Sometimes I withdrew. And sometimes I looked for a way to feel better without dealing with what had caused the problem.”

The counselor asked what he meant by that last part.

Ryan sat quietly for several seconds.

“The affair,” he said. “I was unhappy and lonely, but instead of talking honestly with my wife, I let myself become involved with someone else. I made choices that gave me temporary relief, and I ignored what they would cost.”

The room was quiet.

I felt the familiar ache in my chest.

It was difficult to hear him describe the affair plainly.

It was also difficult to remember how long I had waited for him to do it.

The counselor turned toward me.

“What comes up for you when you hear him say that?”

I folded my hands in my lap.

“I believe he understands more than he did at first.”

Ryan looked at me but didn't interrupt.

“But I still get angry,” I continued. “Sometimes I look at him and remember the harbor. I remember thinking I was bringing him the best surprise of his life, and then seeing him kiss someone else.”

My voice became unsteady.

I stopped and took a breath.

“I had our daughters with me. They were so little. I had imagined him meeting them properly, holding them, seeing how much they had changed.”

The counselor nodded gently.

“I had imagined us being a family again,” I said. “And in a few seconds, I felt foolish for believing that.”

“You weren't foolish,” she said.

“I know that in my head. But sometimes I still feel it.”

Ryan's hands were clasped tightly together.

“I never wanted you to feel foolish,” he said.

I turned toward him.

“I know you didn't plan that moment. I need him to understand that the responsibility for staying faithful belongs to him. I can't be the person who monitors him into behaving like a husband.”

The counselor nodded.

“That distinction matters.”

I looked at Ryan.

“If I have to watch you all the time, then I haven't rebuilt trust. I might not. Sometimes I won't know why I'm upset until later.”

“What should I do?” he asked.

“Listen if I want to talk. Give me space if I ask for it. Don't demand that I explain everything immediately.”

He nodded.

“And if I think I've done something that hurt you?”

“Ask me. Don't assume you know.”

The counselor smiled slightly.

“That is a practical place to start.”

The session ended without a breakthrough.

There were no tears of relief or sudden promises that changed everything.

We left with the same uncertainty we had brought in.

But the uncertainty felt different.

We were no longer pretending that a decision had to be made simply because the question was painful.

On the drive back, Ryan kept both hands on the steering wheel.

After several minutes, he said, “I was afraid you'd say you were done.”

“I've thought about it.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

“I might still decide I can't do this.”

“I know that too.”

I watched him carefully.

“Does that make you want to stop trying?”

“No.”

“Why?”

He was quiet for a long moment.

“Because trying is something I should have done before I hurt you. And because I still want to be the kind of husband you can trust, even if I don't get to decide what happens next.”

I looked out the window again.

I couldn't tell whether those words would remain true when the weeks became months and the work became less urgent.

But I could hear the difference between asking me to save him from his guilt and accepting that he had work to do.

When we arrived at Lauren's house, the twins were awake.

Ava was in Lauren's arms, and Mia was lying on a blanket, staring at a toy.

“They were good,” Lauren said. “Ava fussed a little, but Mia mostly watched me like she was judging my entire life.”

“That sounds like Mia,” I said.

Lauren laughed.

Ryan thanked her and took Ava while I picked up Mia.

On the drive home, the girls fell asleep.

I watched their faces in the rearview mirror.

They had no idea what had happened in the counselor's office.

They didn't know that their parents had been discussing boundaries, trust, and the possibility that our family might one day look different.

They only knew the warmth of the car, the steady movement beneath them, and the comfort of being held.

I wanted to protect them from every difficult thing.

But I was beginning to understand that protecting them didn't mean preserving a marriage at any cost.

It meant building a home where honesty mattered.

It meant showing them, when they were old enough to understand, that love did not require someone to abandon themselves.

That evening, Ryan washed the bottles while I folded the girls' clean clothes.

He put the small socks into pairs.

One pair was mismatched.

I noticed it and held them up.

“These don't go together.”

He looked at the socks.

“They're both pink.”

“They're different pinks.”

He studied them, then laughed quietly.

“Apparently, there are levels to this.”

“There are.”

He found the matching pair and set the others aside.

The moment was ordinary enough to hurt.

It reminded me that our life had always been made of small things.

Bottles.

Socks.

Meals.

Plans for weekends.

The affair had not erased those things.

But it had changed what they meant.

We could still share a house and care for our daughters. We could still laugh at mismatched socks.

None of that meant I had forgiven him.

None of it meant I hadn't.

It meant life was continuing while I figured out what I could live with.

After the girls were asleep, Ryan asked if I wanted tea.

I said yes.

He made it and placed my cup on the table.

Then he sat across from me.

“I know you don't owe me an answer,” he said. “But I want you to know I understand that wanting to stay married doesn't give me the right to ask you to stay.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

“Thank you for saying that.”

He nodded.

I wrapped both hands around the cup.

For once, the silence between us did not feel like a punishment.

It was simply silence.

And I was allowed to leave it that way.

*END PART 19**

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: The Family We Had to Choose Honestly

Our third counseling appointment took place on a gray Tuesday afternoon.
