5 – My Husband Finally Stood in Front of Me With No Easy Answer, and I Realized I Was Still Hoping He Would Make Me Wrong

Ryan looked at me for a long time.

I stood on the other side of the kitchen island, waiting for him to answer the question I had asked.

The refrigerator hummed behind me.

A glass of water sat near my hand.

Everything in the room was ordinary, except for the fact that I no longer trusted the man standing across from me.

"Did you cheat on me?"

I had asked it plainly.

There was no accusation hidden inside the words.

I wanted a yes or a no.

Ryan looked toward the hallway again.

Then he pulled out a chair and sat down.

I remained standing.

"Claire, I know this is difficult."

I almost closed my eyes.

He was doing it again.

He was talking about my feelings instead of answering my question.

"I didn't ask whether this was difficult."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I know what you asked."

"Then answer me."

For several seconds, he said nothing.

I could see him searching for words.

Perhaps he was trying to decide how much to tell me.

Perhaps he was trying to find a version of the truth that would hurt less.

I had no way of knowing.

Finally, he looked up.

"Yes."

One word.

Quietly spoken.

It was all it took to change the room.

I had suspected the answer.

I had watched him kiss Simone, and I had heard him admit that there was more to the story than I knew.

Still, hearing him say it made something inside me give way.

I gripped the edge of the counter.

Ryan stood up immediately.

"Claire."

I raised my hand.

"Please don't."

He stopped.

I looked down at the glass of water.

I had poured it because I thought I needed something to steady myself.

Now I couldn't bring myself to pick it up.

"How long?"

He swallowed.

"It wasn't supposed to happen."

I looked at him.

"That isn't what I asked."

He nodded slowly.

"I know."

"How long have you been involved with her?"

He stared at the floor.

I waited.

He finally said, "For a while."

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

I swallowed it before it escaped.

A while.

That was what he gave me after I had spent months believing we were simply waiting for him to come home.

"How long is a while, Ryan?"

He took a breath.

"Several weeks."

I stared at him.

Several weeks.

I thought about the calls I had waited for.

I thought about the photographs I had sent him.

I thought about the nights when I had carried a crying baby through the hallway while holding my phone, hoping he might call before I went to bed.

Several weeks.

During that time, I had been telling myself that our marriage was strong enough to survive the distance.

I had been telling the girls about their father.

I had been counting the days until he returned.

And he had been seeing Simone.

I sat down because my legs had begun to feel weak.

Ryan moved toward me, then stopped when he saw my expression.

"I know I have no excuse."

I looked at him.

"Then why are you still explaining?"

He lowered his head.

For a moment, I wanted to reach across the table and touch his hand.

That impulse embarrassed me.

Even then, I wanted to make the conversation easier for him.

I wanted to rescue him from the discomfort of admitting what he had done.

It was an old habit.

I had always believed that if I remained calm enough, patient enough, and understanding enough, we could find our way through anything.

But I couldn't make this better by being understanding.

He had made a choice.

I had to let that choice belong to him.

"Did you love her?"

Ryan looked up quickly.

"I don't know."

The answer hurt in a different way.

I had expected him to deny it.

I had expected him to tell me that Simone meant nothing, that he had made a terrible mistake, and that he wanted only his family.

Instead, he had admitted that he didn't know how he felt about her.

I stared at him.

"You don't know?"

He shook his head.

"It was complicated."

I pushed my chair back slightly.

"Please stop using that word."

He fell silent.

I could hear one of the girls stirring in the nursery.

For a second, both of us looked toward the hallway.

Then the house became quiet again.

I thought about how easily the morning could have gone differently.

I could have stayed home.

I could have waited for Ryan to arrive and come through the front door.

I could have welcomed him with the girls in my arms.

Perhaps he would have told me eventually.

Perhaps he would have continued keeping Simone separate from the life we shared.

I would never know.

What I did know was that I had discovered the truth by accident.

And I could no longer pretend that knowing the truth was the same as understanding it.

"Did you plan to tell me?"

Ryan's shoulders dropped.

"I was going to talk to you."

"When?"

He didn't answer.

I nodded slowly.

That silence was enough for me to understand that he had no clear answer.

Maybe he had intended to tell me someday.

Maybe he had intended to end things with Simone and return home as though nothing had happened.

Maybe he had planned to keep both parts of his life separate until one became impossible to hide.

I couldn't know which possibility was true.

I was tired of filling the gaps in his story with explanations that made him look better.

"Did she know about me?"

Ryan looked uncomfortable.

"She knew I was married."

I stared at him.

"Did she know you had children?"

He hesitated.

"Yes."

I looked away.

That answer hurt more than I expected.

I had imagined that perhaps Simone had believed Ryan was single.

I had imagined that maybe the kiss had happened because she misunderstood his situation.

It was a small, desperate hope.

Now even that was gone.

She knew about me.

She knew about our daughters.

And she had kissed him anyway.

Ryan leaned forward.

"I should have stopped it before it got this far."

I looked back at him.

"Why didn't you?"

He rubbed his hands together.

"I don't have a good answer."

For the first time, I believed him.

Not because I thought he was telling me everything.

Because I could see that he had spent so much time avoiding the truth that he no longer knew how to explain himself.

That didn't make me feel better.

It only made the situation feel more real.

I stood and carried my glass to the sink.

The water inside was still untouched.

I poured it away and placed the glass on the rack.

Then I washed my hands, although they weren't dirty.

I needed something simple to do.

Something that had a beginning and an end.

When I turned around, Ryan was still sitting at the table.

"Are you going to leave me?" he asked.

I stopped.

It was the first question he had asked that morning that seemed to be about something other than controlling the conversation.

I looked at him.

"I don't know."

His face changed.

I could see that he had expected a different answer.

Perhaps he thought I would promise to stay.

Perhaps he believed that because we had children, I would find a way to forgive him.

I had no idea what he expected.

I only knew that I couldn't promise him anything.

I had spent the morning discovering that the future I imagined might never have existed in the way I believed.

I wasn't ready to decide what came next.

"I need time," I said.

He nodded.

For once, he didn't argue with the request.

I walked past him toward the nursery.

The girls were awake.

Ava was making soft noises in her crib, while Mia had begun to fuss.

I lifted Mia first.

She settled against my shoulder almost immediately.

I held her close and looked down at her small face.

She trusted me completely.

That trust frightened me.

I wanted to be the kind of mother who could give her daughters a safe, loving home.

I wanted them to grow up believing that love was honest.

I wanted them to know that they could depend on the people closest to them.

But I couldn't make those things happen simply by wanting them.

I would have to decide what I was willing to accept.

And I would have to stop confusing keeping a family together with keeping a secret.

Ryan appeared in the doorway.

He stood there quietly, watching us.

I didn't tell him to leave.

I didn't invite him closer.

For the moment, I simply held our daughter and tried to understand how a morning that began with hope had ended with a truth I couldn't put back.

<a
