Not an answer."

He nodded.

"That's still something."

I wanted to believe him.

I moved to another account.

This one held the credit card we had used for travel and larger purchases.

My husband had encouraged me to keep it active because it offered a higher limit.

He said it was useful to have available credit for emergencies.

I had agreed.

I remembered him sitting beside me on the sofa while we completed the application.

He had read the questions aloud.

I had entered the information.

We had laughed when the application asked about my annual income because he said the form made it sound as though we were applying for permission to be adults.

It had been a happy evening.

At least, that was how I remembered it.

I opened the account details.

My husband had been listed as an authorized user.

I checked whether that status had changed after the divorce proceedings.

It hadn't.

I called the card issuer and explained the situation.

The representative walked me through the available options.

I asked for the additional access to be removed and for the card to be replaced.

She confirmed the requests.

I wrote down the reference number.

Then I checked the transaction history.

There were ordinary purchases.

Restaurants.

Travel expenses.

A hotel charge.

A few expensive items I remembered buying.

Then there were several transactions I couldn't place.

One was connected to a service I didn't recognize.

Another appeared to have been made while I was at work.

I opened my calendar and checked the date.

I had been working that day.

My husband had been home.

That didn't prove anything.

I knew it didn't.

But I felt the old habit returning.

I wanted to explain the transaction before I even understood it.

Maybe he had bought something for me.

Maybe he had used the card for a shared expense.

Maybe I had forgotten.

I had forgotten things before.

I had forgotten birthdays, appointments, and where I had put my keys.

It was possible I had forgotten a purchase.

But I could no longer use that possibility to dismiss every question.

I wrote the transaction down.

Then I moved to the next one.

My father went to the kitchen and returned with a fresh cup of coffee.

He set it beside the notepad.

"You haven't stopped working since we got here."

"I don't know what else to do."

"You can take a break."

I shook my head.

"If I stop, I'll start thinking."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"You're already thinking."

I couldn't argue with that.

I rubbed my eyes.

The skin around them was sore from crying, and my head had begun to ache.

My father pushed the coffee closer.

"Drink it before it gets cold."

I took a sip.

It was stronger than I liked.

I drank it anyway.

We continued checking the accounts.

Some looked normal.

Others contained entries I needed to ask the banks about.

I did not find an explanation for the three enormous authorization attempts.

I also did not find proof that my husband had initiated them.

That distinction mattered.

I wrote it down at the top of the page.

Unconfirmed.

The word looked cold.

I needed it to stay that way.

For years, I had treated the feelings I had about my husband as evidence that I understood him.

When I felt loved, I assumed he was being honest.

When I felt anxious, I assumed I was overreacting.

When I felt suspicious, I searched for reasons to dismiss the suspicion.

My feelings had become a way of deciding which facts I was willing to see.

I didn't want to do that anymore.

I wanted the facts, even if they made me uncomfortable.

Especially if they made me uncomfortable.

Late in the afternoon, my father asked whether I had changed the password to the email account connected to my oldest bank account.

I checked.

I had changed the main password, but I hadn't reviewed every recovery option.

We went through them together.

I updated the recovery information and checked the account's recent security activity.

Nothing there gave me a clear answer about the attempted charges.

I saved the confirmation.

Then I sat back.

My father picked up the notepad.

"You've done a lot today."

"It doesn't feel like enough."

"It may not be everything. That doesn't make it nothing."

I looked at the list.

I had secured several accounts.

I had spoken to multiple representatives.

I had saved the alerts and written down the details.

I had stopped myself from calling my ex-husband in the middle of my fear.

Those were small things.

But they were real.

For the first time, I began to understand that protecting myself didn't require me to know the entire truth immediately.

It required me to stop making decisions as though the truth would hurt less if I ignored it.

I took the pen and underlined the word at the top of the page.

Unconfirmed.

Then I closed the banking app.

I wasn't finished.

But I had learned something important about the difference between a question and an answer.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: When My Father Asked Me to Look at the Dates Again, I Realized How Much I Had Forgotten About the Weeks Before Our Divorce

The first thing I checked was the savings account I had opened before I got married.
