Even before the affair.”

I stirred my coffee.

“Have you?”

He looked at me, unsure whether I was asking a question or challenging him.

“Have I what?”

“Seen it before now?”

He took a breath.

“Not clearly. I knew I avoided arguments, but I told myself I was keeping the peace.”

“And you thought that was the same as being honest?”

“No.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I didn't think about it that way.”

I leaned against the counter.

“Sometimes keeping the peace just means one person doesn't get to say what they really think.”

He looked down.

“I understand that better now.”

I wanted to tell him that I had spent years choosing my words carefully whenever he shut down. I wanted to remind him of the conversations I had abandoned because I didn't want another evening of silence.

But I had already told him those things.

I didn't need to prove my pain every time he began to understand it.

So I picked up my coffee and sat at the table.

Ryan made himself a cup and sat across from me.

For several minutes, we said nothing.

Then he asked, “What do you need from me today?”

I looked at him.

The question was simple.

It was also difficult to answer because I had become so used to thinking about what the house needed, what the girls needed, and what Ryan needed that my own answer didn't come immediately.

“I need you to take the girls for an hour this afternoon,” I said.

“Of course.”

“And I need you not to ask me afterward whether I had a good time or whether I feel better.”

He looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because I want to go out without having to turn it into a test of our marriage.”

He nodded slowly.

“Okay.”

I expected him to ask where I was going.

He didn't.

That afternoon, I left the house with my purse, my phone, and no diaper bag.

The absence of the bag felt strange.

For months, leaving the house had meant checking bottles, counting diapers, finding spare clothes, and making sure I had enough wipes.

This time, I only needed my keys.

I drove to a small café near the park and ordered a coffee.

Then I sat by the window and watched people walk past.

Some carried shopping bags.

Some pushed strollers.

One woman hurried along with a little boy holding her hand, his backpack bouncing against his shoulders.

Ordinary lives continued around me.

Nobody looking at me could have known that my husband had kissed another woman while I was carrying his daughters across a harbor parking lot.

Nobody could have known that I had spent weeks trying to decide whether the life I had believed in was still available to me.

I was grateful for that.

For an hour, I didn't have to explain anything.

I didn't have to make a decision.

I didn't even have to feel productive.

I drank my coffee while it was hot.

Then I walked through the park and sat on a bench near the path.

I thought about the woman I had been before the affair.

I had believed that being a good wife meant being patient, loyal, and willing to work through difficult seasons.

I still believed in patience.

I still believed in loyalty.

But I was beginning to understand that patience could become a hiding place if I used it to avoid admitting when something hurt me.

Loyalty could become an excuse if I treated my husband's choices as problems I had to solve.

And working through a difficult season required two people who were willing to face what had happened.

I had been willing to face it from the beginning.

Ryan was only now learning how.

When I returned home, the house was quiet.

I found Ryan on the living room rug with both girls.

Ava was lying on her back, studying her own hands. Mia was tucked against his chest.

The feeding notebook lay open on the coffee table.

He had recorded both bottles and their naps.

“How was it?” he asked.

I set my purse down.

“Fine.”

He looked at me for a second.

Then he nodded.

“Good.”

That was all.

He didn't ask whether I had thought about him.

He didn't ask whether I had missed the girls.

He didn't ask whether being away from him had made me realize I wanted to save our marriage.

I sat on the floor beside Ava.

She turned her head toward me and made a small, breathy sound.

I touched her cheek.

“I missed you,” I whispered.

Ryan looked down at Mia.

“I missed them too,” he said.

I glanced at him.

“You had them here.”

“I know. I just meant…”

He stopped himself.

I waited.

“I don't need to make everything about how I'm feeling,” he said.

I wasn't sure whether he had meant to say that aloud.

But I appreciated that he had noticed.

Later, after dinner, we talked about the next counseling appointment.

The counselor had asked us to think about what rebuilding trust would mean in practical terms.

Ryan had been given the task of considering what honesty looked like when nobody was asking questions.

I had been asked to think about the boundaries I needed in order to feel emotionally safe.

“I've been thinking about that,” I said.

He put his fork down.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Yes.”

I took a moment.

“I need you to tell me the truth the first time. Mia had kicked her blanket toward the foot of the bassinet.

I pulled it back into place.

For the first time in weeks, I didn't ask myself whether I could ever look at Ryan the way I had before.

That question belonged to a future I couldn't see.

Instead, I asked myself whether I had listened to my own feelings that day.

I had.

I had asked for an hour alone.

I had told Ryan what I needed.

I had let his response be his responsibility.

It was a small thing.

But it was mine.

*END PART 18**

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: What We Could Promise, and What We Couldn’t

By the end of that week, I had noticed something uncomfortable.
