4 – Three Enormous Requests Arrived Before I Could Catch My Breath, and My Father Finally Told Me What He Had Been Waiting For

I thought two alerts would be enough to ruin the rest of my day.

I was wrong again.

The first two banks had confirmed that the attempted transactions were blocked.

I had locked the cards, changed the passwords, and written down every detail the representatives had given me.

My father kept the notepad beside his coffee mug.

He had drawn a line beneath each entry.

The amounts looked worse when written in his careful handwriting.

I sat across from him, staring at the paper.

I kept trying to make the numbers fit into a story I could understand.

Perhaps someone had stolen my information months ago.

Perhaps the transactions were part of a larger fraud scheme.

Perhaps the timing had nothing to do with my divorce.

I wanted one of those possibilities to be true.

Not because any of them was harmless.

Because I couldn't bear the thought that the end of my marriage might have been followed by something even more deliberate.

My father didn't interrupt me.

He had finished his coffee and was reading the notes I had made about my accounts.

Every so often, he asked a question.

Which card had been replaced?

Which account still needed a new password?

Had I contacted the bank connected to my savings?

I answered as best I could.

Then my phone vibrated again.

I flinched.

My father looked up.

I picked up the phone and opened the alert.

For a second, the screen seemed to go out of focus.

I blinked and read it again.

An attempted charge for $118,000.

I stopped breathing.

The amount was so far beyond anything I could imagine spending that my mind refused to accept it.

I checked the notification details.

It was not a balance.

It was not a transfer between my accounts.

It was an attempted authorization.

Someone had tried to charge that amount.

I read the number one digit at a time.

One hundred and eighteen thousand dollars.

I looked toward my father.

He had already come around the table.

"Let me see."

I handed him the phone.

He studied the alert.

Then he placed the device carefully on the table between us.

"Don't touch anything else until we know which account this came through."

I nodded, though I wasn't sure I had understood him.

My heart was pounding so hard that I could feel it in my throat.

I called the bank.

The representative verified my identity and reviewed the attempted transaction.

She confirmed that it had not been approved.

I asked whether the account had been compromised.

She said the bank would need to investigate before making that determination.

I asked where the charge had originated.

She explained what information she could see and what would require a further review.

I wrote down the details.

My hand shook so badly that the numbers leaned across the page.

When the call ended, my father checked the notepad.

He didn't tell me to calm down.

He didn't say that everything would be fine.

He simply asked whether I had locked the card.

I confirmed that I had.

Then he told me to check the next account.

I opened the banking app.

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

No new message.

No warning.

I almost let myself believe the worst was over.

Then another notification appeared.

$232,000.

I stared at it.

The number looked like something taken from a business report, not something connected to my ordinary life.

I had never authorized a purchase anywhere near that amount.

I had never even considered buying anything that expensive.

I checked the card details.

I checked the time.

I checked the notification again, hoping I had somehow opened the wrong message.

I hadn't.

My father stood behind my chair.

He read the alert over my shoulder.

Neither of us spoke.

The kitchen seemed smaller than it had a few minutes earlier.

The same table.

The same refrigerator.

The same glass of water sitting beside my hand.

But the day had changed.

I called the bank again.

This time, I could barely get the words out in the right order.

I explained that I had received another attempted authorization and that I did not recognize it.

The representative asked me to confirm the amount.

I told her.

She put me on hold.

I watched the screen while I waited.

My father took the notepad and recorded the second large amount.

His handwriting remained steady.

That steadiness made me feel both safer and more frightened.

He was behaving as if he had expected the situation to become serious.

I couldn't understand why.

The representative returned and confirmed that the transaction had been declined.

She recommended that I secure the account and follow the bank's fraud procedures.

I agreed to everything she suggested.

By then, I had stopped asking whether the bank could tell me exactly who was responsible.

I wanted answers.

But I was beginning to understand that answers might take time.

And time was the one thing I suddenly felt I didn't have.

I ended the call.

My father asked whether the card had been locked.

I said yes.

He nodded and wrote down the confirmation.

Then my phone vibrated for the third time.

I didn't want to look.

That was the strange part.

I had spent the past several hours checking every message as soon as it arrived.

Now I was afraid of what the screen might show me.

I watched it light up on the table.

A new fraud alert.

I picked it up.

The attempted charge was $640,000.

For a moment, I couldn't understand the number.

I knew what the digits meant.

I knew how to read them.

But they belonged to a scale of money so far removed from my life that they seemed impossible.

Six hundred and forty thousand dollars.

I held the phone with both hands.

The three alerts sat in my mind beside one another.

One hundred and eighteen thousand.

Two hundred and thirty-two thousand.

Six hundred and forty thousand.

I added them without meaning to.

Nine hundred and ninety thousand dollars.

Nearly a million.

I looked at the screen until the numbers blurred.

My father walked around the table and stopped behind me.

He placed one hand on the back of my chair.

For a few seconds, he said nothing.

Then he spoke.

"That's it. Now we know this isn't something to brush aside."

I turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

He pulled out the chair beside mine and sat down.

"It means you keep every alert, every message, and every confirmation from the banks."

I swallowed.

"Do you know who's doing this?"

"No."

He answered without hesitation.

That honesty frightened me.

I had wanted him to tell me that he knew what was happening, that he had a name or an explanation, that he could somehow make the whole thing stop.

Instead, he gave me the truth.

He didn't know.

Neither did I.

All we had were three attempted charges and the fact that every one of them had been stopped.

I looked at the figures again.

"Why would anyone try to charge that much money?"

My father leaned forward.

"That's what we need to find out."

I wanted to ask whether he suspected my husband.

The question was already sitting between us.

But I couldn't make myself say it.

My father didn't force me to.

He reached for the notepad and turned it so I could see the three amounts written beneath one another.

Then he tapped the page.

"These are facts. Everything else is a question."

I looked at the paper.

For the first time, I understood why he had insisted on writing everything down.

If I let my fear fill in the missing pieces, I might start treating my suspicions as proof.

I might accuse the wrong person.

Or I might do what I had done throughout my marriage and explain away something that deserved to be examined.

I took the pen from the table.

Under the third amount, I wrote the time of the alert.

Then I saved a copy of the notification.

My father watched me finish.

"There he is," he said quietly.

I looked up at him.

"What?"

He nodded toward the notepad.

"The part of you that can still think when everything else feels like it's falling apart."

I stared at him.

I wanted to believe him.

I wanted to be that person.

But I was still sitting in his kitchen with swollen eyes, a marriage that had ended that morning, and nearly a million dollars in attempted charges on my phone.

I didn't feel brave.

I didn't feel clever.

I felt terrified.

My father placed the notepad beside my phone.

"You're going to take this one step at a time."

I looked down at the three numbers.

For the first time that day, I stopped trying to find an explanation that would make me feel better.

I had no proof of who was responsible.

I had no way of knowing whether the attempts would continue.

All I knew was that the bank had stopped them, my father was beside me, and I had to be careful about what I did next.

I put my phone on the table.

Then I drew a line beneath the final amount.

The numbers were still there.

So was the fear.

But I was no longer willing to pretend I hadn't seen them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: My Father Would Not Let Me Call My Ex-Husband, and the More We Checked, the Less I Trusted My Own Memories

I thought two alerts would be enough to ruin the rest of my day.
