About the girls. About what I was doing."

"And you kept doing it?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

I felt the familiar ache rise in my chest.

"Did you tell yourself you would stop later?"

"Sometimes."

"Did you tell yourself it wasn't serious?"

He took a slow breath.

"Yes."

I looked down at the notebook.

Those answers were painful, but I preferred them to another vague apology.

"Why did you think you could keep both parts of your life separate?" I asked.

"I don't know."

"Did you think I wouldn't find out?"

He hesitated.

"I didn't think clearly about what would happen."

"That isn't the same as answering me."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I think I told myself that if I didn't make a decision, I wouldn't have to face what I was doing."

I looked at him.

"And you left me to live in the version of our marriage where nothing was wrong."

He lowered his eyes.

"Yes."

The room felt very quiet.

Ava made a small sound.

Ryan rocked her gently.

I had wanted answers, but hearing them did not bring relief.

There was no hidden explanation that made his choices understandable in a way that would make them acceptable.

He had avoided the truth because he did not want to face it.

I had been left to carry the consequences of a decision I hadn't made.

"Thank you for answering," I said.

He looked surprised.

"I know that wasn't easy."

"I should have told you the truth before you had to ask."

"Yes."

He nodded.

I closed the notebook.

"That's enough for today."

He looked as if he wanted to ask another question.

Then he stopped.

I took Ava from him and carried her to the living room.

I needed time to think about what he had said.

Not because I was searching for an excuse.

Because I wanted to understand what his answer meant for the future.

If he had avoided the truth because he did not want to face consequences, then the question was not only whether he regretted the affair.

It was whether he could learn to face the truth before someone else forced him to.

That would take more than a conversation.

It would take behavior I could see over time.

Later that afternoon, Ryan brought up counseling again.

"I found a few places that offer appointments," he said. "I haven't called anyone."

I looked up from the changing table.

"How did you choose them?"

"I searched for counselors who work with couples dealing with infidelity."

I finished fastening Mia's clean clothes.

"Did you check whether they have evening appointments?"

"One of them does."

"That would help with the girls."

"I thought so."

I studied him.

"Are you trying to arrange this because you think I'll be more likely to stay if you do?"

He looked uncomfortable.

"I hope you'll stay. I won't pretend I don't."

"Then how do I know this isn't another way of trying to get the outcome you want?"

He took a moment before answering.

"I don't think you can know yet."

That answer surprised me.

He continued.

"I can tell you why I'm doing it, but you have to decide whether you believe me. I don't think I can demand that you trust my reasons right now."

I looked at him for a long moment.

It was the first time he had acknowledged that his intentions were not something he could simply announce and expect me to accept.

"All right," I said.

"Would you consider making an appointment?"

"I'll think about it."

He nodded.

"Okay."

He did not ask again.

That evening, I called Lauren.

I told her about the questions I had asked Ryan and the answers he had given.

She listened while I explained how he had described avoiding the truth because he did not want to face what he was doing.

"What do you think about that?" she asked.

"I think it sounds honest."

"Do you believe him?"

"I believe that's what he thinks happened. I don't know whether I understand all of it yet."

"That's a reasonable place to be."

I sat on the sofa and watched Ryan fold a blanket beside the girls.

"Would you go to counseling if you were me?" I asked.

Lauren took a breath.

"I can't decide that for you."

"I know."

"But I think it could help you understand what you want, even if the answer is that you don't want to stay."

I looked down at my hands.

"I don't want him to think that agreeing to go means I've forgiven him."

"Then tell him that."

"I have told him things like that a hundred times."

"Then tell him one more time, and watch whether he respects it."

I smiled faintly.

"You make everything sound simple."

"No. I just think the next step doesn't have to answer every question."

After we hung up, I sat quietly.

The next step did not have to answer every question.

I repeated the sentence to myself.

It made the idea of counseling feel less like a commitment to save the marriage and more like a chance to understand what had happened between us.

I was still uncertain.

But I was willing to consider it.

The following morning, I told Ryan that I would agree to one appointment.

He was standing by the kitchen counter, preparing a bottle.

He looked at me carefully.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes. One appointment."

He nodded.

"Okay."

"And I want you to understand why I'm agreeing."

"I'm listening."

"I'm not doing this to promise that we'll stay married. I'm doing it because I need help sorting through what happened, and I don't want us to keep having the same conversation in the kitchen."

He set the bottle down.

"I understand."

"I also need you to be honest in that room. Not just with me. With yourself."

He nodded.

"I will."

I took a breath.

"We'll see how the first appointment goes."

"Thank you for considering it."

I didn't tell him that I was grateful he had looked for someone.

I wasn't ready to turn the decision into reassurance.

Instead, I picked up the girls' feeding notebook and wrote the appointment details on a fresh page once we had chosen a date.

The ink looked ordinary.

The page was ordinary.

But writing down that appointment felt different from writing down a bottle time or a nap.

It was a small step toward facing the part of our lives that neither of us could solve by folding laundry and pretending the house was quiet.

I closed the notebook.

For the first time, I felt that I was making a decision because it might help me.

Not because Ryan wanted it.

Not because I was afraid of losing him.

And not because I believed one appointment would repair a marriage.

I was doing it because I deserved to understand what had happened to my life.

That was reason enough.

*END PART 14**

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: As Our First Counseling Appointment Approached, I Began to Understand That Rebuilding Trust Would Require More Than Saying We Wanted to Stay Together

I didn't answer Ryan about counseling the next morning.
