You understand that I'm upset. That's not the same thing."

He looked down again.

I could see him searching for something to say.

For once, I didn't help him find it.

"I don't know how to fix this," he admitted.

"Neither do I."

Ava began to fuss.

Ryan rocked her gently, moving from one foot to the other.

She quieted after a few seconds.

I watched his hand move across her back.

I wanted to be comforted by the sight.

Instead, I wondered how many times he had held her while keeping a secret from me.

I hated that thought as soon as it appeared.

A baby should not become evidence in an argument between her parents.

Ava had done nothing wrong.

Neither had Mia.

I took the bottle from the table and handed it to Ryan.

"Feed her while it's warm."

He sat down and tucked a small cloth beneath her chin.

I picked up Mia from the nursery and brought her into the kitchen.

Soon, both girls were eating, and the only sounds were the soft sucking of their bottles and the occasional creak of Ryan's chair.

It could have been any morning in our house.

That was the strange part.

The world had changed for me, but the ordinary things kept happening.

The girls still needed feeding.

The laundry still needed folding.

The sink still held two plates from the night before.

I couldn't stop life until I figured out what to do about my marriage.

After the girls finished eating, Ryan burped Ava while I changed Mia.

We worked around each other with the familiarity of two people who had done this hundreds of times.

He knew which drawer held the clean cloths.

I knew where he had put the extra diapers.

Neither of us had to explain how to prepare the changing table.

Our hands remembered what our hearts no longer knew how to do.

When the girls were settled in their bouncer seats, Ryan brought me a mug of tea.

He had made it the way I liked it.

I looked at the cup before taking it.

"Thank you," I said.

"You're welcome."

He sat across from me.

"I was thinking about what you said yesterday."

I waited.

"You said you couldn't be the only person trying to save our marriage."

"That's what I said."

"I don't expect you to do that."

I wrapped both hands around the mug.

"Then what do you expect?"

He took a breath.

"I want to show you that I can be different."

"Different how?"

"More honest. More present. Whatever you need me to be."

I looked at the tea.

The surface had gone still.

"I don't want you to become a person you think I want," I said. "I want you to stop hiding things from me."

"I can do that."

"You should have been doing it already."

His face tightened.

"You're right."

I had expected him to defend himself.

Part of me had even prepared an answer for the argument I thought would follow.

His agreement left me with nowhere to put my anger.

I didn't feel better.

I only felt tired.

"I need time," I said.

"I'll give you time."

"And I need you to understand that giving me time doesn't mean standing around waiting for me to forgive you."

He nodded.

"I understand."

I took a sip of tea.

It was already cooling.

"There's something else," I said.

He looked at me.

"I don't want to hear that this happened because you were lonely."

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

"I don't want to hear that being away was difficult or that you were confused or that you weren't thinking clearly."

"I wasn't going to say that."

"Maybe you weren't. But I need you to know that I can't accept it as an excuse."

He rested his hands on the table.

"I made those choices."

"Yes."

"And you didn't deserve any of it."

"No, I didn't."

The words came out more sharply than I intended.

Ryan didn't argue.

For the first time since the harbor, I felt that he was listening without trying to move the conversation toward a conclusion.

I didn't know whether that would last.

I only knew that I needed it to.

Later that morning, he offered to take the twins while I showered.

I hesitated.

The hesitation was small, but he noticed it.

"You can have an hour," he said. "I'll manage."

"I know you can manage."

He looked at me carefully.

"I wasn't trying to make you feel like you had to leave them with me."

I glanced toward the living room.

Mia was asleep.

Ava was staring at a toy hanging above her seat.

"I need to shower," I said. "That's all."

"Okay."

I went upstairs.

For the first time in months, I took a shower without listening for the sound of a crying baby through the bathroom door.

I stood beneath the warm water longer than I needed to.

I washed my hair twice.

I let the water run down my face.

And then, without warning, I began to cry.

It wasn't the kind of crying that came with a single clear thought.

It was the exhaustion of months spent waiting for Ryan to come home.

It was the memory of the blue jacket he had worn at the harbor.

It was the way Simone had looked at me when she said her name.

It was the shame of standing there with my daughters while another woman knew something about my husband that I didn't.

I pressed my palms against the tiled wall.

I didn't want to feel ashamed.

I hadn't done anything wrong.

But knowing that didn't make the feeling disappear.

When I finally turned off the water, I dried myself and looked at my reflection in the mirror.

My eyes were red.

My hair was tangled.

There were faint shadows beneath my eyes from months of broken sleep.

I looked like a woman who had been trying to carry too much for too long.

I put on clean clothes and went downstairs.

Ryan was sitting on the living-room rug with the twins.

He had placed a soft toy between them.

Ava was trying to grab it.

Mia was watching the ceiling fan.

Ryan looked up when he heard me.

"Everything okay?"

I nodded.

"Yeah."

He didn't ask why my eyes were red.

I was grateful for that.

I sat on the sofa and watched him play with the girls.

For a little while, the house felt peaceful.

Not healed.

Not safe in the way it had once felt.

But peaceful enough for me to take a breath.

I knew that one morning of kindness couldn't repair what had happened.

I also knew I didn't have to decide the rest of my life before lunch.

For now, I could sit on the sofa.

I could watch my daughters.

And I could let the morning pass without pretending that everything was fine.

*END PART 9**

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When I Found the Small Things Ryan Had Left Behind, I Realized How Much of Our Marriage I Was Now Trying to Reconsider

I woke before the twins the next morning.
