I don't want to reopen it."

I held his gaze.

"Then I need you to be clear about that."

"I will."

I nodded toward the phone.

"If she keeps contacting you, I don't want you hiding it because you think I'll be upset."

"I won't."

"And I don't want you keeping a conversation going just because you're uncomfortable telling someone no."

He took a breath.

"I understand."

I watched him put the phone in his pocket.

The tension in my chest did not disappear.

But I was proud of myself for not reaching for the device.

I had seen the name.

I had asked what I needed to ask.

I had let Ryan decide what he would do with the message.

That did not mean I had to trust his decision without question.

It meant I was trying not to become someone I didn't recognize.

Later that evening, I told Ryan that seeing Simone's name had frightened me.

He sat at the table while I prepared the girls' bottles.

"I understand why," he said.

"I don't want every notification to make me wonder whether you're hiding something."

"I don't want that either."

"Then I need you to understand how much work it's going to take for me to feel differently."

He nodded.

"I know I can't tell you to stop being afraid."

I looked at him.

"Good."

He seemed surprised by my answer.

I continued.

"I don't want to spend the rest of my life checking your phone. I don't want to demand that you prove where you are every hour. I want to be in a marriage where I don't feel I have to do those things."

"I want that, too."

"Then the goal can't be making me stop asking questions. It has to be building a life where I don't feel I need to ask them all the time."

He was quiet for a moment.

"That makes sense."

I turned off the bottle warmer.

"That's what I need you to remember."

The first counseling appointment arrived on a gray morning.

I had slept badly.

Mia had woken twice, and Ava had refused to settle until nearly dawn.

By the time I got downstairs, I felt as though I had spent the night walking through water.

Ryan was making breakfast.

He had packed the diaper bag in case the girls needed to come with us, though Lauren had offered to watch them.

We decided to leave the girls with her.

I wanted to be able to focus without worrying about bottles or naps.

Lauren arrived just before we were due to leave.

She kissed the twins and told me not to rush back.

Then Ryan and I got into the car.

We didn't speak much on the drive.

The sky was overcast, and the road was wet from overnight rain.

I watched the windshield wipers move back and forth.

I wondered what I would say when we sat down.

I wondered whether I would cry.

I wondered whether Ryan would finally explain something that made the whole situation easier to understand.

I knew better than to expect that.

When we arrived, the building looked ordinary.

There was a small sign beside the entrance and a waiting room with two chairs near the window.

I sat down.

Ryan sat beside me.

We were close enough that our knees almost touched.

Neither of us moved closer.

When the counselor called our names, I stood.

Ryan followed me into the office.

The room had a desk, a sofa, and three chairs arranged in a loose circle.

A small plant sat on the windowsill.

The counselor introduced herself and asked what had brought us there.

Ryan looked at me.

I looked at him.

For a moment, I thought he might begin by explaining the affair.

Instead, I spoke first.

"My husband had a relationship with another woman while he was away on a long assignment. I found out when I brought our three-month-old twin daughters to the harbor to surprise him."

The words came out clearly.

I hadn't planned them.

But once I started, I couldn't stop.

"I saw him kiss her. He hadn't told me about the relationship. I had been waiting for him to come home, and I thought I was bringing our daughters to meet their father after a long separation."

My throat tightened.

"I didn't know there was anything wrong until I saw it."

The counselor listened without interrupting.

Then she asked Ryan what he wanted her to understand.

He took a breath.

"I was unfaithful to my wife. I made choices that hurt her, and I hid them because I didn't want to face what I was doing."

I looked at him.

It was the first time I had heard him say the whole thing in front of someone else without softening it.

He continued.

"I ended the relationship after Claire found out. I want to repair our marriage, but I know I can't expect her to trust me just because I want that."

The counselor nodded.

Then she asked me what I needed.

I had written the answer in my notebook.

But sitting there, with Ryan beside me, I realized that the words still frightened me.

"I need honesty," I said.

"I need to know that if something is wrong, he will tell me instead of waiting for me to discover it."

I paused.

"I need him to take responsibility without asking me to reassure him that we're going to be okay. And I need time to decide whether I can stay in this marriage."

The counselor asked Ryan how he felt hearing that.

He looked at me before answering.

"I understand why she needs those things."

The counselor waited.

Ryan took another breath.

"I also know I can't decide how long it should take her to trust me again."

I looked down at my hands.

The words sounded right.

I was not ready to treat them as proof.

The counselor asked us to describe what had changed in our relationship since the harbor.

I spoke about the silence between us.

I spoke about how difficult it had become to share ordinary moments without wondering whether they meant more than they seemed to mean.

I explained that I could appreciate Ryan caring for the twins without feeling ready to forgive him.

I said that sometimes I felt guilty for being angry when he was trying to help.

The counselor listened.

Then she asked why I felt guilty.

I thought about it.

"Because he's trying," I said.

"Does his effort mean you owe him forgiveness?"

I shook my head.

"No."

"Then why do you feel responsible for making him feel that his effort is working?"

The question settled over me.

I didn't have an immediate answer.

Ryan shifted in his chair.

I looked at him.

"I think I've been trying to make things easier for everyone," I said. "For the girls. For Ryan. For myself."

The counselor asked whether making things easier had always been my responsibility.

I thought about the months Ryan had been away.

I thought about the feeding notebook.

I thought about how quickly I had learned to do everything alone.

Then I thought about the harbor.

"I don't think I knew how much I was carrying until I found out what he had been doing," I said.

Ryan lowered his eyes.

The counselor turned toward him.

"What do you hear in that?"

He was quiet for a long time.

"I hear that she was trying to hold our family together while I was making choices that put it at risk."

My eyes filled with tears.

I looked toward the window.

It was not a perfect answer.

But it was the first time I had heard him describe the imbalance between us without immediately talking about his own regret.

The appointment continued for another half hour.

We talked about boundaries, honesty, and the difference between rebuilding trust and demanding forgiveness.

The counselor did not tell us whether we should stay married.

She did not promise that we could repair what had happened.

She helped us name the work in front of us.

When the appointment ended, Ryan and I walked back to the car.

The rain had stopped.

The pavement was still wet, and the air smelled fresh.

He opened the passenger door for me.

I got in.

He walked around to the driver's side.

For a moment, we sat without starting the engine.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

I looked out the window.

"Tired."

He nodded.

"Me too."

I turned toward him.

"I think it was worth going."

"Me too."

"That doesn't mean I feel better about what happened."

"I know."

I watched him for a moment.

Then I looked forward again.

"Let's go get our girls."

He started the car.

We drove to Lauren's house.

For the first time in days, I was not trying to decide whether Ryan's words meant he had changed.

I was simply thinking about the twins.

I wanted to hold them.

I wanted to hear their small sounds.

I wanted to return to the ordinary work of being their mother.

And when we arrived, Lauren opened the door with Mia in her arms and Ava asleep against her shoulder.

"Everybody survived," she said with a smile.

I laughed.

"That's good to hear."

I took Ava from her.

Ryan took Mia.

For a moment, we stood in Lauren's doorway with one baby each.

Nothing had been fixed.

But we were both there.

And for that afternoon, that was enough.

*END PART 15**

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: After Our First Counseling Session, I Stopped Waiting for One Perfect Apology and Started Watching the Choices Ryan Made Every Day

The appointment was scheduled for the following week.
