And when you were angry or distant, I kept trying to get you to tell me that we might be okay."

I held Mia against my chest.

"Yes."

"I can see how that put more pressure on you."

I didn't answer immediately.

I wanted to hear what came next.

"I don't want to keep doing that," he said. "I need to deal with my own feelings about what happened instead of asking you to manage them."

I looked down at Mia.

Her eyes were half closed.

"That would help," I said.

He nodded.

"I know it doesn't change anything that happened."

"No, it doesn't."

"I just wanted you to know I'm thinking about it."

I appreciated that he had told me without asking for a response.

I did not tell him that I was proud of him.

I did not tell him that it made me feel closer to him.

Those things might become true one day.

They were not true yet.

Instead, I finished feeding Mia and carried her upstairs.

The next several days gave me small chances to notice what Ryan did when I wasn't reminding him.

He began taking responsibility for the morning routine.

He checked the diaper bag before we left the house.

He washed bottles without waiting for the sink to fill.

When one of the girls cried in the middle of the night, he sometimes woke before I did.

He did not always get everything right.

One morning, he put Mia's clean clothes in Ava's drawer.

Another time, he warmed a bottle and forgot to check the temperature until I reminded him.

But he corrected his mistakes without making them my fault.

That mattered.

I didn't need him to become perfect.

I needed him to be willing to learn, to listen, and to take responsibility for what belonged to him.

One evening, I found him sitting at the kitchen table with a piece of paper in front of him.

He had written down the girls' feeding times and the days of their next appointments.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Trying to make sure I know what's coming up."

I looked at the page.

The handwriting was uneven, but the details were correct.

"You could use the calendar on the refrigerator," I said.

"I know. I wanted to write it down first."

I nodded.

He placed the paper beside the feeding notebook.

For a moment, I felt a familiar ache.

I had spent months keeping track of every small detail because I thought it was my responsibility.

Now Ryan was learning to carry some of that information himself.

I wished he had been more involved before the harbor.

But I also knew that resenting every new effort would not help me decide what I wanted.

I could acknowledge the work without pretending it repaired the marriage.

That evening, we sat together after the twins went to sleep.

Ryan asked whether I wanted to talk about the counseling session.

I thought about it.

"Not tonight," I said.

"Okay."

He reached for the remote and turned on the television at a low volume.

We watched a program neither of us paid much attention to.

At one point, something on the screen made me laugh.

Ryan glanced at me.

I noticed the look.

He seemed happy to hear me laugh, but he didn't use it as an opening to ask whether things were getting better.

He turned back toward the television.

I relaxed a little.

That was the kind of change I needed.

Not a grand gesture.

Not a speech.

A moment in which I could be myself without feeling that my emotions were being measured for signs of forgiveness.

A few days later, we had another difficult conversation.

I was folding laundry when Ryan asked whether I had thought about what I wanted our future to look like.

I stopped folding.

"Why do you ask?"

"Because I don't want to assume we're moving toward staying together just because we went to counseling."

I looked at him.

"That's a fair question."

He sat on the edge of the sofa.

"I know we haven't decided anything. I just want to understand where your head is."

I placed a folded blanket in the basket.

"My head changes from one day to the next."

He nodded.

"That makes sense."

"Some days, I look at you and remember the life we had. Other days, I remember the harbor and wonder whether I could ever feel the same way about you again."

He listened.

"I don't want to make a decision while I'm still trying to understand what happened," I continued. "But I also don't want to promise you that waiting will lead to forgiveness."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

He paused.

"I think I'm beginning to."

I looked at him carefully.

He continued.

"I want us to stay together. But I know wanting that doesn't mean you have to want the same thing."

I let out a slow breath.

"That's something I need you to remember."

"I will."

I sat beside the basket.

For a moment, I felt the urge to soften my answer.

I wanted to tell him that I still loved him.

I wanted to tell him that I had not given up.

But I had already told him those things.

I did not need to repeat them every time he was afraid.

"I don't want you to spend every day waiting for me to decide," I said. "I want you to live here, take care of your daughters, and do the work you need to do regardless of what I choose."

He nodded.

"I can do that."

"Then do it."

He looked down.

"Okay."

The conversation ended without an embrace.

It ended without a promise.

For once, I did not feel that we had failed because we hadn't found a comforting way to finish.

We had spoken honestly.

That was enough for that evening.

The following week, we returned to counseling.

This time, Ryan spoke about how he had used the distance between us to avoid difficult conversations.

He said he had convinced himself that he could deal with his confusion later.

The counselor asked him what he would do differently when he felt disconnected or unhappy in the future.

He thought for a while before answering.

"I need to tell Claire that something is wrong before I start making decisions on my own."

The counselor asked what that would look like in practice.

Ryan said he would need to speak honestly, even when he was afraid of an argument.

He would need to stop treating silence as a solution.

He would need to accept that difficult conversations were part of being married.

I listened.

Some of what he said made sense.

Some of it sounded easier to say in a quiet office than to do in a real life filled with tired mornings, crying babies, and competing needs.

I knew the difference would become clear over time.

When it was my turn to speak, I told the counselor that I was beginning to feel less responsible for managing Ryan's emotions.

I said that I still loved him, but that I no longer believed love alone could make our marriage safe.

The counselor asked what safety meant to me.

I thought about the question.

"It means I don't have to guess what my husband is hiding," I said.

"It means I can ask a hard question and get an honest answer. It means I don't have to make myself smaller to keep the peace."

Ryan sat quietly beside me.

I continued.

"And it means I can be angry without being told that my anger is preventing us from moving forward."

The counselor turned toward him.

"What do you hear?"

Ryan took a breath.

"I hear that I need to stop expecting Claire to move at my pace."

I looked at him.

It was a good answer.

I hoped he would remember it when the room was no longer there to guide us.

After the appointment, we walked to the car together.

The afternoon was bright, and the air was warm.

Ryan opened the door for me.

I got in and buckled my seat belt.

He sat behind the steering wheel but didn't start the engine immediately.

"How do you feel about today?" he asked.

I considered the question.

"I think we're learning how to talk about things without trying to end the conversation as quickly as possible."

He nodded.

"I think so, too."

"That doesn't mean I know what I want yet."

"I know."

I looked at him.

"And I don't want to keep having to remind you."

He lowered his eyes for a moment.

"You're right."

He started the car.

We drove to Lauren's house to pick up the twins.

When she brought them to the door, Ava was awake and Mia was asleep.

I took Ava from her.

Ryan took Mia.

Lauren looked at us both.

"How did it go?"

I smiled faintly.

"All right."

She nodded.

"That's good."

I knew she wanted to ask more.

She didn't.

On the drive home, I watched Ryan check the mirror to make sure Mia's head was supported.

He adjusted the blanket around her legs at a red light.

Ava made a small noise from her seat.

I turned to look at her.

For a moment, I felt something close to peace.

Not because I had decided to stay.

Not because I had forgiven Ryan.

Because I was beginning to understand that I did not have to make every day a verdict on our marriage.

I could notice what he did.

I could notice what I felt.

I could keep asking for what I needed.

And I could let time show me whether the changes were real.

When we got home, Ryan carried the twins inside.

I followed with the diaper bag.

The family photograph still hung near the hallway.

I glanced at it as I passed.

The people in the picture had believed their future was settled.

I no longer believed that any future was guaranteed.

But uncertainty did not mean I had to stop living.

I put the diaper bag away, washed my hands, and went to help Ryan prepare the girls' bottles.

Tomorrow would bring more questions.

For tonight, there were two babies to feed.

And we both knew what to do.

*END PART 16**

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The Things He Had to Learn Without Being Asked

The day after counseling, I woke with a headache.
