I made plans around that belief. I brought the girls to the harbor because I wanted you to know how much we missed you."

My voice faltered slightly.

I paused until I could continue.

"Then I watched you kiss someone else."

Ryan lowered his eyes.

"I know."

"No. You know you kissed her. You don't know what that did to me."

He remained silent.

I looked toward the hallway.

The girls were waking.

I could hear the faint rustling of blankets through the monitor.

"I don't know what I'm going to feel tomorrow," I continued. "I don't know what I'll feel next week. I might be angry when you think things are getting better. I might be quiet when you think I should be ready to talk."

Ryan nodded again.

"I won't rush you."

I wanted to believe that promise too.

But I had heard so many promises over the last two days that I was beginning to understand how little a promise could mean without action.

"Then don't."

I left him in the kitchen and went to the nursery.

Ava was awake, moving her legs beneath the blanket.

Mia had begun making impatient noises.

I lifted Ava first and carried her to the changing table.

She looked up at me with wide, curious eyes.

I smiled at her.

It felt strange to smile after everything that had happened.

But I did.

She was still my daughter.

Her world had not changed simply because mine had.

I changed her clothes and picked her up.

Then I took Mia from her crib.

Both girls needed feeding.

I settled into the chair by the window and held them one at a time, giving each the attention she needed.

The morning light fell across the floor.

A small pile of clean clothes waited on the dresser.

I had folded them the night before Ryan came home.

I remembered standing there, arranging tiny shirts and socks, imagining how the house would feel once he returned.

The memory no longer made me ashamed.

I had been happy.

I had been hopeful.

Those feelings had been real, even if the future I imagined had not unfolded the way I expected.

I didn't want Ryan's choices to take those memories away from me.

After feeding the girls, I placed them in their cribs for a short rest.

Then I returned to the living room.

Ryan was standing near the couch, looking at the photographs on the wall again.

He turned when he heard me.

"I want to do whatever it takes to make this right."

I stopped a few feet away.

"What does that mean to you?"

He took a breath.

"I'll stop seeing Simone. I'll be honest with you. I'll help more with the girls. I'll do whatever you need."

I listened carefully.

Some of what he said mattered.

I needed honesty.

I needed him to take responsibility for being a father, not simply appear when it suited him.

But I also noticed that he had listed things he could do without explaining how he would change the way he had treated our marriage.

I didn't want a list of chores in exchange for forgiveness.

I didn't want him to believe that washing bottles and changing diapers would cancel out the kiss.

The girls deserved his care whether or not I forgave him.

And I deserved honesty whether or not we stayed together.

"Taking care of the girls is not something you do to earn my forgiveness," I said.

He looked at me.

"They're your daughters. They need you."

He nodded slowly.

"I know."

"And being honest with me isn't a favor."

His expression tightened.

"I know that too."

I studied him.

I couldn't tell whether he truly understood or simply wanted the conversation to end.

I decided not to push him for another answer.

There would be time to see what he did.

For now, I wanted to know whether he was willing to stop hiding behind vague promises.

"Call Simone," I said.

Ryan looked at me.

"Now?"

"You said you would speak to her today."

He glanced toward the window.

I watched him struggle with the request.

Part of me wondered whether he had expected to postpone the conversation until he felt ready.

Perhaps he had planned to wait until I was calmer.

Perhaps he had hoped the urgency would fade once we were back in our familiar surroundings.

But I didn't want another day to pass with the relationship still unresolved.

I wasn't asking him to perform a conversation for me.

I was asking him to begin taking responsibility for the choices he had made.

Ryan reached into his pocket and took out his phone.

He looked at the screen for several seconds.

Then he walked toward the far end of the living room.

I stayed where I was.

I could have followed him.

I could have stood close enough to hear every word.

I could have watched his face while he spoke.

Instead, I remained beside the couch.

I didn't want to become someone who had to monitor her husband's conversations to feel safe.

I wanted to know that he would tell the truth even when no one was watching.

The phone rang.

I heard Ryan say Simone's name.

Then his voice became too quiet for me to make out the words.

I looked at the family photograph on the wall.

It showed Ryan and me before the girls were born.

We were standing close together, smiling at the camera.

I remembered the day it had been taken.

We had been tired after a long outing, and Ryan had joked that we looked as though we had forgotten how to stand still.

I had laughed.

He had pulled me closer.

The photographer had captured the moment.

For years, I had looked at that photograph and felt certain about the people in it.

Now I understood that a photograph could preserve a moment without telling you everything about the lives that came after it.

I couldn't use that picture to decide whether Ryan was still the man I had married.

I couldn't use the kiss to erase every good thing we had shared either.

I would have to look at what he did now.

His voice rose slightly.

I heard him say that he needed to be clear about something.

Then he fell quiet.

I didn't move.

The conversation continued for several minutes.

I couldn't hear every word, and I didn't try to.

Eventually, Ryan ended the call.

He stood with the phone in his hand for a moment before turning toward me.

I looked at his face.

"Is it over?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

I waited.

He slipped the phone into his pocket.

"I told her I couldn't continue the relationship."

I felt a mixture of relief and sadness.

The relief came first.

At least he had taken the step he had promised to take.

The sadness followed because the fact that he had ended the relationship did not make the relationship disappear.

It did not give me back the morning at the harbor.

It did not erase the weeks he had spent hiding it.

And it did not tell me whether I could ever trust him in the same way again.

"How did she respond?" I asked.

Ryan looked down briefly.

"She wasn't happy."

I nodded.

I had expected that.

He continued.

"She wanted to talk more, but I told her I needed to end things."

I watched him.

"Did you mean it?"

He looked at me directly.

"Yes."

I wanted to believe him.

This time, I didn't tell myself that his answer was enough.

I simply let it stand.

Trust would have to return through repeated choices, if it returned at all.

I couldn't decide that for him.

I couldn't decide it for myself yet either.

Ava began crying in the nursery.

I turned toward the hallway.

Ryan took a step forward.

"Let me get her."

I looked at him.

The offer was simple.

It was also the first time since his return that he had offered to take responsibility for something without asking me to reassure him afterward.

I nodded.

"She's in the nursery."

He walked down the hallway.

I heard the door open.

Then I heard his voice, soft and uncertain, greeting his daughter.

I stayed in the living room.

For a moment, I looked at the photograph on the wall again.

I didn't take it down.

I didn't turn it around.

I left it where it was.

The past belonged to us both, even if we remembered it differently.

What happened next would depend on the choices we made after the truth had come out.

For the first time since the harbor, I understood that I didn't have to decide the entire future that morning.

I only had to decide what I would no longer pretend not to see.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Morning After Ryan Ended Things With Simone, I Tried to Find Out Whether Our Home Could Feel Safe Again

Ryan didn't leave the kitchen immediately.
