About being away. About things going on in our lives."

I nodded slowly.

"And you couldn't talk to me about those things?"

He looked uncomfortable.

"Sometimes it felt easier."

The words hurt.

I had spent months waiting for him to call.

I had made room for his exhaustion, his schedule, and the difficulties of working at sea.

I had never expected him to tell me every thought that crossed his mind.

But I had wanted to be the person he turned toward when life became difficult.

Instead, he had found someone else.

"Why was it easier with her?"

He shook his head.

"I don't know."

I looked away.

Perhaps he genuinely didn't know.

Perhaps he was ashamed to say it.

Perhaps he was still trying to protect something about the relationship that he didn't want me to see.

I couldn't tell.

"What did you tell her about me?"

He looked up quickly.

"Nothing bad."

I studied his face.

"That's not what I asked."

He exhaled.

"I told her we had been struggling with the distance."

I felt a small ache in my chest.

We had struggled with the distance.

I had never denied that.

There had been difficult calls.

There had been evenings when I wanted more attention than he could give.

There had been times when I was so exhausted that I sounded impatient.

I wasn't proud of every moment.

But I had believed those struggles were ours to work through together.

I hadn't known that Ryan was discussing them with another woman while keeping me outside the conversation.

"Did you tell her about the girls?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

"What did you say?"

He looked toward the hallway.

"That I missed them."

I swallowed.

That answer sounded sincere.

I could imagine him saying it.

I could imagine him looking at the photographs I had sent and feeling the distance between himself and his daughters.

But the sincerity of that feeling didn't erase anything else.

"Did you tell her you wanted to come home?"

"Yes."

"Did you tell her you wanted to stay married to me?"

He went quiet.

I waited.

He looked down at his hands.

"I told her I was confused."

I felt the answer settle inside me.

He had been confused.

Perhaps he had been uncertain about our marriage.

Perhaps he had been uncertain about Simone.

Perhaps he had simply wanted to keep both possibilities open.

I didn't know.

But while he was confused, I had been preparing for his return.

I had been arranging the girls' clothes.

I had been packing the diaper bag.

I had been buying a jacket and planning a surprise.

I had been treating our future as something we still shared.

I looked at him across the table.

"Did you tell her you loved her?"

Ryan's face tightened.

"No."

I waited.

He added, "Not in those words."

I felt tired all at once.

There were so many ways to answer a question without answering it.

I could spend the entire morning asking for details, and he could spend the entire morning choosing which parts to reveal.

I needed something more than another conversation that left me with more questions.

"Are you still involved with her?"

Ryan looked directly at me.

"No."

The answer came quickly.

I wanted to believe it.

But I couldn't make myself do so simply because he had said it.

"Have you told her that?"

He shook his head.

"Not yet."

I leaned back in my chair.

"Then how do you know it's over?"

He didn't answer.

The kitchen fell silent.

I thought about the girls sleeping down the hall.

I thought about the future I wanted for them.

I thought about the promises Ryan and I had made before we knew how difficult life could become.

Then I looked at the man across from me.

"I can't be the only person trying to save this marriage,"
