13 – The Morning After the Alerts, I Tried to Return to My Ordinary Life, but Even Simple Decisions Felt Different Without Him

I woke before the alarm on my phone.

For several seconds, I didn't remember where I was.

Then I saw the unfamiliar curtains, the wooden dresser, and the glass of water on the bedside table.

I was at my father's house.

My marriage was over.

The memory returned without warning, bringing the same tight feeling in my chest that I had carried the day before.

I reached for my phone.

There were no new fraud alerts.

I checked the time, put the phone down, and sat on the edge of the bed.

The quiet should have comforted me.

Instead, I found myself waiting for something else to happen.

I had spent the previous day reacting to notifications, answering questions, and recording information.

Without another alert to respond to, I didn't know what to do with myself.

I washed my face and changed clothes.

When I entered the kitchen, my father was already making coffee.

He looked at me but didn't ask whether I had slept well.

He could probably see the answer.

"Coffee?"

"Please."

I sat at the table while he placed a mug in front of me.

The folder was still beside the fruit bowl where I had left it the night before.

I had expected to feel embarrassed seeing it there.

Instead, I felt relieved that it hadn't disappeared into a drawer.

It reminded me that I hadn't imagined the alerts.

I opened the folder and checked the first page.

The amounts were still there.

So were the dates, the bank notes, and the list of questions I hadn't answered.

I closed it again.

My father sat down opposite me.

"Any new messages?"

"No."

"Good."

I watched him take a sip of coffee.

"Does that mean it's over?"

"It means there haven't been any new messages."

I sighed.

"You always do that."

"Do what?"

"Answer exactly what I ask instead of what I want to hear."

He smiled faintly.

"Sometimes those are two different things."

I looked at the folder.

I knew he was right, but I was tired of living inside the difference.

I wanted the bank to confirm that the danger had passed.

I wanted the unanswered questions to become less important.

I wanted to stop feeling as if my life could change every time my phone lit up.

None of those things had happened.

I drank my coffee and tried to think about what I could reasonably do that day.

There were practical matters waiting for me.

I needed to review my account access.

I needed to keep the bank's instructions somewhere I could find them.

I needed to make sure I had copies of the records.

I also needed to remember that I was no longer living according to the routines of my marriage.

Some of those routines had been comforting.

Others had been so familiar that I had stopped noticing how much I relied on them.

I had always expected my former husband to take care of certain things.

If a bill needed attention, I assumed he would mention it.

If a payment was due, I trusted that we had a plan.

If a financial question came up, I often waited for him to explain it.

I had thought of that as partnership.

Now I needed to learn which responsibilities I had actually understood and which I had merely assumed were being handled.

I opened a notebook and made a list of the accounts I personally needed to review.

I wrote down the bank name, the type of account, and whether I had confirmed the current security settings.

I left room for dates.

I did not write down guesses about who might have initiated the attempted charges.

Those belonged on the separate list of unanswered questions.

My father looked over the page.

"That should help."

"I wish I had done it sooner."

"Maybe."

He didn't soften the word.

Then he added, "You can learn from that without deciding that everything that happened is your fault."

I looked at him.

"I know."

But I wasn't sure I did.

I had spent years judging myself by how well I could keep a difficult situation from becoming visible.

If I could smooth over an argument, I considered myself patient.

If I could solve a problem without asking for help, I considered myself capable.

If I could convince myself that a worry wasn't serious, I considered myself reasonable.

I was beginning to see how easily those habits could become ways of avoiding the truth.

My father pushed the sugar bowl toward me.

I hadn't asked for sugar.

He had simply noticed that I was staring at my coffee.

I added a little and stirred.

Then I opened the bank's website on my phone and reviewed the information I had already secured.

I checked the account details.

I checked the replacement-card status.

I confirmed that the contact information displayed was mine.

Where the bank's instructions required me to wait for an update, I made a note instead of repeatedly trying to force the page to change.

I saved the confirmation screen.

Then I closed the application.

Nothing dramatic happened.

No new message appeared.

No hidden explanation emerged.

I had simply completed another task.

For a few minutes, that was enough.

My father stood to rinse his mug.

"What are you going to do today?"

I looked at the notebook.

"I think I need to get some of my things from home."

He stopped moving.

"Do you feel ready for that?"

"No."

"Then why go today?"

"Because I can't keep staying here without knowing what I'm going back to."

He considered that.

"Are you going because you need something, or because you feel you should prove you can go?"

The question irritated me because I didn't have a quick answer.

I looked down at the notebook.

There were things I genuinely needed.

There were also things I wanted to retrieve because they belonged to the life I had just lost.

I couldn't separate those reasons neatly.

"I need a few personal things," I said. "And some papers."

"Which papers?"

I thought about it.

"My own financial records. Anything that's mine and that I need to understand."

He nodded.

"Make a list before you leave."

I wrote down the documents I wanted to look for.

I didn't include anything I wasn't sure I needed.

I also decided not to turn the visit into a confrontation.

I would collect my belongings, record what I found, and leave any larger questions for another time.

I wasn't going to search through every drawer looking for proof of something I couldn't yet define.

That would not be a careful investigation.

It would be fear wearing the clothes of one.

After breakfast, I folded the notebook and put it inside my bag.

I checked that I had my keys, identification, and phone.

Then I paused beside the front door.

My father stood behind me.

"You don't have to do everything today."

"I know."

"And you can come back whenever you want."

I nodded.

The simple offer made my throat tighten.

I had been so determined to show that I could manage everything myself that I had nearly forgotten what help was supposed to feel like.

It wasn't someone taking over.

It was someone leaving the door open.

I stepped outside and drew a long breath.

The morning air felt cool against my face.

I still had no explanation for the attempted charges.

I still didn't know what the earlier transactions meant.

But I had a plan for the next few hours, and it belonged to me.

For the first time since the courtroom, that distinction mattered more than I expected.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: Returning to the Place Where My Marriage Had Ended Felt Strange, Especially When I Realized How Many Decisions I Had Left for Someone Else

I woke before the alarm on my phone.
