I can love you and still be angry. I can love you and still decide that I can't live in a marriage where I don't feel safe."

He stared at his hands.

"I know."

"I don't think you do yet."

He looked up.

"I want to understand."

"Then don't treat my love as proof that everything will be okay."

He nodded slowly.

I picked up the socks again, mostly because I needed something to do with my hands.

"Love isn't the only question anymore, Ryan."

"What else is there?"

"Whether I can trust you. Whether I can believe what you tell me. Whether I can go through an ordinary day without wondering what you're keeping from me."

He looked as though he wanted to interrupt.

Then he stopped himself.

I appreciated that.

"I want to be able to answer your questions honestly," he said.

"You need to do more than want that."

"I know."

I folded a small shirt.

"That means you tell me the truth even when you think it will make me angry. It means you don't hide behind the fact that you feel ashamed. It means you don't decide for me what I can handle knowing."

He nodded.

"All right."

"And it means I get to decide what I need without you treating every boundary like a punishment."

"I haven't thought of it that way."

"Well, I need you to start."

He sat quietly.

I finished folding the shirt and put it into the basket.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, "I don't want to lose you."

I felt the familiar pull of sympathy.

I could see the fear in his face.

I knew what it was like to imagine losing the person you had planned your life around.

But I had been carrying my own fear since the harbor, and I could not set it aside just because his had finally become visible.

"I don't want to lose our family either," I said.

He swallowed.

"Then I want to do whatever it takes to fix this."

I looked at him.

"You can't fix it by deciding how it should end."

He frowned slightly.

"I don't understand."

"You keep talking about fixing things as if there's a point where you do enough, and I become the person I was before."

He didn't answer.

"But I'm not that person anymore," I continued. "I know something now that I didn't know before. Even if we stay together, I can't go back to not knowing it."

He looked down.

"I understand."

I hoped he was beginning to.

I didn't want to spend the rest of our marriage trying to recreate a version of myself who had never seen him kiss Simone.

That woman had trusted her husband.

She had waited for him to come home.

She had imagined the twins meeting their father at the harbor and had expected the day to become one of their favorite family stories.

I couldn't become her again.

Perhaps I didn't need to.

Perhaps the question was whether two people could build something honest after one of them had broken what they had.

I didn't know the answer.

And I was beginning to accept that not knowing was not a failure.

That afternoon, Ryan took the girls into the nursery so I could rest.

I lay on the bed and listened to the quiet.

I could hear him moving around the room.

A drawer opened.

A bottle was placed on the changing table.

One of the girls began to fuss, then settled.

I closed my eyes.

For the first time in days, I did not feel the need to listen for every sound.

I trusted that he could take care of them.

That trust was small and specific.

It didn't extend to every part of our marriage.

But it was real.

When I woke, the light in the bedroom had changed.

I checked the time and sat up quickly.

I had slept for nearly an hour.

I felt guilty for a moment, then reminded myself that I had needed the rest.

Ryan was sitting in the living room with Mia asleep in his arms.

Ava was in her crib.

He looked up when I entered.

"Feel better?"

"Yes."

"Good."

I sat across from him.

He glanced toward the window.

"I've been thinking about getting some help."

I waited.

"Not just for the babies," he added. "I mean someone we can talk to about what happened."

I felt cautious.

"What kind of help?"

"A marriage counselor. Or someone who can help us figure out whether there's anything left to work with."

I looked at him.

Part of me wanted to dismiss the idea.

I was tired of plans.

I was tired of promises.

I was tired of hearing that Ryan wanted to do something different and wondering whether it would last longer than the conversation.

But I also knew that we were struggling to speak to each other without falling into the same painful patterns.

"Are you asking me to go with you?" I said.

"I'm asking whether you'd consider it."

"Why now?"

He took a breath.

"Because I don't think I know how to repair this on my own. And I don't want to keep asking you to tell me what to do."

That answer surprised me.

It was not perfect.

It did not undo anything.

But it acknowledged a problem I had been trying to explain to him for days.

"I'll think about it," I said.

He nodded.

"That's fair."

"I'm not agreeing to go yet."

"I understand."

"And if I do agree, it doesn't mean I'm promising to stay married."

"I know."

I studied his face.

I wanted to see whether he was merely accepting my words because he thought they were the right words.

I couldn't tell.

So I let the conversation end there.

That evening, we fed the girls and took turns getting them ready for bed.

Ryan read a short picture book aloud, even though the girls were still too young to understand most of it.

He gave each of them a kiss on the forehead.

I watched from the doorway.

When he finished, he looked toward me.

"Would you like me to stay with you for a while tonight?"

I considered the question.

"Not tonight."

He nodded.

"Okay."

There was no argument.

No wounded expression designed to make me reconsider.

He turned off the nursery light and followed me into the hallway.

At the bedroom door, he stopped.

"Good night, Claire."

"Good night."

He went to the guest room.

I went into our bedroom and sat on the edge of the bed.

I still loved him.

That truth hurt more than I expected.

It would have been easier if the affair had erased every good memory.

It would have been easier if I could look at Ryan and feel nothing but anger.

But I remembered the man who had sat beside me in the hospital after the twins were born.

I remembered him holding my hand when I was afraid.

I remembered the years when we had built a life without wondering whether we were telling each other the truth.

Those memories were real.

So was the kiss at the harbor.

I couldn't make one truth cancel the other.

I turned off the lamp and lay down.

I didn't know whether our marriage would survive.

But I knew that if it did, it would have to become something more honest than the marriage I had believed we had.

Love could be part of that.

It could not be the only part.

*END PART 13**

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: When I Began Asking Questions About Our Future, I Realized I Needed Answers That Went Beyond Ryan’s Regret

The next morning, I woke to the sound of Ryan talking to the twins.
