That doesn't mean every answer has to be pursued at the exact moment you're frightened."

I looked down at the paper.

The distinction made sense.

I had been treating the call as a test of courage.

If I made it, I would prove I could face him.

If I didn't, I would be proving that I was afraid.

But courage was not the only thing that mattered.

Timing mattered.

Purpose mattered.

My ability to listen without immediately accepting or rejecting an explanation mattered.

I wanted to make the call because I had decided it was useful, not because I needed to prove something about myself.

I put the phone back in my pocket.

"Not yet," I said.

My father nodded.

"All right."

We ate lunch.

I tried to focus on the food instead of the conversation I hadn't had.

Afterward, I helped him clear the table.

The ordinary work gave my hands something to do while my mind settled.

I washed the plates.

He dried them.

We put everything away.

When we finished, I returned to the kitchen table.

The paper was still there.

I read the question again.

Did he know anything about the attempted authorizations?

It was direct.

It didn't accuse.

It didn't assume.

It left room for an answer I might not expect.

I folded the paper and placed it in the folder.

Then I took out my phone.

This time, I didn't open the contact.

I first checked the time and considered whether there was any practical reason to make the call that afternoon.

There wasn't.

I had no urgent information to obtain from him.

The bank had confirmed the requests were declined.

My accounts had been secured.

The remaining questions were still being reviewed.

A conversation with my former husband might provide information, but it could not replace the bank's records.

I decided that I would wait until I could approach the conversation without expecting it to resolve everything.

That was a decision, even if it meant doing nothing for the moment.

I told my father what I had decided.

He listened without interrupting.

"That sounds reasonable."

"You're not disappointed?"

"Why would I be?"

"I don't know. I thought you wanted me to stop avoiding it."

"I want you to stop avoiding what matters. That doesn't mean you have to do everything today."

I felt my shoulders loosen.

I had been so accustomed to measuring myself against what I thought other people expected that I had forgotten to ask whether those expectations made sense.

I put the phone on the table.

I didn't feel brave.

I felt more honest.

I could admit that I wanted to speak to my former husband and that I was not ready to do it yet.

I could keep that decision under review without turning it into another source of shame.

For the rest of the afternoon, I worked on the practical tasks that remained.

I reviewed the account security checklist.

I checked that the replacement-card information had been saved.

I confirmed that I knew how to contact the bank if another alert appeared.

I did not reopen the statements I had already reviewed.

When I finished, I placed the checklist back in the folder.

The question about my former husband remained unresolved.

I let it remain there.

I had learned that not every unanswered question required an immediate action.

Sometimes the responsible choice was to prepare, wait, and return to it when I could think clearly.

That evening, I sat with my father in the living room.

We watched a program neither of us cared much about.

I could still feel the worry beneath my ribs.

It had not disappeared.

But I was no longer using the worry to push myself toward a conversation I wasn't ready to have.

For that night, I allowed myself to be where I was.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: When No New Alerts Arrived, I Had to Decide Whether I Could Live With Uncertainty Without Mistaking Silence for Safety

By lunchtime, I had stopped rearranging the folder.
