.

I could not change any of that.

Neither could my mother.

I felt something settle inside me when I admitted it.

Not happiness.

Not relief.

A kind of determination.

I would hear the instructions before deciding what they meant.

I would not let someone else’s reaction become my understanding of Nana’s wishes.

And I would not make claims about the amendment that I could not support.

Mr. Caldwell held the second page.

The rest of us waited.

That was the last moment I could describe with certainty.

The paper had been opened.

My mother had been challenged.

My father’s fear remained unexplained.

And Nana’s actual instructions were still waiting to be heard.

For now, I had made one choice I could stand behind.

I would stay and listen.
