I said. "That isn't the same as everything being okay between us."

He nodded.

"I understand."

I opened the door.

For a moment, I looked back at the three of them.

Mia had her cheek against his shoulder.

Ava was waving one arm in the air.

They looked like a family.

They were a family.

Whatever happened to Ryan and me, that truth would remain.

I stepped outside and closed the door.

The drive to Lauren's house felt longer than usual.

I kept glancing at my phone at stoplights.

I wondered whether Ryan had remembered the bottles.

I wondered whether Mia would cry.

I wondered whether Ava would fall asleep.

Then I caught myself.

I had left him with a feeding schedule, clean bottles, diapers, and everything else he needed.

He could handle an afternoon.

I needed to let him handle it.

When I arrived, Lauren opened the door before I had finished knocking.

She wrapped her arms around me.

I stood there longer than I meant to.

I hadn't realized how badly I needed someone to hold me without asking me to explain anything.

"You look exhausted," she said.

"I am."

"Come inside."

Her house smelled like coffee and toast.

There were shoes by the stairs and a sweater thrown over the back of the sofa.

The ordinary mess made me feel strangely comfortable.

Lauren led me into the kitchen and poured me a cup of coffee.

I sat at the table.

For a few minutes, we talked about nothing important.

She told me about a problem at work.

I told her that Ava had started sneezing whenever I changed her clothes.

Lauren laughed.

"Maybe she doesn't like the wardrobe you've chosen for her."

"She has strong opinions already."

"She gets that from you."

I smiled.

Then the smile faded.

Lauren reached across the table and touched my hand.

"You don't have to pretend you're fine here."

I looked down at our hands.

"I don't know how to talk about it without feeling like I'm making everything worse."

"Talking about what happened doesn't make it worse."

"It makes it real."

"It is real, Claire."

I nodded.

I knew that.

But I had spent days moving through the house as if I could keep the affair from spreading into every corner of my life.

I had washed bottles.

Folded blankets.

Made tea.

I had done everything except sit still long enough to admit how deeply the discovery had shaken me.

"I keep thinking about that moment at the harbor," I said.

Lauren listened.

"I can see him standing there. I can see her hand on his chest. I remember how normal they looked together."

My voice broke.

"I was standing there with our daughters, and I felt like the only person who didn't know what was happening."

Lauren squeezed my hand.

"I'm sorry."

"I keep asking myself whether there were signs."

"Were there?"

"I don't know."

"Then don't force yourself to find them now."

I looked at her.

"What if I missed something important?"

"Claire, you were taking care of two newborn babies while your husband was away. You were trying to keep your life together. You weren't supposed to spend every day investigating him."

I felt tears slip down my cheeks.

I wiped them away.

"I keep thinking I should have known."

"Why?"

"Because I'm his wife."

Lauren leaned back slightly.

"Being married to someone doesn't make you responsible for every choice they make in secret."

I stared at the coffee in front of me.

The sentence settled into a place inside me that had been aching for days.

I had been treating the affair as a failure of my judgment.

As if I had somehow allowed it to happen by being tired, busy, or too trusting.

But Ryan had made his choices.

I had not chosen for him.

I had not asked him to hide things.

I had not asked him to kiss someone else.

I had simply believed that our marriage was what we had agreed it would be.

"I don't know whether I can forgive him," I admitted.

"You don't have to know today."

"What if I never can?"

"Then you'll deal with that if it happens."

I let out a slow breath.

Lauren wasn't promising that everything would work out.

She wasn't telling me to leave Ryan or to stay with him.

She was giving me permission to exist without an answer.

That was what I needed.

My phone buzzed on the table.

I picked it up quickly.

It was a message from Ryan.

The girls are both fed. Ava fell asleep on my chest. Mia is watching me like she knows I'm doing something wrong.

I stared at the screen.

Then I laughed.

A second message arrived.

I think she just wants the bottle. I'll stop blaming her for my poor parenting skills.

I smiled through my tears.

For a moment, I wanted to send him a heart.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Then I put the phone down and took another sip of coffee.

I didn't need to make the moment mean more than it did.

Ryan was caring for the girls.

He was telling me how things were going.

That was good.

It was also simply what a father should do.

Lauren glanced at my phone.

"Everything okay?"

"Yeah. The girls are fine."

"Good."

I put the phone back in my bag.

We spent the rest of the morning talking.

Sometimes I cried.

Sometimes we laughed.

Sometimes we sat quietly, and Lauren let me look out her kitchen window at the small garden behind her house.

When I finally stood to leave, I felt lighter.

Not healed.

Not certain.

Just lighter.

I drove home without checking my phone at every stoplight.

When I opened the front door, I heard Ryan speaking softly from the living room.

"That's right, Ava. You tell me exactly what you think of this situation."

I stepped into the room.

He was sitting on the sofa with Ava in his arms.

Mia was asleep in her crib.

Ryan looked up.

"Hey."

"Hey."

"How was Lauren?"

"Good."

He nodded.

"Good."

Ava turned her face toward my voice.

I went over and kissed her forehead.

"Did you have a good afternoon with Daddy?"

She responded with a tiny sound.

Ryan smiled.

"She was very critical of my bottle technique."

"She has high standards."

"I noticed."

I sat beside him.

For a few minutes, we watched Ava move her hands.

Then Ryan asked, "Did you get what you needed from your visit?"

The question was gentle.

I appreciated that he didn't ask what Lauren had said about him.

"I think so," I answered.

He nodded.

"I'm glad."

I looked at him.

"She reminded me that I'm not responsible for what you chose to do."

His face changed.

"I know you're not."

"I needed to hear it from someone else."

"I'm sorry you ever felt responsible."

I believed he was sorry.

But I also knew that his regret could not undo the shame I had carried since the harbor.

"I don't want to keep blaming myself," I said.

"You shouldn't."

"And I don't want to feel like I have to take care of you while I'm trying to figure out what I feel."

He lowered his eyes.

"I don't want that either."

"Then if I'm having a bad day, let me have a bad day. Don't ask me to reassure you that we're going to be okay."

He nodded.

"All right."

I watched Ava reach toward the collar of his shirt.

Ryan gently moved her hand away from his mouth.

"I'll try to remember that."

"That's all I'm asking for right now."

We sat together until Ava began to fuss.

Ryan stood and carried her toward the nursery.

I watched him go.

I felt a small ache of gratitude that he had taken care of the girls while I was away.

I also felt a deep sadness that something so ordinary had become something I needed to notice.

Both feelings were true.

That evening, after the twins were asleep, I found Ryan in the kitchen rinsing the bottles.

He looked up when I entered.

"Do you want me to make you something to eat?"

"I'm okay."

"There's soup left."

"I'll have some."

He warmed it for me.

I sat at the table while he placed the bowl in front of me.

We didn't talk about the harbor.

We didn't talk about Simone.

We didn't discuss whether our marriage could survive.

We ate soup and talked about the girls.

It wasn't a reconciliation.

It wasn't a promise.

It was one quiet meal in a house where we were both trying to learn what came next.

When I finished, Ryan took my bowl to the sink.

I stood beside him.

"Thank you for taking care of them today."

He looked at me.

"Of course."

"I needed the time away."

"I'm glad you went."

I nodded.

Then I dried my hands and turned off the kitchen light.

As we walked toward the hallway, I glanced at the family photograph on the wall.

I still didn't know what our future would look like.

But I understood something I hadn't understood at the harbor.

I could protect my daughters without carrying every burden alone.

I could ask for help without pretending the problem was smaller than it was.

And I could let Ryan be their father without deciding, before I was ready, whether I could trust him as my husband again.

For now, I was going to keep making those distinctions.

One day at a time.

One honest conversation at a time.

And one small decision at a time.

*END PART 12**

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: When Ryan Asked Whether I Still Loved Him, I Realized That Love Was No Longer the Only Question I Needed to Answer

Two mornings later, I decided to visit Lauren.
