NOT COMPLETED.

I underlined the words once.

The distinction mattered.

The amounts had been frightening, but the alerts did not mean that nearly a million dollars had left my accounts.

I had known that in theory.

Hearing it confirmed again allowed me to breathe more easily.

I asked whether the bank could tell me who had initiated the requests.

She explained what information the bank could review and what it could disclose through its normal procedures.

She could not simply identify a person for me over the phone.

I asked whether the attempts had come from a device or location associated with someone I knew.

She told me that she could not confirm that from the information available in the conversation.

I wrote down her answer as carefully as I had written down the amounts.

No confirmed identity.

No confirmed connection to my former husband.

No confirmed explanation for the attempted payments.

I felt embarrassed by how badly I wanted her to say something different.

I wanted a name.

I wanted a clear direction for my anger.

I wanted to know whether the person responsible had sat across from me at dinner, watched television beside me, or wished me good night before I went to sleep.

Instead, I had to accept that the bank could confirm the status of the transactions without giving me the larger explanation I wanted.

Before ending the call, I asked what else I should do.

The representative reviewed the account security steps and told me how to contact the bank if further suspicious activity appeared.

I thanked her.

When the call ended, I sat still for several seconds.

My father waited until I looked at him.

"What did they say?"

"The attempts were declined. The cards are protected for now. They can't tell me who did it from what they have."

He nodded.

"Did they say the requests were connected to the earlier transactions?"

"No."

"Then keep those as separate entries."

I wrote the call time beside my notes.

I included the representative's explanation in plain language.

I didn't write that the bank had proved anything about my former husband.

It hadn't.

I didn't write that the bank had cleared him, either.

It hadn't done that.

The absence of an answer was not an answer in either direction.

I had to keep reminding myself.

My father poured himself more coffee.

"How did you feel when she confirmed the requests were declined?"

"Relieved."

"And now?"

"Still scared."

He accepted that without trying to improve it.

I looked at the folder.

"I keep thinking that if I had checked my accounts more carefully before the divorce, I might have noticed something."

"Maybe you would have noticed something," he said. "Maybe you wouldn't."

"I should have known what was happening with my own money."

"You should have been able to ask questions without feeling that you were betraying somebody."

His words landed harder than I expected.

I looked away.

During my marriage, I had sometimes treated financial questions as tests of loyalty.

If I asked why a payment had been made, I worried that I was accusing my husband.

If I asked why he needed access to an account, I worried that I was being difficult.

If he answered confidently, I often accepted the explanation because I wanted to believe we were on the same side.

I had never thought of those choices as dangerous.

Some of them might not have been.

But I had allowed discomfort to replace understanding.

That was the part I could no longer ignore.

I picked up my phone and opened the list of accounts I had secured.

One by one, I checked the status of the cards and the passwords.

Then I closed the applications.

I wasn't going to keep searching for a hidden answer inside screens that could only show me so much.

My father stood and began clearing the breakfast dishes.

I rose to help him.

"You don't have to do that," he said.

"I know."

I carried my plate to the sink anyway.

For a few minutes, we did something ordinary.

He washed.

I dried.

The plates clinked softly against one another.

It was a small, familiar routine, and I found comfort in it.

I didn't have to explain why I was quiet.

I didn't have to defend my decisions.

I didn't have to pretend I was feeling better than I was.

When we finished, I returned to the table and placed the bank notes inside the folder.

The folder was getting thicker.

I disliked what that represented.

But I liked knowing that the records were organized, that I had asked the questions I could ask, and that I hadn't allowed fear to turn an unknown into a certainty.

I wrote the date at the top of a fresh page.

Then I wrote down the bank's next steps.

Nothing more.

For the first time since the alerts had arrived, I could see a difference between waiting helplessly and waiting with a record of what had happened.

I couldn't force the answer to come.

I could make sure I was prepared when it did.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Wanted to Hear My Former Husband Explain the Numbers, but I Knew I Was Not Ready to Trust Whatever He Said

The bank called shortly before noon.
