Some may not have an immediate answer. But you can still decide which one to work on first."

I wrote the questions on a clean page.

WHO INITIATED THE ATTEMPTS?

HOW WAS THE PAYMENT INFORMATION OBTAINED?

ARE THE EARLIER TRANSACTIONS CONNECTED?

WHAT ADDITIONAL PROTECTION SHOULD I USE?

The list looked manageable.

Not easy.

Manageable.

I added another question beneath them.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE CONTACTING MY FORMER HUSBAND?

My father read it.

"That one is important."

"I don't know how to answer it."

"You don't have to answer it all at once."

I rested the pen against the paper.

I wanted to ask my former husband whether he knew anything about the attempted charges.

But I also wanted to understand what information I already had, what I needed to protect, and what I hoped to accomplish by speaking to him.

If I called simply because I was frightened, I might end the conversation more confused than I had started.

If I asked a vague question, I might receive a vague answer.

If I accused him without evidence, I could turn an unanswered question into a fight.

None of those outcomes would help me understand the accounts.

I didn't have to decide never to speak to him.

I only had to decide not to do it without thinking.

I wrote: PURPOSE BEFORE CONTACT.

My father leaned back.

"That sounds like a plan."

"It sounds like something you would write."

"Perhaps you're learning from me."

I gave him a tired smile.

For a moment, the room felt lighter.

Then I looked down at the page again.

I was still frightened.

The three amounts had not become smaller.

The bank had not identified the person responsible.

The earlier transactions still needed clarification.

But I had a way to move forward that did not depend on guessing.

I could contact the bank about the remaining questions.

I could continue securing my accounts.

I could preserve the records.

I could wait until I understood what I wanted from a conversation with my former husband.

Those were separate steps.

I didn't have to complete them all that evening.

My father asked whether I wanted him to sit with me while I drafted the questions for the bank.

I said yes.

We went through the list slowly.

I removed a question that repeated something the representative had already answered.

I rewrote another so it asked for specific information rather than an explanation of everything that had happened.

I kept the question about the earlier transactions separate from the question about the attempted authorizations.

I added a note beside each item showing which account or notification it concerned.

The result was not dramatic.

It was clear.

I placed the new page at the front of the folder.

Then I put the bank records behind it, followed by the statement review and the list of account security changes.

I checked that the original alerts were saved in their own folder on my phone.

I also made sure the written notes were stored somewhere I could find them without searching through every message.

When I finished, I closed the folder.

My father looked at me.

"How do you feel?"

I considered giving him the easy answer.

I could have said I felt better.

I could have said I was fine.

Those words had come naturally to me for years, especially when I wanted a conversation to end.

Instead, I told him the truth.

"I'm scared that the answer will be worse than I expect."

He nodded slowly.

"That is possible."

I stared at him.

"You could at least pretend to reassure me."

"I could tell you that everything will turn out exactly the way you want. But I don't know that."

His voice remained gentle.

"What I can tell you is that you don't have to decide what the answer means before you know what it is."

I looked away.

That was the part I had been struggling with.

I wanted to prepare myself for the worst.

I wanted to imagine every possible explanation so that none of them could surprise me.

But every time I tried, I ended up treating one frightening possibility as if it had already happened.

I had done that with the alerts.

I had done it with the earlier transactions.

I had even done it with the silence from my former husband, though I had not contacted him.

I had been building a story around the missing information.

I needed to stop.

I took the pen and wrote one final note on the page.

UNKNOWN DOES NOT MEAN CONFIRMED.

The words were plain.

They did not make me feel safe.

They gave me something steady to return to.

My father reached for his tea.

"That will do for today."

I closed the notebook.

We spent the next few minutes talking about ordinary things.

He asked whether I wanted to go for a walk the following morning.

I said I might.

He mentioned that he needed to buy groceries.

I offered to go with him.

The conversation did not erase the problem.

It reminded me that my life contained things besides the problem.

Later, I carried the folder to the spare room and placed it on the desk.

I set my phone beside it.

Then I checked the time and turned off the screen.

There were no new alerts.

I did not search the bank application again.

I had already checked the status, recorded the answers, and prepared the next questions.

For once, I let that be enough.

I sat on the bed and looked at the small room around me.

A few days earlier, I would have thought of staying at my father's house as a temporary interruption.

Now I understood that I needed the space.

I needed time to review my accounts without being pressured to explain my feelings.

I needed time to understand what I had agreed to, what I had overlooked, and what remained outside my knowledge.

I needed time to make decisions because I believed they were right, not because I was afraid of what would happen if I waited.

The divorce had ended my marriage in the eyes of the court.

It had not instantly taught me how to live differently.

That work was happening in small, uncomfortable steps.

I turned off the bedside lamp.

The folder remained on the desk.

The questions remained unanswered.

But I no longer felt compelled to invent answers just to make the room quieter.

I lay down and closed my eyes.

Tomorrow, I would contact the bank again if needed.

I would keep the records organized.

I would decide whether a conversation with my former husband served a clear purpose.

And I would keep the difference between what I feared and what I knew.

It wasn't certainty.

It was a way to move forward without surrendering my judgment.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: I Called the Bank With a List of Questions Instead of Accusations, and the Answers Forced Me to Accept How Much Was Still Unknown

By late afternoon, I had reached the point where every page looked the same.
